Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine head, chest dan abdominal circumferences as measurements for predicting gestational age of the newborn infant.During the period of August 1989 to December 1990, 1033 newborns with known gestational age were studied. Anthropometric measurements were done in the first two hours after birth, using measuring tapes by two examiners.High correlations were found between head, chest and abdominal circumferences with gestational age, and the linear aquations were Y= 0,075 X + 14,310 (Coefficient of Correlation/r = 0,72); Y= 0,066 X + 18,33 (r = 0,71) and Y= 0,056 X + 22,34 (r = 0,67) respectively. Further analysis by multiple regression revealed that gestational age (in weeks) as function of head, chest and abdominal circumferences (in millimeter) was Y= 0,036 X1 + 0,023 X2 + 0,020 X3 + 13,699.Measurements of head, chest and abdominal circumferences in the first two hours after birth can be used for estimating gestational age in the newborn infant.Key Words: head circumference - trunk circumference - abdominal circumference - gestational age - newborns

Abstract

The author defines medicine as efforts to understand, maintain and manage health condition of human beings, as individuals as well as members of a society, in a biosocial matrix. Thus, three sets of disciplines are involved, i. e. the basic medical sciences, the clinical medical sciences and the social medical sciences.Besides, four aspects of medicine should be taken into consideration, namely medicine as science, technology, art and craft. Also, attention should be paid to the fact that diseases and medical interventions could occur at any level of the I :ing system, each having its own charac• teristics, and with emergents appearing in cross:level surveys. The unavoidable subspecialization in modern medicine should be balanced by transdisciplinary communication and interdisciplinary efforts, and by holistic approach to health problems utilizing the biosociomedical concept of health. Four tracts of study are suggested in medical education, i. e. population medicine, surgical sciences, medical sciences, and basic medical sciences. In conjunction with these steps early compartmentalization in the senior high school curriculum should be avoided.Key Word:: medical education - scientific medicine - living systems - concepts of disease - medical specialization

Abstract

In traumatic cataract extraction it is often difficult to assess the result of the operation and the recovery of the visual acuity because there are many complications and recurrence of the previous uveitis. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the visual function improvement and many influencing factors after extraction of traumatic cataract with intraocular lens implantations in children.Eleven cases of posterior chamber intraocular lens implantations in cataract traumatic children were reported in Dr Sardjito General Hospital between 1990 and 1995.There were 10 boys and 1 girl. The mean age was 8 years ranging from 3 years to 14 years. The visual acuity improvement occurred in 10 cases and in 1 case the visual acuity remained stable. Five cases had post traumatic uveitis that reccurred after cataract extractions and IOL implantation and 1 patient showed retinal cicatrization identified after the operation.Key words: traumatic cataract - traumatic uveitis - intra ocular lens implantation - retinal cicatrization - visual acuity recovery

Abstract

Abstract

Atrial fibrillation is very rare in children. Two children are described, although both were initially in congestive heart failure due to active carditis and were difficult to manage, but all have completely recovered. In addition to digitalis therapy all cases had quinidine, with therapeutic goal of controlling the heart rate rather than abolishing the fibrillation. One case died at home, 12 days after discharge from hospital and one recovered from fibrillation until now.Mitral and tricuspidal an nuloplasty have been performed to the second case, and the result is very satisfactory.Key Wards: atrial fibrillation — rheumatic hear t diseases — rheumatic fever— congestive heart failure — quinidine therapy

Abstract

Abstract

Sebelas penderita dengan anti-HCV negatit drop-out selama 6 bulan follow-up.

Abstract

Mendelian disorders are genetic diseases caused by a mutant gene or a pair of mutant genes, either dominant or recessive, located in the autosomal or sex-chromosomes.The exact location of several genes in the chromosomes has been established by various rnethods. According to The Edinburgh Conference 1979 the location of 260 genes in the chromosomes has been identified.Based on the nature of the mutant genes (dominant or recessive) and the location of the mutant genes (in the autosomes or sex-chromosomes), Mendelian disorders may be transmitted by:a.autosomal dominant,b.autosomal recessive,c.X-linked dominant,d.X-linked recessive, ande. Y-linked mode of inheritance.Retinoblastoma, macular corneal dystrophies and color blindness are the examples of Mendelian disorders in ophthalmogenetics transmitted by autosomal dominant, autosomal recessive and X-linked recessive mode of inheritance respectively. In addition, a list of other Mendelian disorders affecting the eye have been presented.Key Words: Mendelian disorders - mutant genes - gene location - sex-linked mutant ophthalmogenetics
