Abstract

This study aims to determine whether emotional intelligence can influence how students think when solving math problems in elementary school. Specifically, this study focuses on three main things, namely: (1) determining the level of students' emotional intelligence, (2) observing the relationship between emotional intelligence and students' mathematical thinking abilities, and (3) determining the role of teachers in helping students manage their emotions when learning mathematics. This study employs a qualitative descriptive approach involving four fifth-grade students from SDN 1 Pesanggrahan, selected based on high, moderate, and low emotional intelligence categories. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, then analyzed according to themes aligned with mathematical thinking indicators and Goleman's emotional intelligence theory. The results of the study indicate that students with high emotional intelligence tend to think more systematically and are able to reflect on their thinking processes, while students with moderate and low emotional intelligence tend to experience difficulties. This study highlights the importance of mathematics education that also cultivates students' emotional intelligence, as well as the need for teaching strategies that balance emotional and cognitive aspects at the elementary school level.

Abstract

Computational thinking is an essential skill in the digital age, particularly in Numerical Methods courses that require logical, algorithmic, and technology-based problem solving. However, students often find it difficult to acquire algorithmic thinking and abstraction while using computational tools to apply numerical techniques. This study aims to assess the computational thinking abilities of Universitas Banten Jaya students by examining their algorithmic and abstraction indicators during Numerical Methods exercises in Microsoft Excel. This study, which employed a descriptive quantitative–qualitative methodology, involved 62 students who were enrolled in the Numerical Methods course during the Odd Semester of the 2025–2026 academic year. Data for the midterm exam was collected via students' responses to computational essays that involved the development of algorithms, their application in Microsoft Excel, and the analysis of their results. Qualitative data was evaluated using content analysis, and quantitative data was evaluated using descriptive statistics. The results showed a medium level of computational thinking skill with an average score of 66.29. The achievement scores for the algorithmic and abstraction measures are 67.34% and 67.74%, respectively. These findings suggest that more structured and digitally integrated training is needed to improve students' computational thinking skills.

Abstract

Mathematical problem-solving ability is a fundamental competence in the Merdeka Curriculum, demanding student adaptability to global challenges. However, empirical reality reveals low student achievement due to the dominance of conventional teaching methods that overlook students' cognitive diversity. This study offers a solution through the integration of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model with the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) approach to create inclusive and adaptive learning. The objective is to systematically evaluate the distribution profile, integration patterns, and effectiveness of this model on students' mathematical abilities. This study employed a Systematic Literature Review (SLR) method using the PRISMA protocol to ensure methodological rigor. The selection process involved screening 991 initial articles from Google Scholar, ERIC, and Scopus, filtering 50 duplicates and 880 irrelevant entries, resulting in 22 empirical articles published between 2020–2025. The concrete results indicate a significant upward trend in publications, with a dominant integration pattern where TaRL is applied through content differentiation in the orientation phase and process differentiation in the investigation phase. The implementation of this model effectively enhances problem-solving skills and mathematical literacy by keeping learning challenges within the students' Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD). This study contributes to the literature by providing a specific pedagogical framework for integrating PBL and TaRL, bridging the gap in heterogeneous classrooms. Future research is suggested to expand on longitudinal studies and the use of adaptive technology to address classroom management constraints.
