Abstract

Suboptimal breast milk production during the postpartum period is one of the causes of low rates of exclusive breastfeeding. Various nonpharmacological interventions have been developed to increase breast milk production, one of which involves a combination of oxytocin massage and breast care. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of a combination of oxytocin massage and breast care in increasing breast milk production among postpartum mothers at the Konaro Community Health Center. The study employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design using a one-group pretest–posttest design. The study sample consisted of 25 postpartum mothers selected using total sampling. Breast milk production was measured based on breast milk volume before and after the intervention. Data analysis included the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and a paired t-test with a 95% significance level. The results showed that the average breast milk production volume increased from 34.00 ± 11.71 mL before the intervention to 106.52 ± 34.13 mL after the intervention, with an average increase of 72.52 mL. The results of the paired t-test showed a statistically significant increase in breast milk production following the combination of oxytocin massage and breast care (p=0.000). The combination of these two interventions is effective in increasing breast milk production and has the potential to become a safe, easy-to-implement, and nonpharmacological intervention that can be integrated into midwifery care to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding among postpartum mothers.

Abstract

Morning sickness is a common complaint experienced by pregnant women in the first trimester due to hormonal changes during pregnancy. Although generally physiological in nature, this condition can interfere with nutritional intake, daily activities, and quality of life if not properly managed. One complementary therapy considered safe and easy to implement is the administration of ginger drinks. This study aimed to analyze the effect of ginger drink administration on reducing morning sickness in first-trimester pregnant women at the Mopuya Community Health Center. The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest design. The study sample consisted of 21 first-trimester pregnant women selected using total sampling. The severity of morning sickness was measured using the Pregnancy-Unique Quantification of Emesis and Nausea (PUQE) instrument before and after the intervention. Data analysis was performed using univariate and bivariate methods, specifically the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test, with a 95% confidence level. The results showed that the mean PUQE score decreased from 8.00 ± 1.18 before the intervention to 3.38 ± 1.32 after the intervention. The Wilcoxon test results indicated that the administration of ginger drink had a significant effect on reducing morning sickness (p = 0.000). Thus, ginger drinks can serve as an effective, safe, and easily implemented nonpharmacological complementary therapy in antenatal care to help reduce nausea and vomiting in first-trimester pregnant women and improve their comfort during pregnancy.

Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy remains a health issue that increases the risk of complications for both the mother and the fetus. In addition to iron supplement tablets, the consumption of local iron-rich foods, such as red spinach (Amaranthus tricolor), has the potential to serve as a complementary intervention to increase hemoglobin (Hb) levels. This study aimed to analyze the effect of red amaranth consumption on Hb levels in pregnant women with anemia at Budi Satia Langowan General Hospital. The study employed a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 30 pregnant women with anemia selected using total sampling. Hb levels were measured before and after the intervention, which consisted of consuming 100 grams of red spinach daily for one week. Data were analyzed univariately and bivariately using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank test. The results showed an increase in the mean Hb level from 10.23 g/dL before the intervention to 11.38 g/dL after the intervention. Statistical analysis indicated a significant effect of red spinach consumption on the increase in Hb levels in pregnant women with anemia (p=0.000). These findings suggest that red spinach has the potential to serve as an effective, locally sourced dietary intervention to complement iron supplement tablets. The use of red spinach may be considered in nutrition education during antenatal care to support the prevention and management of anemia during pregnancy.

