Abstract

This paper describes Indonesian university student’s willingness to actively engage in English language learning and their self-reported anxiety levels. The objectives of this study are to describe the willingness of Indonesian students to communicate in English, and to explain the relationship between anxiety and willingness to communicate in English. The participants of this study are 426 students of Bachelor’s Degree in Muhammadiyah University of Surakarta (UMS). The instruments used to gather data are questionnaire and interview. Quantitative data is analized using regression analysis (ANAREG) and qualitative data is analyzed using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that their willingness to communicate in English is very low (scored 14.21 on WTC scale) while their anxiety is at moderate level (scored 39.66 on FLCAS scale). Only half of the students (51%) have low willingness to communicate in English. More than half (68%) of students indicate that their language anxiety influences their willingness to communicate in English, while 12% of them does not show that their anxiety influence their linguistic behavior. This study finds a significant  elationship between language anxiety and willingness to communicate.

Abstract

The objective of this community serves is to give a workshop to English teachers using cooperative learning method in particular the techniques of Student Teams Achievement Division (STAD), Team-Games-Tournaments (TGT) andJigsaw STAD. This activity is also to enhance the quality of teachers in language teaching method in the class. Cooperative learning is teaching method using small group which provide students to help each other to discuss and understand lessons given by their teacher. The subject of this activity is English teachers of Muhammadiyah Senior High Schools, and Muhammadiyah Vocational schools in Surakarta. The output of this activity is participants understand and master the techniques that trained to them during the workshop. The teachers perceived that this activity is positive and very beneficial for them. They intended to implement those teaching techniques in their real English classroom.

Abstract

Pendidikan merupakan hal mendasar yang wajib dijalankan oleh setiap orang sejak dini. Orangtua mempunyai tanggung jawab besar terhadap kelanjutan masa depan anaknya, karena dengan pendidikan seseorang akan bisa mengembangkan potensi yang ada pada dirinya dan terhindar dari kebodohan. Tetapi kenyataan yang terjadi sekarang masih ada sebagian orangtua yang kurang menyadari pentingnya pendidikan terhadap masa depan anak-anaknya. Mereka mempunyai pertimbangan untuk menyekolahkan anaknya kejenjang yang lebih tinggi, khususnya untuk anak perempuan. Sebagian orangtua beranggapan bahwa anak perempuan tidak perlu sekolah tinggi-tinggi karena nantinya hanya akan menjadi ibu rumah tangga di rumah dan ilmunya tidak berguna. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengungkap apa yang melatar belakangi rendahnya kesadaran orangtua terhadap pendidikan anak perempuan di desa Tambakan, Gubug, Grobogan. Menggunakan metode penelitian kualitatif dengan pendekatan studi kasus. Unit analisis dalam penelitian ini adalah latar belakang rendahnya kesadaran orangtua terhadap pendidikan anak perempuan. Narasumber utama dalam penelitian ini sebanyak enam orang, yaitu tiga pasang orang tua. Sedangkan narasumber sekunder sebagai pendukung data dalam penelitian ini tiga orang, yaitu anak perempuan dari masing-masing orang tua. Teknik pengumpulan data pada penelitian ini menggunakan teknik wawancara semi terstruktur, dan teknik keabsahan data penelitian ini menggunakan triangulasi sumber. Hasil penelitian diperoleh terdapat enam hal yang melatar belakangi rendahnya kesadaran orangtua terhadap pendidikan anak perempuan, antara lain: pendidikan orangtua yang rendah, budaya religiusitas, keadaan ekonomi, perilaku modelling, sosial budaya, dan persepsi terhadap masa depan anak perempuan.    Education is fundamental thing that must be run by everyone early on. Parents have a great responsibility for the continuation of their childrens future, because with education a person will be able to develop their potential and to avoid stupidity. But the fact is happening now there are some parents who are less aware of the importance of education to the future of their children. They have consideration to send their child to a higher level of school, especially for girls. Most parents assume that girls dont need high school because they would just be a housewife at home and their knowledge is useless. This research aims to uncover what thing that influence the low awareness of parents for girls education in village Gubug, Grobogan, Tambakan. Research methods that be used is qualitative research methods with the case study approach. The unit of analysis in this research is the low awareness of parental background on girls education. The main informant in this research as many as six people, three pairs of parents, while the secondary informant as supporting data in this research are three people, they are daughters of each parent. Techniques to collect the data in this research uses a semi structured interview techniques, and the validity of this research data using triangulation of sources. The research results obtained there are six things behind the low awareness of parents towards the education of girls, there are: low parental education, religiosity culture , economic circumstances, behavioral modelling from previous parent, social culture, and perceptions of the future of the daughters.

Abstract

The objectives of this study are to describe the obstacles in oral English proficiency and to describe the ways in overcoming the obstacles. The respondents wereuniversity students of English Department of Teacher Training and Education ofMuhammadiyah University of Surakarta Indonesia. The samples consist of 31 malestudents and 42 female students. The instruments used to collect were questionnaire, in depth interview and class observation. This study used qualitative descriptive analysis. The results showed that obstacles that came from cognitive factors were the lack of vocabularies, grammar mastery, and pronunciation problems. From affective factors were anxiety, fear, shame, and lack of confidence. The obstacles in speaking English came from the students’ negative perception that speaking English was difficult, and the students’ laziness, they rarely practiced speaking English and the environment was not conducive. The solutions to solve the problems in practicing speaking English, for male and female students were improving vocabularies regularly, practicing speaking English independently, listening Western songs, watching English movies, practicing speaking English with each other or foreigners, reading English novels, English newspapers or English magazines, taking English course, and writing diary. The findings contribute to an understanding of obstacles and solutions of male and female students in speaking English in Indonesian context.Keywords: oral English proficiency, obstacle.

Abstract

One of the main problems faced by SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta is how to attract new students to register. Manual promotion based on leaflets and brochures currently used by the school is among the root of problems that make school only recognized by the society around the school in the restricted geographical area. Another obstacle for the community is the manual registration process for new students, which require the prospective student to come to the school. In this publication, internet technology was proposed to solve these two problems. The objectives of the community services are to widen the promotional scope of SMP Muhammadiyah 10 Surakarta and to enable the prospective student to register online via the school website. The activities of the community services are involving purchasing a web domain for school standard, hosting the website, training for administrator, and evaluation from the society. The results of the community services include school website, and the teacher has been trained as an administrator. Assessment from the society results showed that 74.68% of respondents provided positive feedback that the site is satisfying and beneficial.Keywords: PPDB online, school, website

Abstract

Information technology-based instruction (e.g. using Edmodo) gains its popularity as it is likely to strengthen the role of teachers, schools, and parents for the sake of optimizing student learning outcomes. Therefore, this study explores how Edmodo was utilized to mediate digital class in English language teaching (ELT); how Edmodo facilitated students' engagement during the class; and how Edmodo mediated teachers to assess students' learning outcomes. A qualitative approach was employed and 286 students from a secondary school voluntarily participated during the study. Interviews, online mini-polling, and document analysis were deployed as data collection methods, and data were validated by triangulation and analyzed by following the interactive model of data analysis. It revealed that Edmodo was an effective mode to mediate digital class in ELT as the students could interact with their teacher, peers, and course contents effectively, both inside and outside the classroom. The students' engagement was also better in comparison to that of the face-to-face classroom. Finally, Edmodo well-mediated teachers to carry out the computer-based test (CBT); it was an accurate mode of assessment as no cheatings were facilitated; the validity, and reliability of the test could be favorably accomplished.
