Abstract

An educational postulate states that the longer compulsary education in the national education system the higher the quality and progress of the nation, and finally the higher the quality of the human resources. The postulate is specifically fulfilled by three concepts and five characteristics of basic education. The three concepts include literacy education, citizenship, and basic education for all people. The five characteristics are related to universal inclusiveness, cost, compulsoriness for certain age, development of democratic values, and provision by governmental instutions. There are some problems concerning the development of the compulsary education, such as interconnection and stratification, transfer system and exams, budget, teachers's quality and their availability

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to find out the correlation between self-confidence and self-esteem both individually and collectivelly and the interpersonal relationship ability. The subjects were 100 students of educational faculty of IKIP Ujung Pandang. The data were obtained by applying a set of scales for revealing interpersonal relationship, self-confidence, and self-esteem. The data were subjected to regression and analysis of variance. Based on the data analysis, it was concluded that the ability in interpersonal relationship was influenced by the students` self-confidence and students' self-esteem. Furthermore, self-confidence had a greater influence than self-esteem on ability in interpersonal relationship

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to explore problems faced by primary school principals in implementing pupil management. The sample consisted of 60 primary school principals from regions developed by the Primary Education Quality Improvement Project (PEQIP) participating in a management training held in IKIP Malang, 1997. Data were gathered by questionnaire and then verified by a group of peer reviewers. The results showed that problems faced by primary school principals in pupil management were school census, pupil recruitment, pupil orientation, pupil placement, pupil grouping, pupil discipline, guidance and counseling services, pupil evaluation, pupil mutation and school-leaving, and extra-curricular activities.

Abstract

This article discusses a part of findings of a study performed by Kumaidi and associates. The issue discussed in this article mainly focused on the aplication of Rasch model in analyzing data across classrooms and demonstrated the worth of the analysis. Data used in this article were responses of SMUN students in answering tests of English as an end of first quarter (Cawu I) test. The results of the study sugget that Rasch approach might be implemented to plot items from different classes in one single metric scale. This single metric would be useful to monitor student's progress in learning. It is suggested that the testing procedures be implemented which give rise a multilevel testing for end quarter tests in the future

Abstract

The study was intended to develop students' audience/purpose awareness in writing through the implementation of audience/purpose-related writing activities. A collaborative-action-research design was employed, involving 2 researchers and 2 elementary school teachers. Thirty three (33) fourth-graders of elementary school participated in the study. Data in the form of students' writings were collected in the first and second terms of the 1999/2000 school year, which were then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The findings suggest that at the end of the second cycle of the action research the students' ability develops, which is indicated in the audience adaptations found in their writings and in the use of appropriate genre and register

Abstract

Children's prejudice is still s problem in the educational world. The importance of reducing children's prejudice through the teaching of multicultural perspectives in social studies education (IPS) is relevant to education in a multicultural perspectives is crucial to prevent Indonesian students from negative prejudice to other groups. The basic education conditions for reducing the development of student prejudice are democratic school environment, the teachers' role and schools' multicultural curriculum. Indonesian teachers can develop some instructional strategies which are appropriate to the problems related to the prejudice.

Abstract

Human resources in the global era should be creative, competitive, and science and technological oriented. This quality will be achieved if education is aimed at creating opportunities to develop the students' affection to learn from or by themselves. Educational process should apply a heuristic approach characterized by utilization of enquiry methods, experiments, projects, etc. The existing educational institutions should be handled by a perfect educational management. It is a management emphasizing the needs of educational consumers, aspecially students, optimizing role of the senate or school council as motor and source of ideas for development of the institution, utilizing a decentralization system, mobilizing public funds to speed up the institution, applying the principle of peosonnels' participation, and improving community cooperation and control

Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between clients' perception of counseling, counselors' communication skills in counseling and clients' self-disclosure, as well as the differences of clients' self-disclosure in counseling in terms of their sexes. Subjects consisted of four counselors and eight clients. The data were collected by questionnaires and scoring-criteria and analysed by Spearman rank order correlation and Mann-Whitney U test. The findings showed that there was no significant correlation between clients' perception of counseling and self-disclosure in counseling, but there was a positive correlation between counselors' communication skill and clients' self-disclosure. There was no significant difference between clients' self-disclosure in counseling for female and male clients, but there was a difference in clients' self-disclosure toward female and male counselors. Female and male clients were more disclosed toward female-counselors.

Abstract

Autism is the continuum of impairments. Children with autism show intellectual, social, emotional, and language or communication disorder. Collaboration is an important aspect in delivering education/intervention for children. Professionals have to have knowledge and skill related to autism and have to team up with parent in dealing with the disorder. The unique profile of the individual with autism calls for emphasis in the areas of communication skills, social-emotional, behavioral, and sensory regulation, and communication. Pre-identification of the children may help teachers and parents to make decisions whether the child needs a referral or not. In this case, Indonesia needs to make more political will in order to implement autism education in various setting to address immediate needs of the children before the problem becomes more complicated.

Abstract

Religious Education, as a component of National Education System, has an important role for developing Indonesian citizens who have imam (belief) and taqwa (faith) to One God. That is why UUSPN 1989 and GBHN 1993 put Religious Education in the curruculum as a compulsory subject in schools. This research has identified what strategies and efforts have been taken by religious teachers for undertaking religious instruction in schools and identified what factors have stimulated or disturbed the application of religious instructions. The results indicate that religious teachers have tried to apply religious instruction as a basis for developing Indonesian citizens. The researcher recommended that the findings be used to increase religious instruction in all schools and in designing further research
