Abstract

The development of rented multi-storey housing unit (rusunawa) is a logical event in the growth of cities. Sooner or later the development of rusunawa will be increasingly implemented in urban areas in Indonesia. Despite the fact that people will be housed in rusunawa, it is important that kinship in the community should be maintained, thus supporting communal ties, social interaction and neighbourliness. Results of the following study into community identity support these general principles. The research method adopted used both quantitative and qualitative techniques to assess residents' satisfaction, behavioral patterns and forms of social interaction. The research suggests design criteria to support residents' satisfaction with their dwelling. The research also models the patterns of residents in public spaces (hallway, kitchen and lavatories) to measure social interaction. The research case study is located in Kutobedah Rusunawa as the first rusunawa constructed by the government of Malang City in 1995. Keywords: rusunawa, satisfaction, behavior pattern

Abstract

Traditional settlement evolves through a long socio-cultural process. It commences with system of thoughts which then lead to the establishment of behavioural norms and codes. When the entire process is disseminated and handed down from generation to generation, it constructs a distinctive identity specific to particular communal entity. As part of a diverse society of the Nusantara (a name after the Indonesian Archipelago), Sasak Communities demonstrate a unique characteristic by their methods in embracing nature into their spatial organization. Socio-spatial forms of these societies are clear representations of their long spatial traditions, unique blend of native belief sistem of Sasak Boda, Hinduism, flourished in their neighbouring Island of Bali, and Islamic (or Islam Watu Telu) influence thrived in Lombok. Similar to the Balinese-Hinduism principles, Sasak Communities crucially take micro and macro-cosmos into consideration in organizing the layout and orientation of their settlement. This directs an arrangement of a well-lined and symmetrical spatial pattern. Founded by these conditions, this study seeks to explore the determining factors that guide the unique spatial structure of Sasak settlements. It summarizes that cosmological principles, the astronomical lining of the sun and the geographical direction of the mountain (Rinjani) are the three determinants, fundamental to the spatial organization of the Sasak Communities. Keywords: cosmology; spatial formation of a traditional settlement; Sasak community Abstrak Hunian dan permukiman tradisional lahir dari sebuah proses sosial budaya yang panjang.

Abstract

Padang Galak Beach is one of many open public spaces, located at Kesiman Petilan Village of Denpasar-Bali. It accommodates various activities including those dedicated to ritual, recreational, and economic purposes. The use of this public space involves many parties and interests, in which conflicts often and inevitably take place, especially when two or more interest groups come with neither an agreement nor a concerted action. This article examines the typology of conflicts encountered in this area and values associated with the occurrence of these conflicts. Discussion within is supported by data collected through interviews, physical observations, and spatial analysis. Study results show that the encountered conflicts dominantly occur due to the persistent interests of the Balinese to maintain their traditions, culture, and values trying to block the potentially impairing influences brought in by the economic agendas promoted by other groups of interests. Each of these interests possesses certain cultural values that likely differ from one to another and potentially cause conflict when a mutual consensus cannot be reached for all different reasons. Keywords: open space, public, beach, conflict, interest Abstrak Pantai Padang Galak merupakan salah satu ruang terbuka publik yang dapat mewadahi berbagai aktivitas seperti ritual keagamaan, rekreasi, maupun kegiatan ekonomi, dan terletak di Desa Kesiman Petilan, Denpasar, Bali. Abstract

Abstract This study aims at determining corporate environmental (CER) responsibilities along Kuta Beach (Bali) in relation to future forms of development, specifically the disposal of waste. For the last one and a half decades, this situation has generated such serious problems that the involvement of all stakeholders is now critical if issues are to be solved in generating a garbage free environment. The engagement of corporate hotel developers is viewed as an absolute determinant of such improvement. Here, not only is an ecologically sound approach to waste management wholly necessary, but the provision of associated infrastructure surfaces as a vital component in the process. Abstract

