Abstract

Kata kunci: artikulasi, kelas bawah Jawa, Cultural Studies, Wiji Thukul THE ARTICULATION OF THE LOWER CLASS JAVANESE PEOPLE IN WIJI THUKUL’S POETRY COLLECTION PARA JENDERAL MARAH-MARAH AbstractThis study aimed to describe the articulation of the lower class Javanese people in Wiji Thukul’s poetry collection Para Jenderal Marah-Marah. It used the Cultural Studies approach and simultaneously applied it in three levels, i.e. epistemological, political, and strategic levels. The results of the study are as follows. First, there are negotiations of the lower class Javanese women with the aim of disrupting men’ cultural position which nearly reaches absolutism. Second, there is a disclosure of the other side of men’s culture, which shows values contrary to the inherent noble values with the aim of causing chaos, confronting myths, and building new myths that men are not entirely noble and or even close to absolutism. Third, there is a disclosure of a system that is structurally organized in such a way by a great narrative or a state that has not been in favor of the lower class people’s interests. Keywords: articulation, lower class Javanese people, Cultural Studies, Wiji Thukul

Abstract

This study aims to describe the intensity of the use of Javanese words and idioms inwayang poems. It employed the textual approach. The data sources were wayang poemsunder the subsection of “Lingga dan Yoni” in Tirta Kamandanu (1997), a poetry anthologyby Linus Suryadi. There were 26 poems all of which were studied. The steps includedlinguistic evidence collection, data display, and explanation of esthetic functions. Thestudy concludes that the use of Javanese words and idioms in wayang poems is intensiveenough. They are relevant to the meanings in the poems narrating wayang and supportand strengthen the meanings and existence of the Javanese culture. They also support thefunctions of poetry style beauty, especially the beauty of rhymes and particular atmospherecreation, are accurate in the condensed forms, and serve as fillers for emptiness or justsynonyms. Without knowledge and understanding of the Javanese culture, one will notunderstand the poems as well, thoroughly, and intensively as one who understands theJavanese cultural background.

Abstract

This study discusses the Dutch-Indonesian interlanguage using psycholinguistics in the syntactic level. The sentences in the interlanguage are expressed by thirty students with different language proficiency levels and are analyzed to test the prediction of Pienemann’s processability theory (2005a, 2005b, 2005c, dan 2007). This study proves the validity of the processability theory. The Dutch learners mastering sentences with the most difficult level of processability also master sentences with easier levels of processability. The results from the learners with the high proficiency support the processability theory more firmly than those from the learners with the lower proficiency. Learners rely on meaning when they are not sure of their grammatical competence. Interlanguage is formed because of the demand on the learners that in a short time they have to express concepts and ideas in their minds but the facilitating divices are still limited, while they have already mastered the first language and possibly other languages.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims to describe the demonstrative system in the Mandailing language. The data were collected from native speakers in their daily communication. They wereanalyzed by classifying demonstrative expressions based on Levinson’s theory and theiruses were described in accordance with field observations and informants’ explanation. The results of the study are as follows. First, there are three types of relative distancesfor object reference. The object reference in the three types of relative distances uses aparticular demonstrative expression. Second, a demonstrative expression for each relativedistance has the same base. This shows that there is a symmetric relationship amongdemonstrative expressions. The object relatively close to the speaker is referred to by ademonstrative expression using the element on. The object relatively distant from thespeaker but it is close to the addressee is referred to by a demonstrative expression usingthe element i. The object relatively distant from the speaker and the addressee is referredto by a demonstrative expression using the element odu.

Abstract

Kata Kunci: pemarkah wacana, fungsi tekstual dan interpersonal FUNCTIONS OF DISCOURSE MARKERS: A CASE STUDY OF A SPEAKING CLASS AT TERTIARY EDUCATIONAbstractThis study aimed to investigate functions of and students’ familiarity with discourse markers. This was a qualitative study. The data were collected through video-recording and transcription. The data analysis used Brinton’s and Alami’s theories. The study revealed all textual functions, i.e.: sequence, repair, opening and closing frame markers, filler, information indicator, topic switcher, and turn taker. The interpersonal function was almost never found because the speaker only focused on delivering materials. Further, it was noted that the speaker had limited knowledge of discourse markers so that the same discourse markers were often used. The study thus suggested the lecturer should take these into account in the assessment. Keywords: discourse markers, textual and interpersonal functions
