Abstract

Vocabulary mastery is one of the fundamental components of English language learning, as it serves as the foundation for developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. It plays a crucial role in learners' ability to understand information, communicate effectively, and express thoughts in both oral and written forms. Extensive vocabulary knowledge enhances reading comprehension, improves listening accuracy, supports fluent speaking, and facilitates effective writing. Conversely, limited vocabulary often becomes a major barrier to language acquisition, reducing learners' confidence and restricting their ability to communicate meaningfully. Therefore, developing vocabulary is considered one of the primary objectives of English language instruction and an essential determinant of learners' overall language proficiency. However, many junior secondary school students continue to face difficulties in acquiring English vocabulary due to the use of less engaging teaching methods and the limited utilization of interactive learning media. This community service program aimed to improve the English vocabulary mastery of students at MTs Darul Falah through audio-visual media-based training. The training employed educational videos, images, animations, and interactive audio designed to create a more contextual, engaging, and communicative learning experience. The implementation methods included material presentation, demonstrations, hands-on practice using audio-visual media, vocabulary exercises, and learning outcome evaluation through observation and participant feedback. The results demonstrated that the use of audio-visual media significantly enhanced students' active participation, learning motivation, and understanding and mastery of English vocabulary. Furthermore, participants showed high enthusiasm throughout the training process because the learning materials were presented in an interesting and easily understandable manner. Therefore, audio-visual media-based training represents a promising instructional strategy for enhancing English vocabulary mastery among MTs Darul Falah students. This approach not only facilitates more meaningful and engaging vocabulary learning through multimodal input but also encourages active learner participation and long-term vocabulary retention. In the context of pesantren education, integrating audio-visual media into English instruction can help prepare santri with the language competencies needed to access global knowledge, engage in intercultural communication, and contribute to international academic and religious discourse while maintaining the core values of Islamic education.

Abstract

This Community Service Program (PKM) was conducted at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Nahdlatul Ulama (MTs NU) 09 Wringin, Bondowoso Regency, to optimize students’ Qur’anic reading abilities through a group-based Tahsinul Qiro’ah mentoring program. The program was motivated by the heterogeneous Qur’anic reading abilities of eighth- and ninth-grade students, as well as limited instructional time and a shortage of mentors in the Diniyah Pagi program. The program employed a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, actively involving students and the madrasah through several stages, including initial assessment, grouping students according to their ability levels, tahsin mentoring, Qur’anic reading practice, evaluation, and follow-up activities through peer tutoring. The participants consisted of 40 eighth- and ninth-grade students. The results demonstrated improvements across all assessed aspects of Qur’anic reading ability. Students’ makhraj accuracy increased from 68.5 to 82.3, representing an improvement of 13.8 points. The application of tajwid rules increased from 65.2 to 81.7, representing an improvement of 16.5 points, while reading fluency increased from 70.1 to 84.6, representing an improvement of 14.5 points. Overall, the average Qur’anic reading ability score increased from 67.9 to 82.9, representing an improvement of 15.0 points. Changes were also observed in the distribution of students’ ability levels. The number of students in the basic category decreased from 18 students (45%) to 8 students (20%), while the advanced category increased from 7 students (17.5%) to 15 students (37.5%). These findings indicate that group-based Tahsinul Qiro’ah mentoring improved the quality of students’ Qur’anic reading while reducing disparities in their reading abilities. The model also provides an alternative strategy for addressing limitations in mentoring personnel and instructional time through ability-based grouping and peer tutoring. Therefore, group-based Tahsinul Qiro’ah mentoring can serve as a structured, participatory, and sustainable strategy for improving Qur’anic reading instruction in madrasah settings.

Abstract

Entrepreneurship students have diverse business ideas, but not all have experience in systematically preparing business proposals. Initial conditions showed that only 3 of the 15 participants (20%) had previously prepared a business proposal, with an average pre-test score of 52.3. This condition indicates the need for training that integrates conceptual understanding with practical proposal development. This community service activity aimed to improve students’ knowledge and skills in preparing business proposals through experiential learning-based training. The activity was conducted through a one-day workshop consisting of a pre-test, material presentation, demonstration, proposal writing practice, mentoring, presentation, peer review, feedback, and post-test. The success of the activity was assessed based on improvements in knowledge scores and the quality of proposal drafts. The results showed that the average score increased from 52.3 to 78.6, representing a 50.3% increase. All 15 participants produced initial business proposal drafts with an average quality score of 3.6 out of 5 (good category). These results indicate that experiential learning-based training improved students’ initial knowledge and skills in preparing business proposals in an applied manner.
