Abstract

Learning a foreign language and being first-year students at the same time can be challenging as they struggle to make the transition in learning a new language and adjusting to their new lives as a university student. Students have to deal with not only the academic challenges but also the adaptation challenge since they are making a transition to their new day to day life on campus. One of the significant challenges students frequently faces as a foreign language learner is a lack of communication confidence, which can turn into a hampering factor for their academic achievements. This mixed-methods study aimed to examine students’ communication apprehension (CA) level and explore factors that contributed to their current level of CA. In this paper, the authors measured the level of CA in 57 first-year students of French Language departments in an Indonesian university. Quantitative data was analysed via McCroskey’s Personal Report of Communication Apprehension (PRCA-24). Qualitative questions explored how the first-year students perceived their senses of experiencing the communication apprehension. In addition, the qualitative thematic analysis was utilised to analyse the qualitative data. The findings indicated a moderate level of CA in most of the first-year studentssuch as  fear of negative evaluation which was considered as the leading cause of the students’ high level of anxiety., Meanwhile, while prior knowledge and  a supportive teacher-student relations were appraised as the main foundation of the low level of CA students.

Abstract

This paper investigates the preferred order of reading strategies at three ability levels by L1 Arabic learners of English in an EFL setting. Then it explores whether there was a relationship between ability level and strategy use. Ninety-two EFL college students enrolled in a reading comprehension class participated in this study. They took a TOEFL reading section to determine their reading abilities/levels, and then they completed a biographical and the Survey of Reading Strategies (SORS) questionnaires. Then, statistical analyses were conducted. The results showed that each ability level reported strategy use differently in terms of order and intensity. There was also a statistical significance in strategy use between the high ability and the low ability levels. The low ability level participants reported higher use of the global reading strategies than the high ability group. However, no statistical significance of association was found between reading ability and strategy use

Abstract

Facebook has become a worldwide phenomenon and is one of the greatest important means of communication between people. Given that teenagers and emerging adults are typically concerned with peer acceptance, physical appearance and the self-impressions they convey, they are active users of social networking sites (SNS) because these sites provide platforms for them to connect to their peers and facilitate identity construction and experimentation within a social context. The present study aims to address the gap about how teenagers and emerging adults in the Malaysian context present themselves by analysing the photos which they posted on Facebook and to examine online self-presentations in Facebook between teenager and emerging adults. A quantitative analysis (percentages of the representational and interactional meaning) and qualitative analysis was conducted on 200 images of teenagers and emerging adults, which were collected from 40 participants (5 images from each participant). The 40 participants who consisted of teenagers and emerging adults were selected based on gender, age, geographical location and Facebook access. Kress and van Leeuwen’s (1996, 2006) metafunctional framework was employed to analyse the photos. The results show that there are similarities and differences in terms of self-presentation. Teenagers and emerging adults posed differently, with regard to the shot, gaze and angle, the location of the photos, their actions in the photos, their position (position or placement of the participants in the photo) and the relation between the image background of the participants. This study also found that teenagers and emerging adults in Malaysia exhibit behaviors which can be considered universal based on the visual analysis of their online photos. An important contribution of this study is how culture and religion contribute to the types of photos and poses posted by both groups on Facebook.

Abstract

Recent studies show that lexical bundles in English are pervasively found in academic discourse. In addition, the characteristics of lexical bundles found vary and differ across registers and genres. Nevertheless, it is still interesting to carry out in languages other than English. This study aims to discover the characteristics of Indonesian lexical bundles that cover frequency, structure, and function in research articles. This study adopted a mixed-method. Identification of the lexical bundle was carried out using WordSmith 7.0 on a corpus comprising 3,125,546 words, taken from 1126 texts, and consisting of six disciplines. With a frequency threshold of 40 per million words and a minimum distribution of 5 texts, 197 lexical bundles have been obtained, consisting of three- to six-word bundles with a total occurrence of 51,813 times. In terms of structure, the incomplete structure is dominating the bundles by 78.7%, with a total frequency of occurrence 38,749 times. This research finds that the pattern of lexical bundles can be classified into five types: noun-based, prepositional-based, verb-based, adjective-based, and clause-based bundles. Lexical bundles in research articles are generally clause-based (49.2%). This indicates that Indonesian lexical bundles vary in structure. The use of clause fragments and passive verbs are the main features in this genre. In terms of the discourse function, research-oriented bundles are the functions that are commonly used, while participant-oriented bundles are the least. Each discourse function has its own structural characteristics. It is also found that one lexical bundle can have two functional categories. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the characteristics of written academic discourse. From the pedagogical point of view, the findings can be used as learning material for both native and non-native speakers.

Abstract

This paper considers the exploration of genre and register of historical texts recontextualised in online media and school textbooks through the lens of Systemic Functional Linguistics especially by exploring their discourse semantics and register features. Particularly, this paper shows how the relation between discourse semantics resources and register variables contribute to the overall organisation of the recontextualized history genres. This paper provides a detailed qualitative analysis of discourse semantics as instantiated in the deployment of APPRAISAL, IDEATION, IDENTIFICATION, and PERIODICITY to give a clearer picture of how history genres in the media are established. A set of corpora consisting of historical texts from online media and school textbooks was used as a main source of data in this study. The historical texts collected from online media were from various platforms including online newspapers, online magazines, encyclopaedia entries, and universities websites/blogs. For the illustrative purposes, two texts from the corpora were selected for a detailed analysis using the discourse semantics toolkits to find out similarities and differences in terms how an historical event – The Great Fire of London – was established.  The analysis found that there was a tendency that historical events could be reconstrued in the media through different ways. The first text informs readers about the fire and its significance in a chronological manner. The second text provides an explanation of the influence of the Great Fire to other historical events. This paper also suggests that history genres tend to be ‘evolving’ as reproduced in varied media discourses. Though still at the infancy stage, this paper offers a great insight into how genres are organised in relation to the choices in register variables and discourse semantics.

