Abstract

This article discusses the extent to which pesantren in a rural area finances its activities and operates social programs by revitalizing Islamic philantropic scheme. By way of a case study in a village at Kulonprogo District-Yogyakarta, where a small Muhammadiyah pesantren, which is Darul ‘Ulum, has been operating since the 1930s, this article suggests that the ability of this pesantren in engaging the villagers in religious and social activities has made this pesantren survives until now. Unlike other pesantrens, notably in urban areas, pesantren Darul ‘Ulum functions as an educational institution that provides an opportunity to thus students coming from low-income households, including orphanages to study. This paper asks to what extent a small pesantren in a rural area can resolve its budget constrains, how community supports and the culture of giving can, or cannot, underpine pesantren’s social and educational activities, and what sort of challenges for this pesantren to incease its institutional capacity? Abstract

Franz von Benda-Beckmann is a famous figure in the field of legal pluralism. He is one among scholars who propose to understand the plurality of norms in a society. Among his many works, those on Minangkabau are well-known in the study of Anthropology of Law (Rechtsethnologie). This article attempts to analyse his ideas in a book entitled Property in Social Continuity: Continuity and Change in the Maintenance of Property Relationships through Time in Minangkabau, West Sumatra published in 1979. It has its relevance in the seminar Anthropology of Islamic Law, especially when the book talked about the pluralistic situation of laws in Minangkabau on problems of property and inheritance. Because the book is predominantly about Minangkabau adat, the author focuses on adat’s relation with Islamic law and more specifically on the problem of inheritance which has been a source of much “competition” between both systems to regulate the society. Abstract

The author discusses the nature of the Tablihi Jamaat, an India-based Islamic movement which in the past decades has witnessed organizational transformation by becoming the transnational Islamic movement active in many parts of the world. The author pays attention to the characteristic of religious ideology of the organizational pattern of Tablighi Jamaat. He argues that a strong organizational commitment and voluntarism among the members of the Tablighi Jamaat have had a profound impact on the enduring Tablighi Jamaat activities. Yet, ideologically, unlike other Islamic movements such as Ikhwanul Muslimin or Hizbut Tahrir whose ideological foundations are nurtured through written communication and speech based-congregational preaching, the Tablighi Jamaat has utilized direct and personal approach in delivering the messages of Islam to the communities. Keywords: Tablighi Jamaat, religious Ideology, transnational organization, the Islamic movement.

Abstract

Since its inception in 1990, Asian Muslim Action Network (AMAN) was an endeavor to bring and link all Muslim and non Muslim as well, both individual and groups, in Asia to respond and meet the challenges faced by the community in the region. As a Muslim organization, AMAN bases itself on fundamental Islamic teachings based on the Quran and intra and inter-faith element has been essential in AMAN’s activities for the past 20 years. With this paper, the author examines AMAN’s experience on 3 issues. First, the importance of Islam through its faith based organization to look and work for peace of all mankind. In this part, Islam ‘seems’ universal for peace. Second, meaning of peace. There can be different faces of peace depending on the context we face. Thus, question of ‘what is peace’ needs a modification to be “what does it mean to be Peaceful?” Lastly, the challenges for faith based organization to set up inter-faith cooperation in working toward the mutually desired situation that enables peace to foster. Keywords: faith based organization, peace, conflict, inter-faith cooperation.

Abstract

This paper explores the shift in the da’wah concept taking place in the coastal area of Java by examining two manuscripts written by two notable figures in the 19th and 20th centuries, Kiai Saleh Darat from Semarang and Kiai Bisri Musthofa from Rembang. These two Islamic scholars are prolific writers and have penned a number of works in Arab- Pegon. Their writings have become references for Islamic students (santri) studying in traditional educational institutions in coastal areas of Java over decades. This paper attempts to answer the following questions: how the dakwah concept is conceived in the Kyai Saleh Darat’s and Kiai Bisri Musthfa’s works? How do their strategies in dakwah and the implementation shari’a influence the views of Islamic students and scholars in the coastal areas of Java? Why do we have to see coastal areas of Java as an instrument? From the narratives of Islamic historiography in Southeast Asia, coastal area of Java has an important position because it has become a node of the Islamic scholar networks. By utilizing the genealogical concept, this paper traces the roots and intellectual origin of the Javanese Islamic scholarship. Keywords: Java coastal areas, discourse production, da’wah, Islamic scholars, kiai Saleh Darat, kiai Bisri Musthofa.

Abstract

Quranic exegesis has a special place in the development of Islamic intellectual tradition and civilization at large. As the main source of Islamic teaching, for centuries Muslims have attempted to understand the various meanings of the Qur’an in order to be in line with the current needs of the society through the process of contextualization. In this article, the author presents and explains the way in which Abdullah Saeed, a professor in Islamic studies from the the University of Melbourne, Australia, contextualize the meaning of the Quran. In particular, this article analyzes some methodological aspects proposed by Saeed in the qontextualization of the Qur’an: 1) identifying the world of the text; 2) analyzing text critically; 3) connecting the text to the early Islamic community as the first receivers; and 4) relating the text to the current needs of society. Keywords: Quranic exegesis, Abdullah Saeed, tafsir methodology, contextualization.

Abstract

This article is derived from a fieldwork carried out in Muara Lingkat, Kerinci- Jambi. The people of Kerinci are ethnically classified as Malay sub-ethnic. Like other Malay people in Sumatra, the people of Kerinci incorporate the religion of Islam or Islamic Shari’a into their customary norms (adat). Customary norms have for centuries played pivotal roles in governing the communities in Muara Lingkat. Yet, the role of customary norms gradually decline in line with the rise of formal institutions in modern society. By analyzing some cases discovered in the field, such as communal conflicts, disputes in the communities, tensions within family members, and the like, the author assumes that that the roles of customary norms become increasingly marginalized and consequently, the role of religion in resolving the problems of the communities decreases. In order to revitalize the roles of customary laws in resolving the problems that the communities in Muara Lingkat face, the author proposes some steps: exploring and reformulating the essence of local customary norms; strengthening local adat institutions; and providing assistance for the communities in establishing adat institutions. Keywords: Islamic dakwah, customary norms, social harmony, kerinci.

Abstract

Western scholars on Sufism so far have paid more attention to Sufi figures that left us with many written works, either in the form of poems, biography, apologia, or mystical treatise. Practically, al-Jilani only left us with three original works, wherein we do not find any ‘brilliant theory’ about Sufism. So, at the face value, this Western academic indifference about al-Jilani is just plainly plausible. Al-Jilani’s marginal position in the Western academic studies on Sufism in fact is an indication of a subtler ideological bias among many scholars. This article examines the life and works of al-Jilani while proposing a new theoretical basis in the study of Sufism. The writer argues that al-Jilani’s teaching is popular Sufism by definition Keywords: al-Jilani, spirituality, popular sufism

Abstract

This article examines the fatwas of the MUI (Indonesian Ulama Cuncil) on the recitation of translation during the Prayer. The MUI fatwas were in response to the new trend of reading Indonesian language during prayer among Indonesian Muslims. In Islam, the practice of worship (praying) has been regulated by and based on the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad Saw. Debates over the issues whether or not praying can be performed in local language arose when Muhammad Yusman Roy form Surabaya initiated the practice of praying by reciting Bahasa Indonesia instead of Arabic. The author presents different views among classical Islamic scholars (ulama) about the translation of shalat recitation and explains why the MUI has forbid this practice in the Indonesian context. Keywords: prayer, MUI, fatwa, ijtihad, innovation (bid’ah)
