Abstract

Twenty-first century which is just around the corner, will bring a lot of changes in several fields, including education. To find out what kind of changes should be done, it is necessary for us to retrace the history of education in Indonesia starting from the Dutch Colonial time to the present day. As a result we might be able to detect the problems in our educational sistem from pre-school to university level. Besides, this article is going to focus on what kind of educational system and human resources are needed in the next century. Based on that knowledge, some alternatives are given to solve the problems in our educational system to "produce" excellent human resources for the future.

Abstract

This experimental study was intended to test the influence of two methods applied in teaching History, Creative Problem Solving (CPS), Historiographical Process (HP), and Lecturing Method (LM). The subjects were students of State Senior High Schools (SMUN) in Surakarta Municipality assigned randomly into experimental groups and control groups. At the beginning of the treatment, the subjects were tested on their aptitudes, using two batteries of the Differential Aptitude Test (DAT), to measure Verbal and Abstract Abilities. Their learning outcomes were tested by using an achievement test. The results showed that there was a different influence of the three methods applied in teaching History and that the Creative Problem Solving method was more effective than the others. It was suggested that an aptitude test could be implemented to predict students' learning outcomes.

Abstract

This article attempts to demonstrate the complexity of spoken language. First of all, the general characteristics of both varieties of language are dissussed, followed by an analysis of the differences between the spoken and written language. As spoken language is usually associated with non-standard language, the notion of standard and non-standard English will also be dissussed. The spoken and written language dissussed here refers to English only. In addition, spoken data were taken from spontaneous speech (conversation), whereas the written language data were taken from formal written works. Finally, it is their own way; thus one will never be easier or simpler than the other.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop and validate an instrument of classroom climate based on the instrument developed in Australia. The instrument consisted of two forms, the actual and preferred forms, to measure aspects of the actual and preferred classroom climate. The study involved 1126 grade V and VI elementary school students in Padang, West Sumatera. Data were analysed by applying factor analysis, Cronbach Alpha and discriminant validity. The result of the study demontrsted that the empirical evidence supported the items grouped into scales. The internal consistency of the instrument was higher than the previous version. Each item of the instrument does not overlap with the others. So, the instrument can be implemented to measur classroom climate. It is suggested to validate the instrument for junior high school students.
