Abstract

This article describes the principles of nuclear power, the nature of the atomic bomb and its impact on the environment, including the climate and the resulting nuclear winter. The author also points out the effects of nuclear radiation to the living organisms, both immediate and delayed. In conclusion he emphasizes the importance of immediate cessation of nuclear tests, in the atmosphere, on the surface, submarine as well as underground, because otherwise kis bound to increase radioactivityin the environ men t which endangers future generations, even in countries which are not involved in nuclear testing.Key Words: nuclear explosion-nuclear physics- nuclear winter -radioactive fall-out-medical effects of nuclear war

Abstract

Zingiber officinale, Rosa is a well known plant which can be used for the treatment of various diseases, and has been reported as an effective medicinal plant against Dirofilaria immitis in animal. The volatile oil and the pungent of Zingiber officinale, Rosa have been effectively used against larvae stage 3 (L3) B. malayi in vitro study. This study was designed to investigate the effect of the volatile oil and the pungent of Zingiber officinale, Rosc. against microfilariae B. malayi in Fells catus, L..Antifilarial activity of the pungent compound (isolate 1) and the volatile oil were assayed in vivo. The results showed that the volatile oil had the most quantity (rendement 0,5 %) and its activity against microfilariae B. malayi was higher than that of isolate 1, but lower than that of the dietylacarbamasine drug.Key words: microfilariae - volatile oil - the pungent of medicinal plant - B. malayi - Felis caws L

Abstract

Abstract

The objective of this study is to provide evidence on whether the subfomical organ is a neuroendocrine gland, by which the neurosecretion process to be carried out in this organ. This investigation involved the use of light microscopy by using an immunohistochemistry as well as histochemistry methods and transmission electron microscopy. Eighty adult male and female albino rats of the Lembaga Makanan Rakyat strain (Jakarta) weighing between 150-250 g, and 9 rats of Wistar strain, weighing between 200-300 g, were studied.According to morphology and by using immunohistochemistry and histochemistry methods, the results revealed that the subfomical organ was not a neuroendocrine gland that secreted a neurohormone or neurosecretory substances through a neurosecretion process.Key Words: subfomical organ-neurosecretion process - transmission electron microscopy - inununohistochemistry technics - histochemistry technics.

Abstract

Controversies in adequate nutrition for premature infants still exist. No single anthropometric or biochemical measures currently available are reliable for premature nutritional assessment. The aim of this study is to determine the usefulness of serial prealbumin serum levels in identifying adequacy of nutritional intake in premature infants during their neonatal period. A group of 18 infants ranging in birthweight between 1030-2050 g, nursed in the Dr. Sardjito Hospital until one month of age were included for study. Breast and formula milk were given in increasing amount and depending upon acceptance 120 Cal/kg of body weight/day should be achieved. Peripheral capillary blood samples were obtained for prealbumin examinations (by radial-immunodiffusion method) on the first day and at weekly interval afterwards. The infants were weighed daily and serum albumin was examined on 14 and 28 days of age.It turns out that the mean serum prealbumin in the first day of life was 7.9 ± L8 mg% and a significant increment levels on weekly measurements were obtained. It is shown that no correlation was found.between the prealbumin and albumin levels. Body weights correlated poorly with serial prealbumin values. It seems that prealbumin, with a short half-life of 1.9 days can be used as a sensitive nutritional assessment in premature infants. Modifying of adequate protein and caloric provision could be applied early to prevent malnutrition in the neonatal period of premature infants.Key Words: prealbumin - serum albumin - premature infants - nutritional assessment - caloric requirement

Abstract

Background : Glycosilation is a reaction between protein and glucose in high concentration. The basic of this reaction is the continuous increase of glucose concentration, followed by a hooking between glucose with the amin primary structure of the protein. Beside form the AGEs, glycosilation reaction forms free radicals as the side product. The free radical reaction with the protein forms a crosslinking of the protein and then change the structure of the protein. Objectives : This research was carried out to know glycosilation reaction model and the role of madagascar periwinkle ICatharanthus roseus ELI G. Don) s leaves infusion as protein damage inhibitor. Method : This research is an experimental and explorative research. This research was carried out in two steps, the making of infusion and the test for protein damage inhibition by using the infusion of madagascar periwinkle s leaves and glyclazide.Result : The activity of madagascar periwinkles leaves infusion to inhibit the protein damage is 21,29% while the activity of glyclazide is 96,77%.Conclusion : The infusion of madagascar periwinkle (Caiharanihus roseus EL.] G. Don)s leaves can inhibit the protein damage because of the glycosilation reaction but lower than the glyclazides.Key words : Madagascar periwinkle - glycosilation - free radical - protein damage

Abstract

Non-ionic (Iopamiro) and ionic (Urografin 76%) contrast media were used for intravenous urographic examination. Three patients (6%) showed symptoms of side effect in ionic group; two of them without allergy history, but only one patient had an experience of allergy to shrimp, penicillin and dust. The symptoms of reaction were chills, dizziness and febris. There was no reaction in non-ionic group patients. The density of contrast media was superior in using Iopamiro.Key Words : intravenous urography - Iopamiro - Urografin 76% - allergy - radiology

Abstract

Vitamin B12 is an essential factor for DNA synthesis, and it is also needed in the reaction for the production of lipoprotein in myelin sheaths of the nerve system. It is known that vitamin B12 deficiency causes.among others disturbances in the nucleus formation and leads to megaloblastic anemias, with or without disturbances of the peripheral nerve system. Disturbances in the nucleus formation affect cells of tissues which have a relatively rapid turnover such as hemopoiedc precursors in the bone marrow and the mucosal epithelium of the gastrointestinal tract. As the importance of the role of the vitamin in the formation and the development of cells and as the deficiency of the vitamin may initiate a vicious circle which aggravates more and more the deficiency and the defect of the gastrointestinal mucosa, it is very important to cut the circle with, for example, a high dose of parentera I vitamin B12 with sufficient quantity and quality of food.Key Words: gastric intrinsic factor - methylcobalamin - hydroxocobalamin megaloblastic - anemia - vitamin B12
