Abstract

This article examines the deployment of Indonesian Societas Verbi Divini (SVD) missionaries to the Netherlands as a structured expression of "reverse mission," situating this contemporary phenomenon within a historical relationship spanning over a century. Based on fieldwork conducted in 2025, including semi-structured interviews with six Indonesian SVD priests currently serving in the Netherlands and participant observation in Dutch parishes, this study identifies 83 Indonesian missionaries active throughout the country, with the SVD emerging as the most numerically prominent male congregation. The article further argues that the current movement of Indonesian SVD missionaries to the Netherlands is not a spontaneous response to modern clerical shortages, but rather the latest chapter in a reciprocal relationship that began when Dutch SVD missionaries arrived in Indonesia in 1914. This reverse mission embodies a living theology of reciprocity, wherein the fruits of past evangelization return to revitalize an increasingly secularized Church. These findings contribute to the field of missiology by highlighting structured religious orders, rather than diaspora communities, as the primary institutional vehicles for reverse mission, and by demonstrating that historical missionary ties fundamentally shape contemporary currents of reverse mission.

Abstract

Modern theological discourse and popular culture frequently generate various speculations concerning the identity of Jesus that do not always align with the theological witness of Scripture. Certain historical approaches tend to portray Jesus merely as a human figure within the context of first-century Judaism, thereby obscuring the Church’s confession of His divinity and messianic identity. In this context, the testimony of John the Baptist in John 3:30, “He must increase, but I must decrease,” serves as a significant text affirming the supremacy of Christ. Although this verse has been widely examined from Christological and spiritual perspectives, there remains a limited number of studies that specifically explore John 3:30 as a theological foundation for a leadership paradigm in Christian education. This gap in the literature constitutes the primary focus of the present study. The purpose of this research is to examine the theological meaning of John 3:30 through exegetical analysis and to formulate its implications for a Christ-centered model of leadership in Christian education. The novelty of this study lies in its effort to position John 3:30 as a paradigmatic foundation for Christian educational leadership oriented toward the supremacy of Christ, a perspective that has received limited attention in both theological and Christian educational scholarship. This research employs a library research method using an exegetical-theological approach. Data were collected through an analysis of the Greek text of John 3:30, an examination of the narrative context of John 3:22–36, and a critical review of relevant biblical, theological, and Christian leadership literature. The findings reveal that John 3:30 constitutes a theological confession of Christ’s supremacy within God’s plan of salvation. The Greek expression ekeinon dei auxanein, eme de elattousthai conveys a divine necessity whereby the glory and authority of Christ must increasingly be manifested, while the role of John the Baptist diminishes as part of the mission entrusted to him. Within the narrative framework of the Gospel of John, John the Baptist appears as a witness who directs attention to Christ as the center of God’s revelation. His testimony reflects a model of leadership characterized by humility, self-emptying, and an orientation toward the glory of Christ. This study contributes to the development of Christian educational leadership theory by affirming that authentic leadership authority is realized through a disposition that centers the entire educational process on Christ as the source, goal, and transformative center of learners.

Abstract

This study examines the tension between the Mayo Boyo (dowry) tradition of the Maybrat community in Jayapura City and Christian theological perspectives, particularly in relation to justice, human dignity, and the sacredness of marriage. It investigates how Mayo Boyo can be interpreted within a Christian theological framework without disregarding its cultural significance. Using a qualitative grounded theory design, the study employs hermeneutic analysis to examine Mayo Boyo as a socio-cultural practice in light of the Gospel. The findings indicate that Mayo Boyo functions as an important relational and symbolic institution that strengthens family and communal ties. However, it may also shift toward economic burden and the commodification of marriage when practiced without critical reflection. The study argues for a pastoral contextual theological approach that reinterprets Mayo Boyo through dialogue with Christian teachings while preserving its constructive cultural values. Such an approach enables cultural continuity while affirming the Christian principles of love, justice, and human dignity.

Abstract

Water holds a significant position not only as an ecological resource but also as a spiritual and sacred symbol within human societies. However, modernization, rationalization, and economic orientation have driven a transformation in the meaning of water, shifting it from a sacred and relational understanding toward a more secular, instrumental, and exploitative perspective. This study aims to analyze the transformation of water meanings in modern society and to examine the role of the church in fostering ecological awareness through an ecotheological perspective. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach, analyzing various literature related to the sacredness of water, secularization, ecological crisis, and ecotheological thought. The findings indicate that in traditional societies, water is perceived as part of a spiritual reality maintained through customary values, rituals, and collective ecological practices. However, the rise of a modern paradigm based on instrumental rationality has reduced water to an economic commodity, contributing to environmental degradation, particularly through livestock activities and declining ecological awareness in society. Therefore, the church plays a strategic role as an agent of value transformation, bridging local cultural heritage, scientific knowledge, and theological principles concerning creation care. This role is expressed through faith-based education, strengthening ecological ethics, reinterpreting the sacred value of water, environmental advocacy, and the development of ecotheology-based educational curricula within the church. This awareness emerges from the church’s calling to embody a contextual theological praxis in responding to ecological crises and to affirm that water protection is an integral part of Christian responsibility toward the sustainability of life.

Abstract

This article examines the economic-soteriological dimension of the doctrine of the Trinity from a biblical-theological and Pentecostal-Charismatic perspective. It does not reject the classical ontological formulation of the Trinity, but clarifies how Scripture witnesses to the saving work of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in the economy of salvation. Using a qualitative biblical-theological method, the study analyzes Genesis 1:1-3, John 1:1-14, and 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 in dialogue with contemporary discussions on the relation between the immanent and economic Trinity. The study shows that Genesis 1:1-3 cautiously opens a theological horizon for the creative work of God’s Spirit without overreading the Old Testament as an explicit Nicene formula. John 1:1-14 presents high Logos Christology oriented toward incarnation and salvation, while 1 Corinthians 8:4-6 frames the Father and Jesus Christ within Christian monotheistic confession, worship, and life. From a Pentecostal-Charismatic perspective, Spirit baptism, testimony, and altar-centered soteriology are understood as lived participation in the triune economy of salvation. The article contributes a moderated synthesis that connects biblical theology, Trinitarian restraint, and Pentecostal spirituality.
