Abstract

This study aims to describe definite nominals in the Indonesian language in elementary school students’ writings. The data source was descriptive and narrative writing of elementary school students in Yogyakarta City. The data were analyzed by means of a correspondence method with a referential division and a distribution method with element division, repetition, substitution, and deletion techniques. Based on the data analysis, it can be concluded that definite nominals in the Indonesian language in elementary school students’ writings consist of six types, i.e. (a) personal pronouns, (b) proper nouns, (c) possessive nominal phrases, (d) definite description, (e) demonstrative description, and (f) numeral description. In the realization, definite nominals –except proper nouns and personal pronouns– are not always present with definite markers. Nominals without definite markers can be definite if they are supported by contexts clarifying the referents.

Abstract

Kata kunci: vitalitas bahasa, bahasa pertama, bahasa Sunda THE VITALITY OF THE SUNDANESE LANGUAGE IN BANDUNG REGENCYAbstractThis study aims to prove the vitality of the Sundanese language to face the Indonesian language. This was a quantitative study involving two independent variables, namely the use of the Sundanese language to confront the Indonesian language and groups of users of the Sundanese language as the first language, namely the native Sundanese families living in Bandung Regency, West Java. The dependent variable was the choice of language, i.e. the Sundanese or Indonesian language. The results prove that the vitality of the Sundanese language is strong in the family, transaction, and closeness domains; but it is weak in the official domain and that related to strangers. In terms of agreement, the family, transaction, and closeness domains also occupy a high position compared to the official domain and that related to strangers. The use of the Sundanese language with the highest frequency is in the family domain, especially when the informants talk with grandparents and fathers/mothers. The vitality of the Sundanese language lessens in the official domain and that related to strangers. Keywords: language vitality, first language, Sundanese language

Abstract

This study aims to describe topicalization in the Pakpak-Dairi language as a pragmaticsyntactic process that changes elements of non-topic into topic. The data were spoken and written data on the use of the Pakpak-Dairi language. They were analyzed by means of the distribution method using the substitution and form-changing techniques. The results of the study are as follows. First, in the Pakpak-Dairi language there are core arguments and those in the form of the oblique relation that can be emphasized through fronting. The emphasis of core arguments is made through topicalization. On the other hand, the emphasis of oblique relation arguments is made not through topicalization, but through fronting or left-dislocation. Second, the Pakpak-Dairi language has the V-O-S word order as an unmarked construction and the topicalization (O-S-V) form as a marked construction. Therefore, it can be concluded that the Pakpak Dairi language belongs to the typology group of languages not emphasizing the subject and topic.

Abstract

Indonesian revolution in 1945-1949 is a remarkable moment for all of Indonesian people which is full of heroic spirit. Interestingly, Pramoedya portrayed the revolution moment in the novel entitled “Di Tepi Kali Bekasi” with different point of view in which he used a sarcasm style of language to depicts the conditions and deliver his critics about behaviors of people from various clusters at that time. Therefore, this current study is motivated by interest to explore how satirical narrative is used in the novel. A qualitative content analysis with context unit was employed as a research method to describe and analyze in detail the description and characteristics of satire in the novel. Specifically, a concept of satire intended in this study is sarcasm, social criticism, and irony. Based on the results of analysis, there are some satirical elements in the novel namely social chaos, public unrest, bandits and robbery, betrayal, generation conflicts, youth nationalism, and immoral behavior and corruption of the army. In addition, according to Pramoedya's view, revolution is considered as an animalistic age where the revolution of soul is more important and needed by the nation instead of the armed revolution. Due to those facts, independence remains as a fake independence where unheard voice of the periphery and moral destruction are still the main problem. Generally, it is found that the satirical root in the novel is laid on two things namely Pramoedya's direct experience as a soldier and his ideas he wants to convey in the novel.
