Abstract

The study of ethics, particularly from the perspective of hadith in a modern context, is crucial as it represents the second source of Islamic teachings after the Qur'an. An ethical study from the hadith perspective is relevant for understanding Islamic moral teachings and their application in daily life. Hadith, being the second source of Islamic guidance after the Qur'an, provides profound and relevant ethical guidance for various aspects of life, including addressing moral and social challenges in the modern era. The importance of studying ethics from the hadith perspective becomes more urgent when related to the situation in Indonesia, a predominantly Muslim country currently undergoing reforms in politics, economy, social, and cultural spheres. These reforms are a response to the economic crisis that triggered a political crisis, with moral crises such as corruption, collusion, and nepotism often seen as primary causes of these issues. In this context, understanding and applying the ethical values found in hadith can significantly contribute to restoring morality and integrity in society. This paper aims to explore how ethical teachings from hadith can be applied to address the moral and social challenges facing Indonesia today. Through text analysis of hadith and social-political context, this research will examine how hadith principles can help address moral crises and strengthen reform efforts across various sectors. This paper is expected to provide insights into the relevance of hadith ethics in the modern context and its contribution to solving moral issues in Indonesia.

Abstract

Sufi Psychology studies continue to be explored for the sake of scientific independence. The inhibiting factor of this study is the differences in terms of paradigmatic characters of the two disciplines. The Psychology that tends towards empirical-positivism is different from Sufism which tends to be subjective-personal. However, this fact did not reduce the efforts of the scholars to build a bridge between of the two. Recent psychology studies have placed spirituality as an important element so that the Transpersonal Psychology and Humanistic Psychology schools emerged. Likewise, contemporary Sufism studies are increasingly contextual to various socio-cultural problems and are not limited to the study of the doctrines and teachings of rigorous Sufi orders. Through a literature review that is presented descriptively with a historical-thematic approach, this paper presents Sufi Psychology as a synthesis between the two disciplines. Substantially, Sufi psychology has existed in early Islamic tradition. The nature of Sufi psychology is also scattered in the Sufi tradition that developed in the 3rd and 4th centuries of Hijriyah. As for the epistemic formula, the term Sufi Psychology can be found in the studies of Javad Nur Bakhsy, Robert Frager, Amir Najjar, and Lynn Wilcox. The theme of heart, self, and soul is the main topic of this study. In practical terms, theories of Sufi Psychology can complement findings that have not been widely disclosed in psychology, especially regarding psychiatric symptoms that are observed not only from behavioral assessments, as well as their relationship to transcendent elements.

Abstract

Management is an activity, its implementer is called a manager, and the implementation process is called management. Management encompasses activities to achieve goals, carried out by individuals who contribute their best efforts through actions that have been done previously. This includes knowledge of what they should do, determining how to do it, understanding how they should do it, understanding how to organize and manage the effectiveness of their efforts. Examining the Quran with a management approach, especially in the context of da’wah management and its practice during the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), is a top priority in this discussion.

Abstract

Broadly speaking, the book by Nicolas Jonathan Woly, derived from his doctoral dissertation, discusses the diverse opinions on interfaith relations from Islamic and Christian scholars and theologians in the 20th century. Woly does not seem to want to stop at such a typical discussion; rather, he also wants to specifically examine how such interreligious relationships influence the understanding of Christians and the church in their missiological tasks. Or, as he put it, "…The Church and Christians will listen and perhaps also learn from other religious communities in matters of its mission." In this regard, Woly explicitly states that Christians and the church should also receive input from their historical experiences of encountering people of other faiths.

Abstract

In the study and research of hadith quality, the science of jarḥ and ta’dīl is one of the important ‘ulūm al-ḥadīth (sciences of hadith) that researchers need to possess. Mastery of this science is crucial for accurately determining whether the hadith under investigation is ultimately accepted (maqbūl) as a ḥujjah (a valid source for Islamic teachings) or rejected (mardūd), deemed unreliable. Hadith scholars have established classifications or degrees and levels of jarḥ, ta’dīl, and ḍabt (precision) for narrators of hadith. Their classifications are clearly evident in the expressions used, both in the statements of jarḥ and ta’dīl, as well as in the statements of ḍabt. This article provides a descriptive analysis of a highly valuable science for hadith research.

Abstract

Islamic fundamentalism in contemporary Indonesia has historical and ideological roots tracing back to the Wahhabi movement in Saudi Arabia, which emerged in the late nineteenth century. This movement, influenced by the ideas of Ibn Taymiyya and the Hanbali school, advocates a strict return to the Qur’an and Sunnah. Historically, fundamentalist ideologies have been reinforced by socio-political factors, including the colonial subjugation of Muslim nations and subsequent struggles with authoritarian regimes. The rise of modernization and secularization in the 20th century further fueled fundamentalist movements, as many Muslims perceived modernity as a threat to their religious identity. The emergence of Islamic fundamentalism is often accompanied by millenarian beliefs, which foresee the periodic revival of Islam by reformers. This ideology has contributed to various radical movements throughout history, including in Indonesia. Fundamentally, Islamic fundamentalism seeks to purify the faith by rejecting heterodox beliefs and influences deemed foreign to Islam. It emphasizes the emulation of the early generations of Muslims (al-salaf al-ṣāliḥ) and adherence to sharī‘a as the foundation of a true Islamic society. This paper examines the historical, ideological, and socio-political factors that have shaped Islamic fundamentalism in Indonesia, highlighting its responses to modernization, secularization, and perceived threats to Islamic identity.

Abstract

This article addresses the notion of the practice of allegory accomplished by Danarto, one of Indonesian writers whose literary works express much Islamic spirituality through non-Islamic characters. Like Malay Sufi writers, allegorically Danarto uses Hindu Javanese characters in his short story, Nostalgia, to express his spiritual notion. Such practice of using symbolic expression has been well known among Koran interpreters (Mufasir) and Sufi masters (Saalik) as Takwil. In this regard, Danarto expresses his spiritual account through symbolic figures used in Hindu-Javanese tradition of the Mahabharata, such as Arjuna, Kresna, Bisma, Abimanyu, and Sembadra. Different from Malay Muslim writers who used Malay Islam spiritual terms and analogies, Danarto uses those Hindu symbolic figures to express his spiritual journey rooted in Javanese culture where syncretism of various values, especially Islam, is obvious over time. His literary endeavor is part of that long tradition of Takwil practices in Malay religious works, which are substantially identified as Islamic pantheism.

Abstract

This paper describes how the influence of modernization that occurred in Turkey on the interpretation of Said Nursi, who focused on the three important points, i.e. the interpretation on science and technology, the relation of religion and state, and on gender relations. First, for Nursi, science has a neutral nature, because it needs to be appreciated, whether it comes from Islam or from the West. Second, Nursi made formulations that nationalism manifested in the form of blind secularization or excessive Westernization is wrong. Two things above, science and nationalism formula must be an integrated harmony with Islamic values and not detached from local cultural roots. Third, the issue of gender equality and the relation of men-women, for Nursi, must be realized with the aim to mutually, harmonious and dynamic life, not in the form of oppressing and to control each other.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.900
