This paper proves that the doctrine of scientific objectivism which then leads as the final truth in the world of science is only a figment, due to the fact that the main method used in the world of science it self contains a lot of weaknesses. Therefore, scientific truth is not the only truth that is needed and used as guidance for human life, but there are other truths which are so necessary to complement the scientific truth.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i4.909

Hans-Georg Gadamer explicitly agrees with Heidegger that ‘Being’ is always been understood through the language and the dimension of time. So to catch up the Being, we need to know the Being itself, and to understand it. To understand means to perceive within the time and historicity. This paper will make clear the ontological basics of Gadamer’s hermeneutics containing: the relationship between historical aspect and understanding; hermeneutic discourse and sequential distance; prejudice and understanding; effective historical consciousness; understanding as application; and the structure of questions and answers.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i4.911

This writing shows that work of film which signs and defines realities through separation and election of meaning network fitting to certain view has limited audiences’ paradigm in defining their social realities; as if what given by film is a usual happening and should be a direction for the audiences to behave and act. The direction then is tightly attached with identification for differing between good and bad, wrong and right, friend and foe, us and them, even the most liked by the audiences is: sexual differentiation between man and woman. In this respect, to be a man or woman is presented as a different experience and cannot be the same in terms of behavior, action and role in whole life aspects. By this meaning construction, cultural hegemony starts.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i4.912

In the wake of 9/11 the role of religion in promoting acts of violence considered as terrorism has been widely discussed by scholars, journalists, and policy makers. Several scholars, however, claim that religion does not have anything to do with terrorism. In their views religion is innocent and victim of unscrupulous political activists. Several others do believe that religion has to do with terrorism because religion has the power to motivate people to do good as well bad things. This article aims to elaborate religious or sacred terrorism or ‘new terrorism’ according to some scholars. The first part of this article tries to elaborate the meanings of ‘terrorism’ and ‘religion’, and to explain its root and trigger causes. The second part tries to discuss the opinions of scholars who claim that religious terrorism is real and not as a mere mask of other worldly interests, to elaborate the characteristics of religious terrorism, and to explain why religious terrorism is mostly associated with Islam.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i5.915

Custom of wedding ceremony in Sunda ethnic has three parts: before wedding (pre-luminal), wedding procession (luminal) and after wedding (postluminal). This wedding of Sunda custom directly or indirectly has symbols and meanings which have absorbed Islamic values, which came in the fifteenth century in the Sunda Land. This paper attempts to appreciate the work of an ex-priest who now is a Muslim author, Jerald F. Dirks, entitled Abrahamic Faiths. In the context of comparative religion studies, the writer (Kautsar Azhari)asks: is this Dirks’ work a comparison or competition of religions? Kautsar concludes that the work tends to be a competition in between the Abrahamic religions. However, the match was a friendly match. Dirks’ book, even though apologetic and polemical in character, is served in polite way and style, and is a work trying to reconcile between the children of AbrahamKeywords: God, theology, monotheism.DOI: 10.15408/ref.v13i1.990
