Abstract

Contemporary Iran often appears misunderstood, both with Western media and Islamic regime propaganda failing to capture the true essence of its young generation's identities and daily lives. At the same time, there is little attention paid to the interpretive paradigm across Iranian social science and humanities academia within which positivism reigns supreme. The present paper addresses these issues by highlighting key sociocultural characteristics relevant for researchers conducting qualitative studies in Iran, particularly through focus group interviews. Drawing from detailed observations in Tehran and personal experiences growing up in Iran, this paper offers practical insights to help researchers design effective research agendas and enhance focus group studies. The aim is to guide researchers in navigating cultural complexities, avoid common pitfalls, and improve the validity of their findings by providing a clearer understanding of Iranian urban youth culture. Ultimately, the study emphasizes the importance of detailed contextual circumstances for effectively designing and successfully executing the focus group discussions.

Abstract

Rambu Solo is known as the ultimate form of respect for the deceased parents in Toraja’s culture. However, how this ceremony is viewed from the perspective of the deceased’s family responsible for carrying out the Rambu Solo, whether it is considered a source of pride or a burden, could be varied. This research aims to analyze the values contained within the Rambu Solo ceremony through the novel 'Puya ke Puya' and the perspectives of the characters within it. Sigmund Freud's psychoanalytic theories, including the concept of the ego, were used to analyze this novel. Freud's theories delve into the depths of the human psyche, exploring how unconscious desires, conflicts, and defense mechanisms shape human behavior and, by extension, the characters and their motivations in this novel. The research method used is qualitative descriptive. The research findings and observations will be elaborated and analyzed in the discussion chapter, as well as explained through a review of relevant literature related to this research. The background of this research is related to the storyline in the novel 'Puya ke Puya,' which depicts the perception of the Toraja community in the village of Kete' in conducting the Rambu Solo ceremony.

Abstract

Psychology, as the study of human behavior, has core relevance to literary criticism in its engagement with such trauma as abandonment, a formidable influence on relationships and character. In utilizing the attachment theory as the analytical framework, the current research aims to examine how the abandonment trauma of Lotso led to his attachment style and what the ensuing psychological effects of such a style were on his relationships with the other characters of the film Toy Story 3. The study conducts a qualitative descriptive analysis of Lotso’s dialogue, scenes, and plot elements in the film. The findings indicate that Lotso displays a disorganized attachment style, which entails inconsistency, mistrust, and emotional instability. His unresolved trauma is manifested through his manipulative and controlling behavior, which is indicative of extreme anger and feelings of worthlessness. The research concludes that Lotso’s villainous behaviors are a result of his unhealed emotional wounds, offering a nuanced examination of his character beyond the actions of a villain. This study utilizes attachment theory to illustrate the psychological depth of fiction antagonists and the influence of early affective experiences on personality and social behavior.

Abstract

This study investigates the politeness strategies employed by hotel receptionists in Surakarta, Indonesia, focusing on greeting and offering assistance to guests. The research addresses the gap in understanding how hospitality staff strategically use language to perform Face Threatening Acts (FTAs) politely and professionally. The study employs a qualitative descriptive method, using Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory as the analytical framework. Data were gathered through non-participant observation and audio recordings of receptionist–guest interactions at two major hotels. The analysis reveals various patterns of greetings and offers of assistance that correspond to both positive and negative politeness strategies. Positive politeness is reflected in expressions that show friendliness, solidarity, and personal attention, such as personalized greetings and inclusive language. Negative politeness appears in utterances that minimize imposition or reference general hotel policies. The findings support previous studies but also highlight culturally nuanced practices in Indonesian hotel service encounters. These insights are pedagogically relevant for training hospitality professionals and enhancing intercultural communication.
