Abstract

This paper examines the objectives and motivations behind scholarly classification and authorship among scholars of the eastern coastal regions and West Sumatra. The study reaches three main conclusions. First, not all scholars engaged in writing, nor did they share the same level of scholarly achievement, as shown through a comparative analysis of the two regions. Second, the intellectual climate of West Sumatra appears more vibrant, with a higher status of knowledge and learning. This does not suggest the absence of scholars in the eastern coastal areas, but rather that their number and scholarly output were not comparable to those in West Sumatra. Third, West Sumatra’s scholarly and intellectual centers significantly surpassed those of the eastern coasts. Scholars in the eastern regions tended to emphasize practical and behavioral Sufism, establishing numerous suluk-based institutions and lodges affiliated with Sufi orders, yet they did not develop systematic traditions of authorship to the same extent. Although Islam and Sufi orders entered both regions at roughly the same time through Sufi scholars, their trajectories diverged: the eastern coasts prioritized devotional practice, while West Sumatra combined spiritual discipline with sustained scholarly production.

Abstract

This study examines adherence to juridical madhhab and its role in preserving the five essential objectives (al-ḍarūriyyāt al-khams) of Islamic law between unity and plurality, through an analytical study of juristic disagreement. It addresses the prevailing assumption that madhhab-based reasoning constitutes an obstacle to legal reform and promotes doctrinal rigidity. The study argues instead that madhhabism represents a disciplined methodological framework that historically regulated legal disagreement, structured juristic reasoning, and safeguarded the higher objectives (maqāṣid) of the Sharīʿa from fragmentation and arbitrary interpretation. Employing an inductive-analytical method combined with comparative analysis across the four Sunni legal schools, the study draws on classical works of fiqh, uṣūl al-fiqh, and maqāṣid al-sharīʿa. Selected cases related to the preservation of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property demonstrate that juristic plurality does not signify divergence in legal objectives or a violation of foundational principles. Rather, it reflects diverse interpretive mechanisms aimed at realizing shared higher goals within varying historical and social contexts. The study concludes that adherence to madhhab remains a normative and practical mechanism for balancing unity at the level of objectives with plurality at the level of legal interpretation, reaffirming its relevance in contemporary Islamic legal discourse.

Abstract

Arabic is often perceived merely as a tool for religious communication; however, its rich semantic structure, systematic grammatical logic, and demanding usage require precision of thought and sharp analytical skills. This study aims to explain the role of Arabic language learning in enhancing intellectual intelligence, focusing on learning processes that strengthen cognitive aspects and activities that foster such development. Employing a descriptive qualitative approach through literature analysis and in-depth interviews, the data were interpretively examined to reveal the relationship between language-learning activities and students’ cognitive growth. The findings indicate that problem-solving abilities improve through activities such as developing instructional media, participating in Qira’atul Kutub competitions, and undertaking TOAFL training, all of which demand accuracy and rapid analysis. Practical intelligence develops through Muhadatsah Yaumiyah, reading exercises (Qira’ah), and mastery of word inflection (Tashrif), which cultivate cognitive flexibility. Verbal integration is reinforced through Arabic debates (Munazarah), speech training (Khitobah), and news reading (Qira’atul Akhbar), requiring precise diction and coherent argumentation. This study highlights the holistic contribution of Arabic to three key components of intellectual intelligence by integrating theoretical analysis with field-based evidence.

Abstract

This study examines the transformative agency of Anregurutta Ambo Dalle (c. 1896–1996) in constructing a resilient architecture of moderate Islamic education in Eastern Indonesia. Moving beyond conventional biographical accounts, it analyzes his leadership strategies through a multidisciplinary framework integrating diffusion of innovations theory, communication accommodation theory, and cultural hegemony. Employing a qualitative historical case study based on primary and secondary sources, the study identifies three interdependent strategies. First, Ambo Dalle enabled institutional diffusion through the hybridization of traditional and modern pedagogies within the Darud Da’wah wal Irsyad (DDI) network. Second, he pursued deliberate cultural accommodation by employing Bugis linguistic codes and the local authoritative title anregurutta, fostering voluntary value internalization while reducing social resistance. Third, the study highlights his pragmatic yet controversial political alignment with Golongan Karya (Golkar) in 1977. Rather than political opportunism, this affiliation is interpreted as a survival strategy that safeguarded DDI’s institutional continuity under the New Order regime and helped normalize Islamic moderation (wasathiyah) as cultural common sense. Overall, the findings demonstrate that intellectual actors can sustainably institutionalize religious moderation through context-sensitive strategies combining educational reform, cultural translation, and tactical political engagement, as evidenced by the enduring DDI network in pluralistic postcolonial contexts of the Global South.

Abstract

This study examines the Qur’anic interpretation of the verses on jilbab through a comparative analysis of Amina Wadud and M. Quraish Shihab, employing a qualitative and comparative approach. Moving beyond previous studies that primarily focus on methodological differences between modern and traditional tafsir, this research explores how these differences shape distinct understandings of the function of jilbab and the authority of the Qur’anic text. The findings reveal three main points. First, both scholars share a substantive common ground in considering the socio-historical context and ethical objectives of the jilbab verses rather than adhering to a purely literal reading. Second, their principal divergence lies in the conceptualization of jilbab: Amina Wadud views it primarily as a form of social-ethical guidance that is not necessarily legally binding, whereas M. Quraish Shihab understands it as a normative sharīʿah ruling with legal implications, while still allowing contextual considerations in its application. Third, this divergence reflects differing conceptions of textual authority, with Amina Wadud emphasizing the Qur’an’s universal values, and M. Quraish Shihab grounding authority in the normative structure of the text and established exegetical principles. The study concludes that differences in interpreting the jilbab verses are not merely methodological, but also epistemological.

Abstract

This study examines the application of the jurisprudential maxim “darʾ al-mafāsid muqaddam ʿalā jalb al-maṣāliḥ” (Averting harm takes precedence over procuring benefit) in the domain of personal status law, with particular reference to early marriage, polygamy without spousal consent, and marital dissolution on the grounds of infertility. These issues simultaneously encompass both potential benefits and harms. The objective of this research is to elucidate the manner in which legal maxims function as analytical tools for engaging with contemporary legal challenges, particularly within the framework of Islamic family law. Methodologically, this research adopts a descriptive-analytical approach. The study first explicates the maxim and the three focal issues, followed by an assessment of how the maxim may be applied to each case. The findings demonstrate that the maxim is applicable across the three contexts under consideration, underscoring the primacy of preventing harm even at the expense of relinquishing certain benefits. The analysis reveals that both early marriage and polygamy without spousal consent generate harms that outweigh their purported benefits, and should therefore be eschewed in light of the maxim. With respect to marital dissolution on the grounds of infertility, the applicability of the maxim is contingent upon the specific circumstances of the spouses. Where the marriage remains harmonious notwithstanding the absence of offspring, the prevention of dissolution is prioritized. Conversely, where infertility constitutes a persistent source of marital discord, dissolution may serve as a viable recourse to avert greater harm.
