Abstract

The low-cost apartment concept was prescribed by Government to supply residential needs. The persons with disability (PwD), constituting 0.74% of Indonesian in 2000, (Badan Pusat Statistik Indonesia, 2001) also needed the housing provision. In Surabaya, approximately five thousand (5000) PwD were documented in 2010 or 0.1% from total population (Badan Pusat Statistik Kota Surabaya, 2014). Therefore, the accessible low-cost apartment concept was needed for the provision. The 36-sqm-apartment design would cater person with a disability (a wheelchair user) and spouse were designed with five principles of inclusive design of (Tanuwidjaja, Laurens, Sulendra, & Erandaru, 2016). The design was conducted with the participatory design process and several workshops with many users spectrum (wheelchair users, blind and deaf persons). The principles implemented in the design were: User-Centered, Equitable Use but Reasonable Use, Simple and Intuitive Use, Low Physical Effort, and Prohibition of Usage Error. The five principles were implemented inaccessible doors, reachable spaces, and furniture, as well as accessible toilets. All these ensures that the apartment unit to become accessible.

Abstract

Creative industry has a significant contibution in increasing economy because it can create positive atmosphere in tourism sector. The area of Tuan Kentang 15 Ulu - Palembang is one of creative industry zones from fashion subsector which produces Jumputan and Tajung clothes which are known by many people. As one of tourism products based on creative industry, the area of Tuan Kentang has possessed five charateristics of creative tourism, i.e, tourists become part of the tourism progress, the existence of participative learning, interactive, informal, limited products, and has something to do with the local people. However, there were so many constraints, such as lack of planning and facilities needed for tourism development in this area. This influences the number of visitors coming to this area. By doing this research, there will be model of planning for creative industry zone which produces a number of clothes as an effort to improve the quality of the area and culture in Palembang. This research used descriptive qualitative and quantitative as a method in analyzing. The products of tourism by using scoring range for the products through participative place making approach. There were some stages in analyzing the data, that is by using likert scale and SWOT analysis. The result of this research composed factors and facilities that used to be created in a creative industry area, which could determine and develop the planning for tourism area based on creative industry in Indonesia.

Abstract

Indonesia has many traditional or vernacular buildings that still exist right now. Those buildings have already functioned partly as tourism asset in their areas, but so many vernacular buildings remain untouchable. Whereas, in the context of tourism, there is cultural heritage which consists of three main components: (1) monuments, (2) architecture or buildings, (3) sites. When we look at vernacular buildings in Eastern Indonesia, the possibilities those buildings to be tourism asset are high. The question should be explored is: what kind of potencies that can be explored, and in turn can be “sold” as tourism asset for vernacular buildings in the villages in Eastern Indonesia? The objective of this paper is to investigate the potencies of cultural heritage from which have possibilities to be tourism asset in several vernacular spots in Eastern Indonesia: Bayan Village (Lombok), Nua One small village in Woloara Village, Sikka and Mbengu Villages (Flores), Boti and Maslete Villages (Timor). Methods to collect data by surveying on the spot to vernacular buildings in the above locations, also surveying related and competent persons. Method to analyse the data by examining the data with tourism theories. The finding is, the potencies of vernacular buildings that can be categorized as the asset of tourism in the above villages are so many, which are architectural styles and cultural festivals in the villages, and also include the approach such as rehabilitation, renovation, restoration, and conservation.

Abstract

Many unplanned settlements have appeared in Medan City and its surrounding areas. In general, people living in unplanned settlements have come from middle to lower class communities. The process and the components of unplanned residential areas arrangements are indeed related to social situation of their inhabitants. Social circumstances of unplanned settlements in Medan City and its surrounding areas offer a challenge to research about various forms of unplanned settlements; the pattern of buildings position and roads; and the people’s mindset in building the physical environment. The settlements are formed based on the inhabitants’ mentation which has its own characteristics. The study observes the possibility of spatial phenomena in a residential area that is formed unplanned. The location of this study is on unplanned settlements inside and outside Medan City. The research area is a settlement in Kelurahan Polonia and Silalas at Medan City and Besilam Babussalam Langkat which is located outside Medan City. This study uses qualitative methods to analyze and obtain discovery. Variables and data are determined based on the research of the theoretical basis. The conclusion from this study is the form of unplanned residential district tends to born from its inhabitants’ idea and the forming process of unplanned settlements really affects the development of the settlements itself.

Abstract

Palembang is the city which is divided by Musi River. Palembang is also one of the oldest city in Indonesia. Many old settlements were built in riparian area. This geographic condition of Palembang becomes background of this research. The research questions are: what is the discrepancy between Kampoong and Colonial Settlements in spatial configuration? Does the Musi River have influence in spatial configuration on that case? This research using the space syntax analysis with the following three steps of analysis: convex map analysis, axial map analysis and visibility graph analysis. For case studies, this research names two different settlements: old Kampoong (3-4 Ulu and 10 Ulu) and Colonial settlements (Komperta Plaju and Komperta Bagus Kuning) and we use Kampung Kapitan (7 Ulu) for the comparation. As the result of this research shows that between Kampoong and Colonial Settlements have some discrepancies in spatial configuration. In Kampoong, they have a small ‘void space’, many streets between houses and the organic patterns. In Colonial settlements, the spatial configuration is planned well with grid pattern. In context influences of Musi River to the settlements, only Bagus Kuning complex that has a closed relationship with rivers because those settlements have a connection between inner ‘void space’ with riparian ‘void space’.