Abstract

The use of YouTube resources as learning materials becomes increased in English language teaching (ELT), especially when implementing the content-based instruction (CBI) approach. In addition to its importance during the recent global restriction caused by the Corona Virus Disease (COVID-19), one of the benefits of using YouTube is perceived to provide authentic learning, which can improve the student learning experience, hence prepare graduates in the future career. While several studies have shown the benefits of using videos in ELT classrooms, this study argues that consideration for suitability and relevance of the visual materials should include the contained meaning potentials; experiential, interpersonal, and textual aspects. The study analyzed three videos used as teaching and learning materials in a Maritime English course at a vocational university where the research was conducted. Foregrounded by SFL theories, the analysis of the videos utilized Multimodal Video Analysis (MMA) Software to present a selection process of teaching and learning materials in the form of YouTube videos. Findings show the specifics of the meaning potentials in the videos used for the teaching and learning materials of the Maritime English course. The results also highlight the positive qualities and drawbacks identified in the videos. Additionally, the findings of the study provide guidelines for selecting video materials suitable and relevant to the Maritime English course in vocational higher education in Indonesia.

Abstract

The growing emphasis on emerging technologies in education has required in-service teachers to develop more technological knowledge. However, little is known about the application of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPACK) on subject matter knowledge in language teaching. This qualitative study examined five writing teachers’ implementation of instructional objectives, instructional strategies, and technologies to teach writing as well as their assessment of learning using the TPACK-Writing perspective. Lesson observations were conducted for each teacher. Adopting a case study design, the observation transcripts were analyzed with a focus on the teachers’ execution of the instructional objectives, instructional strategies, and technologies to teach writing as well as their assessment of learning. The results showed that the complex nature of writing pedagogy with TPACK-Writing as a construct was mediated by cultural factors such as an examination-oriented system and teacher-centered pedagogy. The results also suggested that the application of TPACK-Writing should involve a student-centered approach rather than a teacher-centered approach, which implies the need for teachers to acquire a high level of knowledge of learners and the instructional context to promote effective pedagogy.

Abstract

This action research examined the roles of writing instruction involving metacognitive and critical thinking strategy to improve argumentative writing skills of college students in Indonesia. Argumentative writing is one of the pivotal topics among researchers investigating ways to improve college-level writing. This study involved 88 students of three parallel classes enrolled in the writing skill development course. Employing Kemmis and McTaggart's (1988, 2014) model of action research, this study employed a three-cycle action study in one semester, covering four stages of learning tasks: understanding of problem, monitoring of students’ learning activities, problem-solving, assessment, and conclusion drawing. Each cycle provided learning exercises of metacognitive and critical thinking to hone the students’ argumentative writing skills. Referring to critical skill criteria as a baseline, the analysis found that employing metacognitive and critical thinking process in the instructional treatments enabled the students to improve their argumentative writing skills. The finding indicates a pivotal role of incorporating metacognition in writing instruction as a strategy to improve college-level writing skills.

Abstract

Despite the growing body of literature on the role of Mobile Instant Messaging (MIM) in supporting educational practice, little comprehensive understanding could be gained on how to scrutinize dialogue between teacher and students in MIM for the sake of students’ meaning-making. Thus, this study explored the process of teacher-students dialogic interaction in a MIM group as a viable pedagogical activity in fostering students’ establishment of voice in argumentative writing. Particularly, it focused on the construction of Engagement resources (Martin White, 2005) as the realization of voice in the students’ writing. To reach the objectives, a qualitative case study with multiple data sources were employed, i.e., the records of instant messaging conversation, students’ argumentative text, interview, and observation. The findings revealed that the teacher-students’ discussions in the instant messaging space were enjoyable activities that could support the students’ awareness of Engagement resources because they allowed the discovery of repertoires through reasoning, problem-solving, and peer learning. Furthermore, although there were various uptakes of Engagement resources in the students’ text, most students showed progressive achievements in applying the sources effectively in their writing.

Abstract

Learning theories have seen the development of students’ higher order thinking skills a quintessential educational goal for all students, as the absence of such skills in learning leads to students’ difficulty in answering questions that are analytical, critical, creative, and problem-solving. What is more, the prevailing literacy scoring instruments have yet to take into account the Indonesian cultural context despite the fact that culture is such an important vehicle in strengthening the identity of a nation. In order to address this problem, employing a research-and-development method, a HOTS-based reading literacy scoring device model was proposed in this research. In the development stage, the model was tested to 476 junior high school students in two separate islands in Indonesia: Java and Bali. The results of the qualitative assessment from the experts showed that the product developed in principle had fulfilled the requirements. Meanwhile, the validity and reliability test results demonstrated that the instrument under investigation had met the requirements as a standardized reading literacy assessment product.  Implicationally, therefore, the proposed model can be utilized in assessing students’ reading skill in Indonesian contexts.
