Abstract

Misuse of antibiotics has been discovered in shrimp exported from Indonesia, one of them is chloramphenicol, therefore it is necessary to develop methods for chloramphenicol detection. In this study, the chemical sensor for chloramphenicol detection has been developed. The sensor developed by immobilized bovine serum albumin (BSA) onto cellulose acetate membrane. The sensor has linear range of 6-16 μg/ml chloramphenicol with r 0.999 and limit of detection (LOD)-limit of quantification (LOQ) value of 0.74-2.21 μg/ml. The RSD value of repeatability and intermediet precision were 2.41% and 2.31%, where the recovery was 100.29%. Three of the five samples of tiger shrimp on the market containing chloramphenicol at level of 1.03; 2.48; and 3 μg/ml. The result also shown in good agreement with conventional spectrophotometry UV-Vis method. Keywords: shrimp, chloramphenicol, BSA, cellulose acetate

Abstract

Diagnosis of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) can be established through transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS), a noninvasive supportive examination which measure prostate volume (PV), and intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP). The severity of obstructive symptoms experienced by the patient was assessed by international prostate symptom score (IPSS) questionnaire. This study aimed to analyse the relationship between both PV and IPP and IPSS in BPH patients. This was an observational analytic study with cross sectional design conducted at Department of Urology Surgery Bina Sehat Hospital Jember, Paru Hospital Jember and Bhayangkara Hospital Bondowoso during October-November 2016 in 30 respondents. The average of PV was 52.01±25.18 mL, IPP was 12.67±6.69 mm and IPSS score was 25.60±9.20. The results of Spearman correlation between the PV and Voiding-IPSS, Storage-IPSS, or total score IPSS and IPP and Voiding IPSS showed no significant correlation (p =0.319; p=0.067; p=0.085; p=0.183). Spearman correlation between the IPP and Storage-IPSS or total score IPSS resulted p value equal to 0.012 and r=0.451 and p=0.027 and r=0.404, which showed a significant correlation with moderate correlation strength. Statistically, IPP correlated to IPSS score better than PV. Keywords: BPH, international prostate symptom score, transabdominal ultrasonography

Abstract

Metformin hydrochloride (MH) has been used as first line for type 2 diabetes mellitus treatment. However, it has relatively low bioavailability, short half-life and could cause gastrointestinal side effects, therefore it is appropriately prepared as microspheres. Microspheres is micro particle which is between 1-1,000 µm in size. Many factors affected the result of microspheres preparation, such as surfactant concentration and stirring time. This research was aimed to find the best composition of span 80 concentration and stirring time to produce MH-chitosan (CH) microspheres with the highest entrapment efficiency (EE) using factorial design optimization. MH was used as active substance, CH as polymer, span 80 as surfactant and non-aqueous solvent evaporation method was chosen for microspheres preparation technique. The optimized formula 2 % span 80 and 2 hours stirring time gained 86.803 ± 0.544 % EE, 24.571 ± 0.157 % drug loading, and 88.220 ± 0.137 % yield. The microspheres had a relatively smooth, bright surface, and spherical structure. The average particle’s size was 161.2 ± 1.743 μm. FTIR analysis indicated that there were no changes in the spesific functional clusters of MH as an active substance. Keywords: metfomin-hydrocloride-chitosan microspheres, non-aquoeous solvent evaporation, factorial design, span 80 concentration, stirring time.
