Abstract

This paper explores how Islamic movements adapt to the dynamics of state policies, market systems, and increasingly complex social changes in the modern context. The study examines the transformation of Islamic movements through the lens of governance and governmentality theories, focusing on how Islamic actors utilize digitalization to strengthen their positions in political, economic, and social arenas. The methodology employed is a qualitative approach using secondary data analysis from relevant literature, case studies of Islamic movements in various countries, and digital discourse analysis. This study finds that digitalization is not only a means to disseminate religious ideologies but also a tool for creating new markets based on Islamic values, such as halal e-commerce and sharia fintech. Moreover, Islamic movements leverage digitalization to advocate for policies that are more responsive to the needs of their communities. The use of digital media allows Islamic movements to build cross-border networks, foster global collaborations, and create new spaces for more inclusive activism. On the other hand, this adaptation also presents new challenges, such as the potential manipulation of information, strict state surveillance, and societal polarization due to the use of digital technology. Furthermore, this phenomenon highlights the importance of digital literacy for Muslim communities to optimize the use of technology without losing the Islamic values that form the foundation of their identity. The findings contribute to understanding the relationship between Islamic movements, state policies, and markets in the digitalization era.

Abstract

Generation Z faces significant moral and social challenges in the digital and globalized era, often leading to shifts in values and behavior. In the context of West Sumatra, character education needs to be aligned with local wisdom, particularly the philosophy of Adat Basandi Syarak, Syarak Basandi Kitabullah (ABS-SBK), which integrates Minangkabau cultural values with Islamic teachings. This study aims to analyze the strategies for implementing character education at MTsN 3 Limapuluh Kota and its relevance to the ABS-SBK principles. Using a qualitative descriptive method, data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation. The results indicate that character education at the school is implemented through role modeling, curriculum integration, extracurricular activities, school culture, reward and punishment systems, and educational discipline. The character values developed among Generation Z students include honesty, discipline, responsibility, cooperation, empathy, politeness, and diligence. These values reflect moral integrity and social responsibility that align with both Islamic norms and local culture. The relevance of character education to the ABS-SBK philosophy is evident in the integration of Islamic values with local traditions, such as the principles of Syarak Mangato Adat Mamakai and Kesudahan Adat Ka Balai Urang. This integration fosters balanced moral character—religious, culturally aware, and socially responsible—while preparing students to face the challenges of the digital era.

Abstract

This study examines how digital platform algorithms fundamentally reshape Islamic communication strategies and the structure of religious authority in contemporary Indonesia. Through a qualitative approach that combines framing analysis and virtual ethnography, the study investigated six prominent ustadz content creators on YouTube and Instagram to understand their adaptive strategies in navigating algorithmic demands. The study reveals three critical findings: first, algorithms prioritize engagement-driven content over scientific credentials, creating a new form of algorithmic religious authority in which popularity replaces traditional Islamic scholarship; second, religious leaders deliberately adjust their da'wah strategies by using short-form videos, clickbait titles, and virality-oriented content to meet the platform's logic; third, a significant tension arises between maintaining authentic Islamic teachings and meeting algorithmic requirements for visibility. A comparative analysis of viral and non-viral Islamic content shows that algorithm-favored content often simplifies complex religious discourse, potentially compromising theological depth. This research introduces the concept of algorithmic religious authority and provides critical insights into the platformization of religion. These findings recommend that Islamic educational institutions develop a digital literacy framework to balance algorithmic adaptation with scientific integrity, ensuring quality religious understanding among Muslim communities in the digital age while maintaining the authenticity of Islamic teachings.

Abstract

The expansion of digital media has reshaped the circulation and reception of Islamic knowledge, particularly hadith, within contemporary Muslim societies. This study analyzes how hadith is accessed, interpreted, and embodied on Indonesian YouTube, focusing on processes of moral internalization, the negotiation of religious authority, and the formation of performative spiritual identities. Using digital ethnography, 150 hadith-centered videos were examined and supplemented by semi-structured interviews with 15 active viewers. The findings demonstrate that the condensation of hadith into emotionally resonant moral lessons enhances accessibility, while religious authority becomes a dynamic, co-constructed field involving preachers, content producers, and audiences. User interactions—commenting, sharing, and reflective narration—function as modes of performative spirituality that extend beyond the screen and foster emerging forms of communal ethical life. While the medium risks decontextualization and superficial interpretation, it also provides opportunities for participatory learning, spiritual cultivation, and adaptive meaning-making in a rapidly changing media ecology. This study contributes to digital religion scholarship by illuminating how symbolic authority and religious identity are reconfigured through everyday digital practices in the Indonesian Muslim context.