This is a continuation of my writing published in previous Ruang-Space Journal of Volume 4, No. 1, April 2017. When we link the word sustainable and development the water becomes muddy. As a general rule, when sustainable development is referred to, what is implicit is the sustainability of the capitalist world system, not the sustainable livelihood of its population or of nature. By itself, development is a liberal term, obscuring the so-called ‘issues’ of capitalist imperialism, class division and the creation of what can only be called the dispossessed who experience actually existing capitalism as ‘nothing short of savagery’(Amin). In the Global South, food aid is its lowest in 20 years, with the UN trying to feed one billion hungry people on $USD 1.40 a day. Of the $US 5 billion promised to the U.N. by the wealthy nations, only half was delivered in 2009. It means to cut that figure to seventy cents a day. In 1860 Marx was one of the first to draw attention to the essential unsustainability of capitalism. Correctly, he rooted his analysis to the Dialectics of Nature, probably the first meaningful text on unsustainable development ever written. Today, attempts to solve climate change at Kyoto, Cancun, Brussels, Bali, and Copenhagen have all failed disastrously, as indeed have talks to solve the pending financial Armageddon within the Euro zone. Meanwhile, the combined environmental damage of the 3000 largest global companies has been conservatively estimated at $USD 2.2 trillion. This sum equals one third of their profits, which if paid as fines could bankrupt the global financial system. Even this is trivial to American debt (personal, institutional and national) - around $US 50 trillion, a sum that can never be repaid by the world’s largest debtor nation. So the real answers to the problem of sustainability lie in the transformation of capitalism, for no ‘environmental’ solutions begin to attack the fundamental issue of environmental justice – the moral economy that lies at the heart of a sustainable planet. Forget also the idea expressed in Natural Capitalism that the capitalist system will somehow morph into an acceptable state without any change in its fundamental structure. Let us reject the perfidious term sustainability, replacing it with the dual system it represents - environmental efficiencies to describe prior technologies, and environmental justice to denote the exploitation of nature and the distortion of social relations and oppression in all its forms. Then perhaps we might avoid what Madeleine Bunting predicts as ‘the real story of the next few years’ – potentially ‘the savage dismantling of social democracy.’ In its Volume 4 No 2, October 2017, Ruang-Space Journal publishes seven articles. Detailed publications are as follows. The first article is composed by Diah Paramitha, I Wayan Kastawan, Widiastuti, entitled Nilai Signifikansi Cagar Budaya Hotel Inna Bali, Jalan Veteran Denpasar (The Significances of Hotel Inna Bali-A cultural Heritage Located in Jalan Veteran Denpasar). The second publication is written by Gusti Ayu Cantika Putri, entitled Konsep Keruangan pada Permukiman Inti di Desa Pakraman Gunungsari (Spatial Concept of the Core Settlement of Gunungsari Village). The third article is contributed by I Gusti Ayu Canny Utami, entitled Place Attachment pada Kawasan Komersial di Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur (Place Attachment on a Commercial Zone of Jalan Danau Tamblingan, Sanur). The fourth article is submitted by A. A. Ayu Sri Ratih Yulianasari entitled Rumah Tinggal Berbasis Green Building di Kota Denpasar (Green Building Houses in Denpasar City). The fifth arcticle is authored by I Wayan Yogik Adnyana Putra entitled Perilaku Pengunjung dalam Memanfaatkan Fungsi Ruang Publik di Area Monumen Ground Zero Legian Kuta (Visitors' Behaviors in Using Public Spaces surrounding the Ground Zero Monument of Legian Kuta). The sixth article is by Ni Ketut Ayu Siwalatri, entitled Representasi Sistem Sosial Masyarakat pada Pola Permukiman Desa Trunyan (The Representations of Social Systems on Spatial Pattern of Trunyan Village). The seventh article is contributed by I Nyoman Susanta entitled Makna dan Konsep Arsitektur Tradisional Bali dan Aplikasinya dalam Arsitektur Masa Kini (Meanings and Principles in Traditional Balinese Architecture and Their Applications in Today's Architecture).

