Abstract

High quality of instructional design is needed to reach high instructional quality. It should be designed based on the assumption that different types of conditions and learner outcomes required different methods. In fact, this assumption has been ignored by the social studies teachers. It brings on low quality of instruction. Component Display Theory (CDT) model gives a set of instructional prescriptions based on the link and match of condition variables and those of the methods. CDT is coming up to overcome and keep the quality of instruction. The result of this research and development proved that instructional design being developed based on CDT model is better than those of the conventional methods.

Abstract

The transactional theory signifies that both the reader and the text play important roles in the formation of meaning. Meaning is produced by continuous transaction between the reader and the text, employing the meaning potential of the text and the reader's experiential reservoir. While the reader is active in selecting and synthesizing the potential in his reservoir, the text contributes to the shaping of his selection and hypotheses, resulting in an interplay between them. Reading and writing are interrelated skills in which the transactional theory is also applicable. The transactional theory provide some implications for the classroom language instruction. Then, an experience in doing journal writing for an English reading class, as one way to put the theory into practice, is presented.

Abstract

Reader-Response Criticism proposes a new way of looking at literary text. One of the writers of this criticism discusses about 'literary competence' which entails the idea of 'ideal reader'. The writer proposes the idea of 'ideal audience' to work with fields of art other than literature. In an attempt to give the proper appreciation of art, norms are required, and norms in art can be arrived at using the concept of 'ideal audience'. It is a fact that norms are normally contextual, not universal, and change according to the change in the concept of art creation. Then the question is why take the trouble of forming norms if they keep changing?
