Abstract

This study aims to explain the contestation of Islam in the public sphere. As the majority religion, Islam always presents a debate about the position of Islam in the public sphere which is often misused for political and power interests. This study uses a comparative study between secularization practices in Indonesia and the West. The theory used in this study is Jurgen Habermas’ view of the public sphere, which is an open means of making every citizen a communicative society. This study shows that the contestation of Islam in the public sphere is very hard by following the ideology of a country in placing symbols and Islamic identities in the public sphere. In Indonesian context, restrictions on religious expression cannot be restricted, let alone to be prohibited by the state as the holder of power.

Abstract

This article investigates the role of Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’an (MTA), a dakwah movement operating aminly in Central Java. MTA is known as the Muslim purist movement whose mission focuses on the purification of Islam by utilizing the slogan back to the Qur’an and Sunnah. Using the social movemenet theory, the author analyzes the extent to which MTA uses cultural dakwah or symbolic-cultural mobilization as its dakwah strategy in order to produce counter-interpretation towards the established and hegemonic interpretation of the Javanese culture. Cultural dakwah can mean a bolization process of Javanese symbols by ataching new meaning and interpretation to thos symbols. The author further argues that even though the MTA’s dakwah movement is mainly characterized by confontative attitudes, the MATA has also shown its acomodative character by introducing new new understanding and meaning of the existing cultural symbols. Keywords: Majelis Tafsir Al-Qur’an (MTA), Islamic dakwah movement, symbolic-cultural mobilization.

Abstract

This article examines the dynamics of Muslim understanding of Hadith (Islamic tradition) by exploring the views of Islamic associations in Indonesia. It addresses questions such as a) how is hadith understood by a limited number of ulama (Islamic scholars) and in turn their understanding of hadith become a determinant factor in shaping organizational ideology; b) what is the consequence of the status of a hadith determined by ulama to the dynamics of a collective ijtihad within the organization. The author uses historical and sociological approach in understanding Indonesian Muslim views by paying attention particularly to the Muhammadiyah. This article concludes that the status of a hadith in the Muhammadiyah is determined through collective ijtihad (jama’i); b) the process of authentication and verification of hadith collectively has had a profound impact on the dynamics of Muslim discourse among the members of the Muhammadiyah, and as a result, a structural approach by the members of the Muhammadiyah has sidelined the dynamics of Muslim discourse in the grassroots level. Keywords: Hadith, Muhammadiyah, Ulama (Islamic Scholars), ijtihad,

Abstract

This paper discusses the debates behind the formulation of Sharia regulation in Tasikmalaya. This paper argues that the initiators of Sharia regulation in Tasikmalaya are coming from mainstream islamic organizations such as Muhammadiyah, Nahdlatul Ulama or Persis, but social organizations or non- mainstream islamic groups, such as Hizb ut-Tahrir Indonesia (HTI), Front de- fenders of Islam (FPI) and Laskar Thaliban, including PKPPSI and the Indone- sian Ulema Council (MUI). This debate is seen in the perspective of the relation- ship between Islam and the state. There are at least four important topics exam- ined in this paper: the linkages between Shariah regulation and islamophobia, resistance and acceptance of Sharia regulation, the relationship between notion of Shariah and political party ideology, and Sharia regulation as a product of democracy. This paper also agues that two largest Muslim organizations, Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama, both in position as jam’iyah and jamaah, less contributed to the debate of Shariah regulation in Tasikmalaya.

Abstract

This article discusses the life, struggle, and personality of Abdul Kahar Muzakki in 2019 was appointed as a National Hero. This study is based on the fact that information and studies on figures who play essential roles and contributions in the journey of the Indonesian nation are minimal. As a result, it is not uncommon for people to mistake and confuse him with another figure, Abdul Kahar Muzakkar, who is a DI/TII figure. Therefore, the article adapted from a scientific lecture was translated and presented again for today's audience. The first discussion focused on the early formative period of Abdul Kahar Muzakkir and his work in the world of education and national politics. Then, this article discusses Abdul Kahar Muzakkir's position and role in the dynamics of the Islamist movement and political exemplary at the local and national level. By seeing his example in attitude, religion, and politics, the writer can even refute the views of Harry J. Benda and Clifford Geertz who argued that Indonesian politics is based on contestation between priyayi, secular, and Islam (H.J. Benda) or exclusive politics (C.J. Geertz). Abdul Kahar Muzakkir's personality and political role show that politics is also a battle between authorities and ordinary folks where Islam acts as a source of inspiration and moral aspirations for people to realize a just and prosperous society.

Abstract

Franz von Benda-Beckmann is a famous figure in the field of legal pluralism. He is one among scholars who propose to understand the plurality of norms in a society. Among his many works, those on Minangkabau are well-known in the study of Anthropology of Law (Rechtsethnologie). This article attempts to analyse his ideas in a book entitled Property in Social Continuity: Continuity and Change in the Maintenance of Property Relationships through Time in Minangkabau, West Sumatra published in 1979. It has its relevance in the seminar Anthropology of Islamic Law, especially when the book talked about the pluralistic situation of laws in Minangkabau on problems of property and inheritance. Because the book is predominantly about Minangkabau adat, the author focuses on adat’s relation with Islamic law and more specifically on the problem of inheritance which has been a source of much “competition” between both systems to regulate the society. Abstract

This paper explores the shift in the da’wah concept taking place in the coastal area of Java by examining two manuscripts written by two notable figures in the 19th and 20th centuries, Kiai Saleh Darat from Semarang and Kiai Bisri Musthofa from Rembang. These two Islamic scholars are prolific writers and have penned a number of works in Arab- Pegon. Their writings have become references for Islamic students (santri) studying in traditional educational institutions in coastal areas of Java over decades. This paper attempts to answer the following questions: how the dakwah concept is conceived in the Kyai Saleh Darat’s and Kiai Bisri Musthfa’s works? How do their strategies in dakwah and the implementation shari’a influence the views of Islamic students and scholars in the coastal areas of Java? Why do we have to see coastal areas of Java as an instrument? From the narratives of Islamic historiography in Southeast Asia, coastal area of Java has an important position because it has become a node of the Islamic scholar networks. By utilizing the genealogical concept, this paper traces the roots and intellectual origin of the Javanese Islamic scholarship. Keywords: Java coastal areas, discourse production, da’wah, Islamic scholars, kiai Saleh Darat, kiai Bisri Musthofa.
