Abstract

Silica xerogel which was derived from bagasse ash originated from the solid waste of sugar cane industrywas used as Cd ion adsorbent. This silica xerogel was synthesized using the sol-gel method on pH 5 and wasapplied to adsorp Cd ion in various contact time, pH, initial Cd ion concentration and temperature. It wasfound out that the optimum pH for Cd ion adsorption was at pH 7 using 0.01 g of silica xerogel within 60minutes of contact time. The adsorption isotherm follows the Langmuir isotherm model (R2 = 0.997) and adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model (R2 = 0.998).

Abstract

The widespread use of styrofoam as food and beverage packaging is a very urgent issue to study, especiallyregarding to human health. This polymer is thought to be easily degraded by beam radiation to producemonomers that are easily oxidized to carcinogenic styrene oxides. Studies on the effects of sun and UV rayson plastic for food and beverage packaging have been carried out. Some styrofoam samples are made in theform of thin films and some are made in slabs. The samples were exposed to sunlight and the others wereexposed to ultraviolet light using 20 watts UV lamps for 10, 25, and 40 days. The effects of radiation onstyrofoam were characterized using a tensile test, FTIR, and physical observation. The results showed thatboth sun and ultraviolet radiation can cause degradation of styrofoam. Radiation of sunlight and UV lighton styrofoam generate a decrease in tensile strength, an increase in the relative concentration of styreneoxide, a change in the color of the sample from white to yellow, and cracks arise. The longer the time of sunand ultraviolet radiation can accelerate styrofoam plastics degradation.

Abstract

Surfactants are the main components in detergents. Surfactants in detergents will form a layer that spreads on the surface of the water, which can reduce the surface tension of the water and will form an emulsion the foam formation that can repel dirt. Large amounts of surfactants in wastewater discharged into the environment can cause damage to aquatic life, water pollution and endanger human health. Therefor it is necessary to separate or change them into other harmless materials before being discharged into the environment. One of the methods used is electrocoagulation. The electrocoagulation method is an environmentally friendly method of treating liquid waste by combining the principles of coagulation, floatation and electrochemistry. In this study, the electrocoagulation method was carried out by varying pH and electrolyte concentrations in the simulated surfactant waste treatment. Surfactant levels were determined by extraction of ion pair surfactant-methylene blue with an organic solvent then measured using spectrophotometer. The optimization of the method is done by determining the maximum absorption length, optimum pH, and the effect of adding electrolytes with different concentrations. The results showed that the maximum absorption at a wavelength of 652 nm.