Abstract

Background: The rise in operative obstetric interventions during delivery is frequently triggered by prolonged labor or uterine dystocia caused by inadequate maternal physical endurance. Although structured prenatal exercise conditions the birth canal, empirical evidence regarding the dose-response relationship of cumulative sessions in primary care settings remains limited.  Objective: To analyze the influence of cumulative prenatal exercise frequency on achieving normal vaginal delivery among delivering mothers at the Ibunda Maternity Clinic.  Methodology: This analytical cross-sectional study involved 40 delivering mothers (N = 40) from May to June 2026, recruited via consecutive sampling. Inclusion criteria comprised single live fetuses under ideal baseline obstetric conditions (92.5% vertex presentation, normal birth weight) to minimize confounding factors. Since the exercise frequency data were non-normally distributed according to the Shapiro-Wilk test (p = 0.000), bivariate analysis utilized the non-parametric Mann-Whitney U test (alpha = 0.05) to compare the normal vaginal delivery group (n = 33) and the assisted/SC group (n = 7).  Results and Discussion: Respondents attended prenatal exercise within a range of 2–24 sessions, with a mean of 11.70 \pm 6.82 sessions. The Mann-Whitney U test revealed a statistically significant difference in exercise frequency between the two delivery outcome groups (U = 20.000; Z = -3.439; p = 0.001). The normal delivery group exhibited a significantly higher Mean Rank (23.39) compared to the assisted/SC group (6.86). Physiologically and psychologically, a higher frequency of physical training enhances pelvic joint flexibility and suppresses stress hormones, thereby mitigating maternal exhaustion during the second stage of labor.  Conclusion: There is a statistically significant difference in prenatal exercise frequency based on delivery outcomes. Regular and repetitive participation in prenatal exercise significantly improves the likelihood of achieving a normal spontaneous vaginal delivery.

Abstract

Suboptimal breast milk production remains one of the obstacles to successful exclusive breastfeeding. Various efforts have been made to increase breast milk production, one of which is through the use of papaya as a readily available and nutrient-rich natural galactagogue. This study aimed to analyze the effectiveness of papaya consumption on increasing breast milk production among breastfeeding mothers at the Maelang Community Health Center. The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest–posttest approach. The sample consisted of 30 breastfeeding mothers selected using total sampling. Breast milk production was assessed based on breast milk volume, breastfeeding frequency, breastfeeding duration, and the infant’s urination frequency before and after papaya consumption over a seven-day period. Data analysis was performed using the Wilcoxon test with a significance level of p < 0.05. The results showed that the average breast milk volume increased from 163.00 mL to 310.00 mL after the intervention, accompanied by an increase in breastfeeding frequency and duration as well as the frequency of the infants’ urination. The Wilcoxon test indicated a significant effect of papaya administration on increased breast milk production (p=0.000). It was concluded that papaya is effective as a complementary therapy based on local food to increase breast milk production in breastfeeding mothers. The use of papaya can be considered as part of midwifery education and services to support the success of exclusive breastfeeding programs.

Abstract

Anemia during pregnancy remains a problem associated with maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. In addition to iron supplementation, nutrient-rich foods may provide complementary nutritional support. Sweet potato and tuna croquettes contain protein, heme iron, vitamin B12, β-carotene, and vitamin C, which contribute to hemoglobin synthesis. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of sweet potato and tuna croquettes in increasing hemoglobin levels among pregnant women with anemia in the working area of Belang Primary Health Center. This pre-experimental study used a one-group pretest–posttest design. Conducted from March to May 2026, it involved 20 pregnant women with anemia selected through total sampling. Hemoglobin levels were measured before and after intervention. Data were analyzed using Paired Sample t-test with SPSS at a 95% confidence level. Mean hemoglobin increased from 10.38 ± 0.75 g/dL before the intervention to 11.49 ± 0.88 g/dL afterward. The increase was statistically significant (p < 0.001). Sweet potato and tuna croquettes were effective in increasing hemoglobin levels and may serve as a complementary strategy for anemia management in pregnancy through antenatal care services.

