Abstract

This article tries to explain that the rejection of ‘ulamās towards Qur’ānic exegesis books (tafsīrs) is a reflection of orthodoxies protest against what they perceived as heterodoxies tafsīrs. This article also supports Arkoun’s idea that the orthodox exegesis is subject to change. This is against the idea of several Islamic scholars who perceived orthodox exegesis as something fixed and static. They believed that Sunnī is a criterion as to decide whether the exegesis belongs to the orthodox or heterodox. This article reveales that despite the long standing of Sunnīs exegesis, it is proved not to be permanent.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i2.898

Abstract

This passage discusses several key points regarding Islamic law in Indonesia: adaptability, dynamism, and ambivalence of the law. The process of adaptability of Islamic law in Indonesia demonstrates the strong flexibility of Islamic law. The dynamism of Islamic law is evidenced by meeting the contemporary needs of society and the institutionalization of customary law as part of Indonesian Islamic law and national legal development. Meanwhile, ambivalence in the law arises due to the persistence of societal elites who are focused on jurisprudence and a bureaucratic system that is often chaotic, disregarding existing regulations.

Abstract

Abstract

The dynamics of the world have entered a new phase marked by the collapse of the Soviet Union. In the past, the Soviet Union was a superpower and a formidable adversary for the West, especially America. The new powder keg is Islam versus the West. The West is alleged to be dominated by Jews. Paul Findley, for example, mentions the formidable influence of Jews in America, affecting members of Congress and the Senate, as well as executives. Many presidents of that superpower are said to be rendered powerless, even kneeling under the pressure of lobbyists. This article will attempt to analyze various upheavals and imbalances caused by the hands of Zionist Jews throughout history.

Abstract

As reflected in the title of his book, The Structure of Sociological Theory, Jonathan H. Turner explores the structure of sociological theories, categorizing them into five major perspectives: (1) functional theory, (2) conflict theory, (3) exchange theory, (4) interactionist theory, and (5) structuralist theory. Each of these perspectives has its own distinct sub-theories. This paper aims to review one of the perspectives discussed by Turner—conflict theory. Following Turner’s analytical structure, the review first examines the origins of conflict theory, which he traces back to Karl Marx, Georg Simmel, and Max Weber. The discussion then progresses to various perspectives within conflict theory, including Dahrendorf’s conflict theory, Coser’s functional conflict theory, and Collins’ exchange conflict theory. One of the most intriguing aspects of Turner’s approach is his effort to formulate theoretical propositions for each perspective. As he states in the introduction , a proposition is “a theoretical statement that specifies the connection between two or more variables.” These propositions, as formulated by Turner, have the potential to contribute significantly to theory building in sociological research.

Abstract

The long and winding historical journey of the Prophetic Hadith has placed it as a subject that is never devoid of controversy and discourse disputes. One of the crucial issues often debated across various circles revolves around the history of the writing and compilation of Hadith. Indeed, discourse regarding this codification has been wielded as a potent weapon by Orientalists and those who deny the Sunnah (a group opposing the Sunnah) to discredit the Hadith or Sunnah and challenge its authenticity as the second source of Islamic law after the Quran. The contention among Muslims, as criticized by Orientalists, revolves around the issue of the validity of the writing and compilation of Hadith when viewed from normative considerations (such as the sayings of the Prophet, the reports of the Companions, and the followers), ultimately leading to doubts about the authority of the Sunnah itself within the broader framework of Islamic Law. This paper aims to provide initial clarification on the pros and cons surrounding the codification of the Prophetic Hadith.

Abstract

This paper provides one model of research on “Anthropology of Religion”, especially related to the integration of internal conflict and religious communities that have been well demonstrated in the book: “Conflict and Integration: Different thought of Islam” by Achmad Fedyani. Fedyani find that there are five factors of religions internal conflict between the NU and Muhammadiyah, namely: problem talafuz bi al-niyyat, talqīn problems, asyrakal problems, and problems “maaruwah”. On the other side, it was found that the damping factor is the complexity of conflict and modernization; three developments of national culture, changes in the organization, awareness of the unity of traditional culture and the mixed communities.

Abstract

In the wake of 9/11 the role of religion in promoting acts of violence considered as terrorism has been widely discussed by scholars, journalists, and policy makers. Several scholars, however, claim that religion does not have anything to do with terrorism. In their views religion is innocent and victim of unscrupulous political activists. Several others do believe that religion has to do with terrorism because religion has the power to motivate people to do good as well bad things. This article aims to elaborate religious or sacred terrorism or ‘new terrorism’ according to some scholars. The first part of this article tries to elaborate the meanings of ‘terrorism’ and ‘religion’, and to explain its root and trigger causes. The second part tries to discuss the opinions of scholars who claim that religious terrorism is real and not as a mere mask of other worldly interests, to elaborate the characteristics of religious terrorism, and to explain why religious terrorism is mostly associated with Islam.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i5.915

Abstract

This study deals with Indonesian Muslim scholars’ discussions on the method of thematic interpretation of the Qur’an during the period of 20 years, from the mid-1980s to the mid-2000s. It shows that, in Indonesian discourses on thematic method of Qur’an interpretation, three issues are recurrently dealt with: what kind of themes is most desirable, what principles should be underlined, and in what way the method of thematic interpretation should be applied. While some scholars argue that it would be better if the theme selected is closely related to the real problems facing the society like poverty and backwardness, some others do not privilege a certain kind of theme over the others. Regardless of the theme or the term to be discussed, however, two principles are commonly and recurrently highlighted with regard to the application of thematic method. The first is the importance of treating the Qur’an is on its own terms as a unity. The second is the importance of paying close attention to the chronology of the Qur’an revelation. As for the issue of how the method of thematic interpretation should be applied, this study shows that there are free important models of thematic interpretation introduced in Indonesia: the one that was popularized by Quraish Shihab, the one that is introduced by Dawam Rahardjo, and the one that was named thematic-chronological method by Taufik Adan Amal and Syamsu Rizal Panggabean while discussing a contextual approach to the Qur’an.
