Abstract

In the journey of the feminist movement, many efforts have been made to save marginalized women from patriarchy. Betty Friedan, an American feminist writer, reveals the controversial phenomenon of the concept of feminine mystique which restrains women from seeking their true selves due to oppression from various parties. In its practice, this phenomenon occurs in the Hollywood film industry, which is supposed to be an industry uncontaminated by gender discrimination. This study aims to investigate the issue of women's marginalization in Taylor Jenkins Reid’s The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by implementing Betty Friedan’s theory of feminine mystique. Valid data were collected through qualitative research methods by quoting narrations and dialogues from the characters in the novel. Furthermore, the data is processed and analyzed based on the theory used. This study presents the forms of Evelyn's marginalization in three areas: domestic, Hollywood film industry, and public and media. In the end, Evelyn Hugo's rejection of gender oppression in those three areas makes her able to escape from women’s marginalization and become a successful female icon in the Hollywood film industry.

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effectiveness of using a genre-based approach as a learning method in teaching and improving students' writing skills. This study uses a quantitative method, using pre-test and post-tests as data collection techniques. The subjects of this research were the eighth graders of SMP Dharma Lestari, Salatiga. The results obtained were that the average score of students on the pre-test was 71.44, while the average score of students on the post-test was 76.04. This shows an increase in students' ability to learn to write by as much as 6.4%. Research has shown that the genre-based approach can be effective in improving students' writing skills, particularly in terms of organization, coherence, and clarity. By focusing on the features of different genres, students can learn how to use language to achieve specific goals and how to adapt their writing to different contexts and audiences. Therefore, it can be concluded that the genre-based approach is an effective method for teaching and improving students' writing skills.

Abstract

Along with Mandarin, which has become the second international language, learning Mandarin is increasingly considered very important. However, this trend has not run optimally in Cirebon; since the COVID-19 pandemic, several schools have eliminated Mandarin lessons. Apart from the lack of teaching staff for Mandarin in Cirebon, this condition is also caused by several problems in learning Mandarin in schools, one of which is learning Han characters. This research analyzes how Han characters are taught in a high school in Cirebon City and uses a qualitative descriptive approach with data collection techniques like observation, questionnaires, and quizzes. This study aims to solve the problem of learning Han characters and encourage the development of Mandarin language learning in Indonesia, especially in Cirebon. The study found that teaching staff, learning methods, and materials were the main problems in learning Han characters at the research location. The implications of the results of this study can be used as a reference for stakeholders, such as schools and the government, to pay attention to the quality of Mandarin language learning, especially in providing quality teaching staff and using appropriate learning methods and materials.

Abstract

The rapid growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) in education affected how teachers design teaching scenarios. In speaking classrooms, EFL students face multifaceted dilemmas such as speaking anxiety, lack of vocabulary, and fluency in transferring from L1 to L1. Therefore, digital pedagogy in 21-st century learning demands lifelong learning for students to become active and critical speakers in global communication. This quantitative used a quasi-experimental design involving experiment and control groups to investigate the effect of using BBC Learning English Podcast (BBC LEP) on students' speaking performance. 40 EFL students in a private university in Indonesia were involved in this study. The treatment for the experiment group used BBC LEP to teach speaking, which focused on students' authentic performance in reviewing the news from English podcasts. The data were collected through Pretest and Posttest scores to investigate the significance of the treatment on students' performance. The researchers did normality, homogeneity, and a paired-sample test using SPSS version 25 to analyze the data. The result of the pretest and posttest indicated that teaching speaking using BBC LEP had a significant effect on improving students' speaking skills. Additionally, the study has positive pedagogical impacts for EFL teachers and further researchers who want to conduct teaching speaking by referring to the appropriate treatments linked to the use of English podcasts as the material and media. Keywords: Speaking proficiency; BBC learning English podcast; Internet of things; Digital pedagogy

Abstract

This research is a Beauvoirian existential feminist study applied to the novel Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. More specifically, the study on Emma focused on her goal of achieving eudaimonia or happiness. By applying the qualitative narrative method, this study focuses specifically on the characters' existence and life experiences to achieve eudaimonic conditions as they are without being weighed down in the form of normative judgments. This study contains novelty and significance because the focus on existential choices to pursue the eudaimonic conditions has not been widely applied to literary works, which will vary the situational experience and setting. As a result, the elusive eudaimonic state remains unattainable by such existential choices that do not include responsibility.

Abstract

Aceh has a unique and distinct cultural heritage as one of the ethnic groups in Indonesia. This study attempts to analyze the functions and meanings of signs and symbols in Aceh Houses (Rumoh Aceh) using the triangle theory proposed by Peirce. The research method used in this study involves interpreting field and literature data obtained. The interpretation process is based on local references derived from the social and cultural values prevalent in Acehnese society. Data is collected through documentation and several previous scientific publications. The data is then analyzed using a Peircean semiotic approach. The research findings indicate that the signs present in Rumoh Aceh are closely related to religious elements, positioned in buildings oriented from east to west (facing the qibla), rooms divided into three spaces serving as private and non-private areas, and demarcating spaces between men and women. The architectural design and elevation of the building from the ground carry the meaning of protection from natural elements such as wild animals and floods. Ornamental motifs of flora and fauna are employed to preserve nature and coexist with living creatures, both animals and plants. Religious motifs aim to remember and draw closer to the divine. A variety of colors symbolize the characteristics and culture of Acehnese society. The use of various carved motifs signifies the homeowner's social strata.
