Abstract

The critique of hadith matn is relatively rare among muhaddithin compared to their efforts in hadith isnad critique. This is not without reason, as they believe a hadith of the Prophet cannot be considered authentic without a chain of transmission connecting it back to the source, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). A well-phrased statement that aligns with Islamic teachings cannot be regarded as a hadith if the chain of narrators linking it to the Prophet is not found. Conversely, a sound isnad has no value if the matn cannot be substantiated. This paper aims to elaborate on the evolving methodology in the critique of hadith matn. This study will discuss various aspects underlying this evolution, including the crucial role of matn critique in ensuring the integrity and authenticity of hadith. Through a historical approach and critical analysis, the research will explore how scholars have developed new methods to assess the validity of hadith matn and the implications of these approaches on hadith sciences as a whole. Additionally, the paper will identify the challenges faced in the application of matn critique, such as overcoming subjective biases and maintaining a balance between isnad and matn critique. By examining the views of both classical and contemporary scholars, this research will provide a comprehensive overview of the evolution of matn critique methodology and its relevance in the modern context. This study aims to offer deep insights into the importance of hadith matn critique and encourage further research in this field, thereby enriching Islamic scholarship and strengthening the understanding of the hadiths of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

Abstract

This article discusses the relevance of Hamka's thought in Tafsir al-Azhar pertaining to global issues in modern life. Hamka is an Indonesian Muslim scholar who is well recognized. He is a modernist interpreter who writes his tafsir in Indonesian. With a descriptive-analytical method, this study reveals the contribution of Hamka's thinking in the three most challenging global domains in Muslim scholarship on issues of social justice, gender equality and religious plurality. From his thoughts it can be concluded: First, in the realm of social justice; according to Hamka, all humans have the same rights and degrees in the social and legal perspective. Second, in the realm of gender equality; men and women have equal right and there is no difference in the realm of humanity. Third, in the realm of religious plurality, Hamka believes that there is plurality in diversity. Therefore, tolerance is a necessity for every human being. The three themes carried by Hamka are based on the teachings of Islam that are very concerned about human values. Hamka's interpretation above confirms the teachings of Islam which are apropriate for all times.

Abstract

The influence of the Arabic language on non-Arab Muslim communities also implies an influence on the way Muslims worldwide think and behave. This can be seen in the tendency of Muslim communities to associate everything Islamic (in accordance with Islam) with Arab culture. Being a comprehensive Muslim (kaffah) is often expressed by adopting Arab attributes such as wearing traditional clothing, turbans, beards, robes, veils, having Arabic names, listening to desert music, and so on. The Arabic language, which has become the language of the Muslim community, carries gender biases that affect the textualization process of Allah’s words in the form of the Qur’an. This bias is reflected in Arabic grammar, where every noun (isim) in Arabic is assigned a gender (mudzakkar or mu’annats), both literally and metaphorically. Therefore, in-depth studies on the language of the Qur’an from a gender perspective are necessary.

Abstract

The lack of records about the involvement and contribution of women in Sufism texts cannot be used as an excuse that women have a small role and position in the development and dissemination of Sufism teachings, doctrines, and practices. Of the two female Sufi names, namely Rabi’ah and Aishah al-Ba’uniyyah, two big names prove that women have equal opportunities in achieving spiritual knowledge. Therefore, the writer is interested in female Sufis, especially in Western countries, where so far, many writers have focused on female Sufis in the eastern world, therefore it is very interesting to study female Sufis in the Western world and to answer questions. about; Aren’t their women in the world of Sufism? Is it true that the world of Sufism belongs entirely to men only? This paper is a paper using a qualitative descriptive approach. The author uses a literature review with the data sources used in this paper are secondary data originating from the literature such as books, journals, articles, and various sources relevant to the theme of the discussion in this paper. The results of the study describe female Sufis, namely Hajjah Amina Adil and Hajjah Naziha Adil with their organization called HNCO (Hajjah Naziha Charitable Organization) engaged in philanthropy. Then another female Sufi is Nahid Angha who is known as one of the founders of the International Sufi Woman Organization, a world Sufi women’s organization. This organization is concerned with peace programs and women’s empowerment.

Abstract

This paper specifically aims to discuss issues surrounding asbāb al-wurūd. Asbāb al-wurūd refers to the reasons or historical contexts that underlie the emergence of a hadith. Understanding asbāb al-wurūd is essential for accurately interpreting hadiths, as historical context can influence the meaning and application of the hadith. The function and relevance of asbāb al-wurūd in hadith studies are to provide a more comprehensive understanding of hadiths, help resolve contradictions between hadiths, and ensure that the interpretation of hadiths aligns with their original context. This research will explore the definition, function, and relevance of asbāb al-wurūd in hadith studies, as well as the importance of this understanding for the interpretation and application of Islamic law.

Abstract

The fundamental difference between modern scientific theory and Islam, particularly in scope and methodology, lies in their fundamental perspectives. My hope is for modern Muslim intellectuals to realize that the modern scientific worldview is not the only universal perspective. There exist other scholarly perspectives developed by classical Muslim scholars—and indeed scholars of other religions—that could be considered as alternatives, potentially more suitable for our culturally religious atmosphere.

Abstract

This writing discusses the mapping of the results of the Islamization process by scholars in Kendal, a district adjacent to Semarang, the capital of Central Java. Despite the efforts of reform initiated by Kendal’s own scholars who sought knowledge in Mecca, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries, traces of pre-Islamic customs still persist among the common people and have not been completely eradicated. This article reveals the religious practices among the supporters of small traditions within the Muslim community in Kendal.

Abstract

The presence of hadith in every human civilization demands a thorough ability to address every issue faced by the community. This is a dialectical consequence between the development of time and the demand to adhere to religious principles. However, striving towards this goal is not without obstacles, considering that the process of compiling hadith occurred thousands of years ago with multi-complex stages. Even though nowadays, the Prophet's Hadith can be easily traced in various authenticated books like the Kutub al-Sittah, this endeavor is not conclusive; many other important dimensions need to be understood. Hence, hermeneutical studies of hadith serve as a pathway to unravel the intricacies of the documented sayings, preserved over time.