Abstract

Anaemia in pregnancy is a significant public health issue that increases the risk of maternal and newborn complications. In addition to iron supplementation, indigenous foods rich in protein, iron, and essential micronutrients may serve as an adjunctive approach to improve haemoglobin levels. Goroho banana (Musa acuminata) and skipjack tuna (Katsuwonus pelamis) are local foods from North Sulawesi with nutritional properties that support haemoglobin formation. This study aimed to examine the effect of a local dietary intervention using goroho banana and skipjack tuna on haemoglobin levels among pregnant women at Danowudu Primary Health Center. A pre-experimental one-group pretest–posttest design was used. Thirty-two pregnant women were selected through purposive sampling. The study was conducted from March to May 2026. Haemoglobin levels were measured before and after the intervention and analyzed using a Paired Sample t-test with SPSS at a 95% confidence level. Mean haemoglobin increased from 10.13 ± 0.71 g/dL to 11.74 ± 0.75 g/dL, with a mean increase of 1.61 g/dL. The Paired Sample t-test showed a significant improvement (p < 0.001). The intervention significantly improved haemoglobin levels and may support anaemia prevention through local food-based nutritional counselling during antenatal care.

Abstract

Cervical cancer remains a major health burden among women, particularly in developing countries. Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) is an economical, simple, and feasible early screening method for primary healthcare facilities. However, screening participation among women of reproductive age remains low, partly due to limited knowledge about cervical cancer and the importance of early detection. This study aimed to examine the relationship between knowledge and VIA screening uptake among women of reproductive age. A quantitative analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at Morodadi Primary Health Center, Morotai Island Regency, from February to April 2026. Sixty women of reproductive age were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated and reliable structured questionnaire and analyzed using univariate statistics and the Chi-square test at α = 0.05. High knowledge was found in 40.0% of respondents, moderate knowledge in 35.0%, and low knowledge in 25.0%. Overall, 60.0% had undergone VIA screening, while 40.0% had not. Chi-square analysis showed a significant relationship between knowledge and VIA screening uptake (p = 0.002). Higher knowledge was significantly associated with VIA screening uptake. Health promotion and reproductive health education should be strengthened to increase screening participation.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (CED) among pregnant women remains a public health concern because it increases the risk of adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. The Indonesian government implemented the Supplementary Feeding Program (PMT) to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable pregnant women. This study evaluated the effectiveness of PMT in improving nutritional indicators among pregnant women with CED in the Sangowo Primary Health Care coverage area. A pre-experimental single-group pretest–posttest design was used involving 60 pregnant women with CED selected through total sampling. Mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) and body weight were measured before and after 90 days of nutritional supplementation. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and a paired t-test at α = 0.05. Mean MUAC increased from 22.34 ± 0.74 cm to 23.68 ± 0.81 cm, while mean body weight increased from 49.82 ± 5.28 kg to 52.11 ± 5.36 kg. The paired t-test showed a statistically significant improvement in nutritional indicators (p < 0.001). PMT significantly improved nutritional indicators among pregnant women with CED. Continued implementation should include nutrition education, adherence monitoring, and clinical management.

Abstract

Chronic Energy Deficiency (KEK) in pregnant women is still a significant nutritional problem and is related to the incidence of Low Birth Weight Infants (BBLR). Inadequate intake of energy and nutrients during pregnancy can inhibit fetal growth and increase the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes. This study aims to determine the relationship between KEK in pregnant women and the incidence of BBLR at the Sabatai Health Center. The study used an observational analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. A total of 60 respondents were included through the total sampling technique. Secondary data were obtained from maternal medical records, antenatal care registers, and childbirth records. SEZs were identified based on Upper Arm Circumference (LILA) < 23.5 cm, while BBLR was set in infants with a birth weight of < 2,500 grams. Data analysis was carried out using descriptive statistics and the Chi-Square test with a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that 22 respondents (36.7%) experienced KEK and 18 babies (30.0%) were born with BBLR. Of the mothers with KEK, 63.6% gave birth to BBLR babies, while only 10.5% of mothers without KEK gave birth to BBLR babies. Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between pregnant women's KEK and the incidence of BBLR (p = 0.000). These findings confirm the importance of early nutrition screening, nutrition education, nutritional status monitoring, and optimization of antenatal services to reduce the incidence of BBLR.