Abstract

Public open space (POS) does not become an adequate priority in urban planning and design in developing countries, including Indonesia. The cities are almost ‘full of buildings’ and ‘less of POS.' Meanwhile, many studies show that the POS has a significant effect on citizens’ quality of life. By this situation, the research means to explore the quality of public open space in relation to its utilization. The study observed POS in several small towns in North Sumatra Province, where new urbanized area had been rising by autonomy regulation. A visual survey was carried out to record, map and identify the quality of the public open spaces. Besides, the visitors were interviewed to get their perception of the quality of POS. The investigation indicates that almost of public life did not always equal with the design of the POS. Almost POS have no pedestrian linkage to make it connect with the other urban space. Thus, the majority of POS was alienated with the other part of cities. There was no integration with public transport, too. The facilities were less of maintenance. However, the community kept coming to the place and doing many activities. The respondents perceived the POS as quite good, but not good enough. Still, they mostly believed that the POS have a real impact on their quality of life.

Abstract

The Traditional Food Seller were mostly managed by the family, so they could be categorized as Family Businesses (FB). Furthermore, The FB in traditional food needed integrated business development strategy (related to marketing, business information system as well as architectural design). It was found during the research supported by UBCHEA in Surabaya. One of the strategies needed was to create the legal family food hawker center place quality. The strategy was in line with the Surabaya Municipality Government, The Cooperative and SME’s Business (Dinas Koperasi dan UMKM). A mini hawker center (consisting of 5 hawkers) was proposed in the roadside of the neighborhood collector. Additional to the center, a culinary park was provided onsite for catering the social interactions of Indonesian. The center was designed with creativity, but with low-cost local material such as brick, wood and bamboo. The design was also equipped with clean water, sanitations as well as food storages. All these would create positive branding and ensure sustainability of the hawker center.

Abstract

Indonesia has been experiencing population and high economic growth in line with rapid urbanization. As a consequence, the needs for living areas increased faster and enormous number of residential buildings, especially apartments, have been developed in major cities, such as Bandung, resulting in further growth of energy consumption. Thus, it is necessary to develop energy-saving sustainable apartments in Indonesia in order to cope with escalating energy issues.  This paper reveals the detailed profiles of household energy consumption of apartments in Bandung City, Indonesia. A survey within the city was conducted (n=100) in 2016 to obtain household energy consumption data of public apartments. The detailed information about household appliances and domestic energy consumption profile among households were investigated through the face-to-face interviews and the measurement of appliances’ capacities by using the watt checker. The annual average energy consumption including electricity and gas was calculated. The results show that the annual average operational energy for public apartments are 9.8 GJ/year. The annual average energy for cooking accounts for the largest percentage (48%) of operational energy followed by refrigerator (27%), lighting (10%), entertainment (9%), cooling (3%), etc. The profiles of CO2 emissions are similar with those of energy and the potential energy-saving strategies for apartments in Indonesia were proposed.

Abstract

The growth and development of Gated Community are happening around the world with no exception in Indonesia. The development happened because of rapid urban growth caused by urbanization. The important results from studying the transformation of gated community are the trend and factors that cause the change. The purpose of this research is to predict, prepare and control the growth of formal urban housing in the future. Factors led to the emergence and growing rapidly of a gated community in Southeast Asia is a combination of socio-economic background, culture, and security. Research is conducted by two approaches. Firstly, are the external aspects such as regulation of formal housing, political condition, and real estate market condition. Secondly, are the internal issues such as the concept of settlement planning and the characteristics of the occupants. This study was conducted in three residential development in the city of Medan which represent in the 1980's, 1990's and 2000's, namely Taman Setia Budi Indah, Graha Bumi Asri and Graha Metropolitan. The research’s result shows the factors of changes occur in the privatization of public space, exclusivity and the need for security. The indirect phenomenon of gated community growth is a reflection of a modern city life's critique, because of the safety reduced. If these are not anticipated soon, it will form the structure of fragmented urban space with the privatization of public space legally

Abstract

Bandung as a growing city has transportation problem as other big cities have in Indonesia. About 3.55 million person/day (7.2% move in the morning peak hour) is moved within the city to make more crowded. Thus, a good urban planning is necessary.  An urban planning cannot be separated from mass transportation system. City terminal is one of transportation infrastructures that serves mass transport on a local/city scale. City terminal is built by nodes of people activities such as schools, markets, residential areas, offices, etc. The principle of planning on land transport network system is to connect the system of city activities optimally according to the Masterplan of Transportation network. The purpose of this paper is to design a city terminal that can accommodate people movements and activities as well as can decrease the rate of personal vehicles uses by persuading people to use public transportation. City Terminal which was developed in the first nodes of people movements aims to break and cope up the density with functional approaches such as park and ride system. This paper explains how a city terminal could decrease a number of vehicle’s density by using park and ride concept in a residential area where is a start and end point of the system transport network. Park & ride is the type of terminal where the passengers’ personal vehicles can park and continue their journey by using public transportation instead. The paper ends by designing a park and ride city terminal located in Antapani, Bandung.