Abstract

The intersection of Indonesian culture, Islamic scholarship, and digital technology has given rise to a new paradigm in Qur’anic interpretation, here conceptualized as Cyber-Tafsir Nusantara. This study explores how Indonesia’s rich traditions of tafsir-historically shaped by pesantren (Islamic boarding schools), local wisdom (kearifan lokal), and communal religious practices-are being reimagined in the digital era. Through qualitative analysis of digital learning platforms, online study circles (halaqah daring), and social media-based tafsir communities, this article identifies the emergence of the Digital Santri: a new generation of Indonesian Qur’anic learners who integrate traditional interpretative frameworks with technological fluency. The Digital Santri not only embodies the continuity of tafsir nusantara values-such as contextual interpretation, communal ethics, and cultural rootedness-but also expands them within the dynamics of online interaction, algorithmic mediation, and global connectivity. The findings highlight how digitalization does not erase tradition but transforms it into new cultural expressions of religiosity and intellectual engagement. By framing this transformation within Indonesia’s unique cultural and theological landscape, this research contributes to contemporary debates on digital religion, local epistemology, and the indigenization of Islamic scholarship in the digital age.

Abstract

This paper critically examines Tafsil.id as a digital platform for scientific Qur’anic exegesis (tafsīr ʿilmī) and evaluates its potential to foster ecological enlightenment in the digital era. While Tafsil.id effectively links Qur’anic verses with modern scientific discoveries, demonstrating the harmony between revelation and rational inquiry, its interpretive scope remains largely confined to descriptive scientific explanation rather than ethical or environmental engagement. Through qualitative textual and content analysis of selected themes related to natural phenomena, the study finds that Tafsil.id operates within a concordist epistemology that prioritizes scientific correspondence, supported by a digital presentation emphasizing accessibility and academic transparency. Beneath this framework, however, lies a latent capacity for eco-theological transformation grounded in Qur’anic principles of khilāfah fī al-arḍ and mīzān. By integrating insights from Qur’anic eco-theology and digital daʿwah, the study argues that tafsīr ʿilmī can evolve from a mode of scientific explanation into a form of eco-spiritual daʿwah, positioning digital exegesis platforms like Tafsil.id as emerging agents of environmental awareness and moral responsibility in the contemporary Muslim world.

Abstract

The rapid advancement of digital technology has transformed community interaction, resource access, and development strategies in the digital era. This study systematically synthesizes the contemporary landscape of community empowerment, focusing on the integration of digital literacy, cross-sector collaboration, and inclusive governance. Adopting a narrative literature review methodology, this study analyzed nine recent empirical and conceptual articles drawn from major academic databases. The synthesis reveals five key dimensions of empowerment in the digital era: spiritual and social resilience, ecological and collaborative capacity, digital and inclusive participation, psychological and adaptive traits, and cognitive and institutional learning. Despite extensive empirical progress, significant theoretical gaps remain—particularly in the integration of spiritual, social, digital, and institutional perspectives and in adaptation to rapid digital transformation. The findings advocate for a multidimensional empowerment framework that incorporates moral values, digital skills, collaboration, and knowledge management to foster resilient and sustainable communities. This study enhances both theoretical and practical understanding, demonstrating that effective empowerment is an ongoing and holistic process vital for achieving inclusive and sustainable development in the digital age.

Abstract

Nigeria’s population in 2025 is estimated to be approximately 237.5 million, according to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA, 2025), making her the most populous country in Africa. The country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is projected at $2.573 trillion, maintaining its position as the continent’s largest economy. When the country gained independence in 1960, it has a sharing hope of achieving a qualitative economy development and even structural transformation. Sooner than later, it started experiencing period of boom and bust. Unfortunately, the economy was later brought down to her knees, struggling from all ends to come up again. The challenges that affected Nigeria economy are not far-fetched, they stem from religio-political conflicts which were manifested through the Boko-Haram and ISWAP insurgency in the north-east, banditry and kidnappings in the north-west and the farmer-header clashes in the middle belt of Nigeria. The Nigeria economy is intricately linked with the country’s politics and religion which have significantly influenced its development trajectory. The Country has a north/south dichotomy and the religion rivalry between the two dominant religions, thereby resulting into shaping the political dynamics of the country negatively at the expense of economic productivity and citizen welfare. This paper explores the complex dynamics between politics, religion and the economy in Nigeria, how these factors intersect to shape the country’s growth and development. This work aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the complex relationship between religion and politics viz-a-viz the socio-economic growth of the country.
