Abstract

This study aims to analyze language style (figurative language) as a narrative reflection in the fictional prose of the short film Niko: Torang Pu Warna Beda Tapi Satu Dalam Cinta, produced by young West Papuan filmmakers and set in Sorong, Papua. The film portrays the dynamics of bullying and social diversity within a multicultural community. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach, data were collected through systematic viewing and note-taking of the film's dialogues and narration. Analysis focused on dialogue and narrative sequences containing localized language styles, emotional expressions, and social symbols. The findings reveal four principal functions of language style in the film: (1) as a reflection of local Papuan cultural identity, (2) as a means of constructing and differentiating character, (3) as a medium for representing social conflict and diversity, and (4) as a vehicle for conveying moral messages. The parallel deployment of connotative and narrative language data, eight instances each, demonstrates that conflict and resolution are proportionally structured within the film's narrative architecture. It is concluded that language style in this film functions not merely as a communicative instrument but as an ideological one medium affirming the values of unity in diversity within Papua's multicultural society.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of reading comprehension difficulties experienced by Grade V students at SD Negeri 3, Sorong Regency, and to identify the factors contributing to those difficulties in Indonesian Language learning. A qualitative approach with a case study method was employed. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Research subjects comprised five Grade V students identified as experiencing reading difficulties, selected from a class of 20. Data analysis followed the qualitative interactive model encompassing data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings indicate that the overall reading ability of Grade V students at SD Negeri 3, Sorong Regency, is categorised as adequate, with 5 out of 20 students demonstrating low reading ability. Three categories of reading comprehension difficulty were identified: (1) failure to observe punctuation marks, manifested in 3 out of 5 students; (2) non-fluent oral reading, which prevents adequate processing of text meaning; and (3) inability to comprehend text content, identified in 4 out of 5 students and closely associated with limited word recognition, low reading fluency, and inadequate vocabulary. Two interacting categories of factors contribute to these difficulties: (1) psychological factors, including low reading motivation, limited reading interest, and poor self-confidence; and (2) school environment factors, including classroom noise due to proximity to a busy road and the use of predominantly lecture-based instructional methods. The teacher's responsive efforts include employing effective instructional strategies (discussion and demonstration methods), building student self-confidence through positive reinforcement, and implementing reading remediation programmes.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) approach on students' learning interest in Indonesian Language among Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1, Sorong Regency. The research employed an ex-post facto quantitative method with a simple linear research design. The population and sample comprised 25 Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1, Sorong Regency; total (saturated) sampling was applied. Data were collected through interviews, observation, questionnaires, and documentation. The questionnaire was administered in two stages: a pre-intervention condition (initial learning interest questionnaire, administered 17 September 2024) and a post-intervention condition (final learning interest questionnaire, administered 27 September 2024). Instrument validity was confirmed using the Pearson product-moment correlation (r-table = 0.444 at df = 18, α = 5%); all items met the validity threshold (r-count > r-table). Instrument reliability was assessed using Cronbach’s Alpha, yielding a coefficient of 0.656, confirming reliability. Normality testing (Lilliefors/Kolmogorov-Smirnov) produced significance values of 0.200 for both initial and final conditions (> 0.05), confirming normal data distribution. The mean learning interest score improved from 64.11 (initial condition) to 73.47 (final condition), representing an improvement of 9.36 points. One-sample t-test hypothesis testing (test value = 57.9) yielded a t-count of 5.242 against a t-table of 1.734 (df = 18; α = 0.05), with a significance value of 0.000 (< 0.05). H₀ is rejected and H₁ is accepted. It is concluded that the Project-Based Learning approach has a statistically significant positive effect on the Indonesian Language learning interest of Grade VII students at SMP Negeri 1, Sorong Regency.

Abstract

This study investigates how teacher skills contribute to enhancing reading interest among second-grade students at YPK Klasaman II Elementary School, Sorong City, while identifying the obstacles encountered and the adaptive strategies employed to address them. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, the study was conducted over two cycles involving 20 second-grade students. Data were gathered through structured observation, semi-structured interviews, field notes, and documentation. The findings indicate that the implementation of letter card games, group reading activities, hand puppet media, and effort-based reward systems rendered the learning process more engaging and significantly fostered students' reading motivation. Student participation increased from 60% to 85%; the number of students attaining the Minimum Competency Criterion (MCC) rose from 3 to 7; reading anxiety notably diminished; and several students began practicing independent reading at home. Principal challenges, including disparities in reading ability, low self-confidence, and inadequate classroom conditions, were systematically overcome through individual mentoring, differentiated media use, and a supportive pedagogical approach. These results confirm that creative, adaptive, and context-sensitive teacher skills are effective in promoting reading interest at the elementary level.

Abstract

The rapid pace of globalization has raised concerns about the erosion of local wisdom as a foundation for character formation among the younger generation, including the local wisdom of the Bugis community in South Sulawesi. Previous studies on the values of siri’, pacce/pesse, sipakatau-sipakalebbi-sipakainge, and tabe’ have generally been discussed separately and descriptively from an ethnographic perspective, leaving a gap in systematic conceptual maps that illustrate the interconnections among these four values as sources of holistic character education in elementary schools. This conceptual article aims to construct such a conceptual map through a library research approach, employing thematic-conceptual analysis of recent literature (2016–2025) on Bugis-Makassar local wisdom and character education. The findings indicate that these four values can be mapped onto four cyclically interrelated character dimensions: self-integrity (siri’), empathy and social solidarity (pacce/pesse), mutual respect (sipakatau-sipakalebbi-sipakainge), and politeness through behavioral habituation (tabe’). The resulting conceptual map integrates these constructs and charts their alignment with the dimensions of the Pancasila Student Profile, positioning Bugis local wisdom as a glocal pathway for character education in elementary schools. Further educational design research is recommended to empirically test the application of this conceptual map.