Abstract

Abstract The current catuspatha of Denpasar is a legacy of the Badung Kingdom. It is composed both of built areas and an open space. These are transformed as the city changes, and the process affects the functions performed in the space. Catuspatha is a substantial traditional element of towns and should be conserved. In order to determine current transformations, a preliminary study of public perception was made using qualitative research methods. Findings demonstrate that socio-economic functions dominate catuspatha in Denpasar. This however contradicts the Spatial Plan for Denpasar which designates the area for urban governance related functions. The expectation is that the government will recognize the results of this study and consolidate a land use plan for the Catuspatha as an important legacy of the Badung Kingdom. Abstract

Commercial buildings nowadays are not merely functioned as places for buying and selling products and/or services. However, they also provide spaces for socializing, as well as recreational purposes. Fact shows that visitors have a tendency to spend times regularly at places that are not only able to accommodate their needs but also have the capacity to generate emotional ties between them and these places they are in (place attachment). The goal of this study is to identify as to how a sense of place attachment emerges between Jalan Danau Tamblingan-Sanur Corridor and visitors who visited public spaces and commercial buildings located along this corridor. It applies quantitative research metode accompanied with various deskriptive explanations. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires to 100 visitors who were selected using an accidental sampling technique. Research findings show that a place attachment in Jalan Danau Tamblingan Corridor reaches the highest level of 60% and the lowest of 40%. This statistic has been influenced by both physical and social factors, which are listed respectively from the highest to the lowest, as follows: built environment with a variant of 35, 912 %; natural environment with a varian of 11,249 %; social factor with a variant of 10, 134 %; and social symbols with a variant of 8,338%.Keywords: place attachment, commercial buildings, Jalan Danu Tamblingan, Sanur

Abstract

Abstract Indis (Indische) describes a building typology found across Indonesia. This is an historical legacy of Dutch colonization. Architecturally, buildings with this style have their own characteristics and embody specific functions that reflect historical change. Conservation in this context is understood to mean the maintenance of the original appearance, while allowing changes of use and function. In addition, the cultural significance of the original building should be conserved. This study identifies and analyses the visual character of buildings that compose the Inna Bali Hotel of Kota Denpasar – an example of Indis architectural style. It covers an analysis of architectural elements exhibited in the facade and indoor spatial formation of each building. This step is critical, prior to determining an appropriate conservation strategy which is dependent upon the cultural significance represented in each architectural element. A qualitative research approach has followed. The analysis of data sought to support fundamental. In doing so, the driving assumption adheres to the view that not all buildings are equal in their bid for conservation status, with potential divided between high, medium, and low potential. Inna Bali Hotel in this case falls in the median band. Keywords: architectural visual character, cultural significance assessment, Indis architecture, conservation Abstrak Langgam Indis (Indische Empire) merupakan peninggalan penjajahan Belanda di Indonesia. Abstract

This article aims at exploring the characteristic of spatial pattern of Wologai Settlement, a unique traditional neighborhood of Ende-Flores. It studies the natural setting; customs and traditions; as well as spatial uses and functions. These elements are considered as encompassing elements conferring to spatial traits that characterize this Wologai Settlement. This research is a qualitative research and mainly uses a field survey method for its data collection. The article has three main parts. The first explains the existing Kampung Wologai and its unique physical natural setting. The second describes fundamental physical and non-physical elements determining the spatial formation of Wologai Settlement. And lastly, the third part presents discussion over intrinsic attributes imbedded within Wologai's spatial pattern. This study construes that the prominent circular spatial pattern of Kampung Wologai, on the one hand symbolizes a strong connection with a unique concept of kinship that creates a resilient society. And it is also a product of adaptation to terraced natural topography as well as a customary concept of orienting its neighborhood toward a mountain as a sacred natural feature, on the other. Keywords: Wologai settlement, spatial pattern, space, customs
