Abstract

The spirit of togetherness and cooperation seems to be declining among some of Indonesian communities. The Independence Day celebration can be used as a momentum to strengthen the spirit through various competitions for children. Traditional games which are commonly played for competitions can potentially be developed into educational games. The Gotong Royong Run presented here has been developed and modified from a traditional game called Lari Me-mindahkan Bendera (Flag-moving Race). The game is intended for pre-school and elementary school children to train skills of working cooperatively.

Abstract

Although there are many aspects responsible for the quality of education, teachers are usually considered as the most responsible ones for the low students' achievement. To help the teachers perform professionally, an empowerment program for teachers should be conducted. Based on the analysis on some aspects related to teachers, an empowerment program consisting of two components is developed. The first component, competency empowerment, proposes six ideas, i.e. improve the student recruitment system, improve teachers' reading ability and reading interest, presenting models, focus the training program on teachers' needs, encourage teachers to conduct classroom action research, and develop habit of scientific discussion. The second component, teachers' welfare empowerment, proposes reasonable incentive for teachers

The General Directorate of Higher Education had published the Guidelines of Instructional Program for Religious Education (GBPP Pendidikan Agama) 1999. Some aspects of the Guidelines need to be thought of and considered by the lecturers of Religious Education. The lecturers have to enrich their instructional programs with religious experiences offered to the students as an extracurricular activity. A contextual approach should be implemented to help the students solve their actual problems. The lecturers of subject matter with sufficient capabilities can be recruited to teach the Religious Education. Achievement evaluation should be designed to include the cognitive, afective and psychomotoric domains. The existing organization of religious lecturers can function as a forum for sharing information to solve instructional problems and to improve the lecturers' performance.

Abstract

One of the philosophical questions which should be pricipally answered in curriculum development for any subject is why a particular subject needs to be taught to children in school. The answer to such a question is basically influenced by ideology or beliefs and values system believed in society. Reconstructionism is regarded as an appropriate educational ideology which gives the basis for the Geography curriculum development in society characterised with democratic values such as that of Idonesia. The discussion on this issue leads to suggestion that Indonesian primary school educators need to reconsider the deferment on Geography teaching until Grade Three in prinary school and to regard Geography as an important and strategic subject matter to be taught to the primary pupils as early as posible.

The change of the teaching learning process should start from that of the indoctrinative authoritative attitude of a PPKn teacher to familiar-democratic one, followed by the change of materials teaching learning strategy, teaching aids, and evaluation. Furthermore, in the teaching learning process, the student should be motivated to change his passive attitudes to active and responsive ones, to enjoy reading, and to get more information from his environment to be discussed in the class
