Abstract

This article discusses the efforts to deconstruct the negative image of the Muslim community in Europe through a humanist moral approach developed by a contemporary Muslim intellectual, Tariq Ramadan. In the context of increasing Islamophobia and stereotypes against Muslims after global events such as the September 11 attacks (9/11) and terrorist attacks in Europe, Ramadan offers a new paradigm that emphasizes the importance of integration without losing Islamic identity. The moral approach he initiated is based on universal Islamic values such as justice, compassion, social responsibility, and openness to intercultural dialogue. Through this framework, the article examines how Ramadan encourages Muslims to appear as active and constructive citizens in a pluralist European society. In addition, Ramadan's criticism of both religious fundamentalism and radical secularism is also discussed, which often closes off space for healthy religious expression. Thus, this article shows how Islamic humanist ethics can be a bridge to build a more harmonious relationship between Muslims and European society at large.

Abstract

Q.S ad-Dhuha [93] is a surah that was revealed to address the Prophet's anxiety because he had not received any revelations from Allah for a long time. Among the eleven verses in Q.S ad-Dhuha, there is one verse that presents a controversial interpretation. The verse describes the Prophet's condition when he was once in a state of misguidance. The confusion surrounding the interpretation of Q.S ad-Dhuha [93]:7 is interesting to explore further in order to obtain the message and meaning contained in the verse. In this paper, the author attempts to explore the meaning using Paul Ricoeur's heuristic method to uncover the symbols contained in the text. The research method used in this paper is a qualitative method with a library-research data collection technique. Through this study, it can be understood that Q.S ad-Dhuha [93]:7 illustrates the evolutionary process of every human being in searching for the path of truth. In the process of searching for these values of truth, humans should not feel satisfied or, conversely, feel hopeless, because Allah is always present to help His servants.

Abstract

This study examines the phenomenon of using hadith in the marketing of Ajwa Drinking Water as a form of religious commodification in the digital era. The research focuses on the use of the hadith, “The best of people are those who are most beneficial to others,” in the promotion of Ajwa drinking water products marketed through social media. This study employs a qualitative method with a hadith analysis approach and the study of contemporary religious movements. The data were obtained from product promotional posts, hadith literature, and studies on the commodification of religion and shifts in religious authority. The findings reveal that the hadith, which originally functioned as a guideline for social ethics, undergoes a transformation of meaning when used as a branding element for commercial products. The use of hadith in marketing creates a symbolic association between product consumption and expressions of piety, thereby reducing religion into an instrument of commercial value. Furthermore, this study finds a shift in authority from religious scholars to market authority, where commercial brands assume the role of conveying and interpreting religious messages. This study emphasizes the importance of caution in the use of hadith texts in public spaces so that religious values are not instrumentally exploited for economic interests.

Abstract

This article examines Asma Afsaruddin’s critique of the instrumentalization of hadith as a theological device for legitimizing political authoritarianism in Islamic history. Throughout the medieval and modern periods, despotic rulers have appropriated traditions enjoining absolute obedience to the ruler most conspicuously the tradition of Hudhayfah ibn al-Yaman recorded in Sahih Muslim to silence dissent and sacralize tyranny. Employing a qualitative library-research design with a diachronic-hermeneutical approach, this study analyzes Afsaruddin’s principal works and confronts them with the classical corpus of obedience traditions and their medieval commentaries. The findings demonstrate that Afsaruddin reconstructs a semantic genealogy in which the concepts of taʼah (obedience) and jamaʼah (community) were transformed from conditional, contractual, and ethically bounded notions in the formative period into instruments of unconditional submission engineered by dynastic court scholarship. Afsaruddin retrieves the suppressed counter-memory of the early community like grounded in election, consultation (shura), moral excellence (fadilah), and the duty of commanding right as evidence that rejecting an unjust ruler is consonant with, rather than contrary to, normative Islam. The article concludes that her historical hermeneutics furnishes an accountable, inclusive, and anti-authoritarian political theology for contemporary Muslim societies.

Abstract

Scientific Interpretation is a Qur’anic interpretive approach that employs scientific knowledge to explain verses related to natural phenomena (ayat-ayat kauniyah). Its emergence has generated considerable debate among Muslim scholars. Some regard it as a manifestation of the Qur’an’s scientific miraculousness (i‘jaz ‘ilmi), demonstrating the harmony between revelation and scientific advancement, while others consider it a form of extraneous interpretation (Dakhil fi al-tafsir) that imposes modern scientific theories upon the Qur’anic text. This article aims to examine the position of scientific Interpretation within the Islamic Interpretation tradition by analyzing the arguments of both its proponents and critics. The study employs a qualitative library research method through a critical review of classical and contemporary scholarly works. The findings indicate that supporters of scientific Interpretation view it as a means of demonstrating the miraculous nature of the Qur’an, reconciling religion and science, and strengthening faith. In contrast, its critics argue that it may lead to interpretations that depart from the apparent meaning of the text, neglect contextual considerations, and tie Qur’anic meanings to scientific theories that are inherently tentative and subject to change. This study concludes that scientific Interpretation can be accepted when applied proportionally, without forcing scientific meanings onto the text, while remaining consistent with established principles of Arabic linguistics and Qur’anic interpretation, and relying only on well-established scientific facts. Under these conditions, scientific Interpretation may enrich the understanding of Qur’anic cosmological verses without undermining the primary function of the Qur’an as divine guidance.

Abstract

Interpersonal communication is an essential aspect of human life and is inherently accompanied by the potential for conflict arising from differences in interests, perceptions, and perspectives. Conflict is not always detrimental; when managed constructively, it can serve as a means of strengthening interpersonal relationships. Although numerous studies have examined conflict management and its resolution from an Islamic perspective, research integrating interpersonal communication with Islamic values remains limited. This study aims to examine the concept of conflict management in interpersonal communication from an Islamic perspective, highlighting the positive outcomes of conflict and the strategies for its resolution. The study employed a library research method by reviewing relevant books, scholarly journals, and other academic literature. The findings reveal that Islam emphasizes conflict resolution through the principles of islah (reconciliation), musyawarah (consultation), tabayyun (verification), justice, patience, and forgiveness. Properly managed conflict can enhance communication quality, strengthen interpersonal relationships, foster trust, and promote personal development. The novelty of this study lies in integrating Islamic conflict resolution principles with interpersonal communication, thereby positioning conflict not merely as a problem to be resolved but as an opportunity to build more harmonious, productive, and sustainable relationships through open communication, empathy, and respect for differences.
