Abstract

Abstract: This paper aims to provide an overview of the concept of masculinity in Japanese society today which is represented by the main character in “Perfect World” film. The concept of masculinity here is limited to the masculinity of the male main character with a disability, considering that people with disabilities are often seen and treated as second-class citizens by the surrounding community. The method used is the semiotic method of Barthes, because it not only provides an interpretation of a sign into language, but also sees signs from the ideological side of a culture. Furthermore, Chafetz's concept of masculinity is also used as a reference for assessing the masculinity of the main character. As a result, it was found that a man with disability can still be said to be masculine, whether in traditional or modern concepts. In addition, it can be said that the impermanence of the concept of masculinity is greatly influenced by time and the supporting society in which the concept was born. Men with disabilities can still be said to be masculine, as long as most of his masculinity assessment points are still fulfilled. On the other hand, a man without physical limitations can be said to be non-masculine if he cannot meet his masculinity assessment points. Keywords: gender, semiotics, masculinity, difabel, Barthes

Abstract

The people of South Central Timor District In East  Nusa Tenggara  are “archaic” people or traditional people who still maintain their life with local cultural patterns from the legacy of their ancestors. In South Central Timor District, to be precised in Biloto Village, there is a traditional ritual which is a ritual that is cultured for the bride. A bride from any clan and from any tribe is married to one of the Timorese men or atoin meto,  she is obliged to follow this Kasnono ritual. If the bride doesn't perform the ritual, then all the bad things will overflow the bride and her new family. This study aims to examine the gender perspective contained in Kasnono's traditional speech and ritual stages. The methods used in studying the data is descriptive qualitative method that used interviews and observation. The method of observation is carried out with the aim of obtaining a complete picture of the data regarding real verbal and nonverbal behavior regarding the continuity of the ritual. Meanwhile, based on the results of observations and interviews, although at a glance this ritual is burdensome for women or wives in their married life, the data proved that the women are the core of their household, whose positions are equal to men, that their roles and existence are highly respected and upheld. In the tradition of Biloto village, a granary is a place of honor for all parts of the Timorese community in the village of Biloto. Therefore, by implementing this ritual the wives hold the key to the family's granary, whereas the husband and the other family members are not allowed to enter the barn.. Finally by carrying out the Kasnono traditional ritual, the wife officially becomes the main control to manage everything in the family house and the wife’s position is equal to her husband..

Abstract

This paper aims to identify strategies for translating self-names (proper nouns) and ideological tendencies in translation works. The data sources used were the translated novel entitled Binatangisme (translated by Mahbub Djunaidi) as the source text and the English novel entitled Animal Farm by George Orwell as the source text. This research used the theory designed by Davies (2003) to identify translation strategies and ideological tendencies. According to Davies, there are seven translation strategies, namely preservation, addition, localization, omission, globalization, transformation and creation. The result obtained is that the translated version tends to domestication ideology. Of the 15 data analyzed, Mahbub Djunaidi's translated version has 46.67% tendencies of domestication ideology and 40% tendencies of foreignization ideology (the number is not 100% because some data using omission are considered neutral and not counted).

In analyzing the data, the structural approach was used to scrutinize the intrinsic elements such as character, conflict, setting, and plot, while the psychological approach was used to examine extrinsic elements such as anxiety and motive of Amir as the main character in “The Kite Runner”. The results show that Amir, as the main character, is a caring, inferior, coward, optimistic, anxious, selfish, careless, sly, and patient person. It also indicates that Amir is a round static character since he has complex traits but his character as a caring person remains the same from the beginning to the end of the story. Besides, as the main character, Amir experienced both internal and external conflicts. The settings of time, social, and place showed the period in Afghanistan between 1975 and 2001 and the social stratum, Pashtun and Hazara in Kabul.  Dealing with the plot, it starts from Amir’s effort to get Baba’s recognition and respect, Amir’s anxiety after betraying Hassan, Amir efforts to take Sohrab out from Kabul, the liberation of Sohrab from Assef, the Sohrab suicide trial, up to Amir’s effort to get back Sohrab trust. Also, Amir’s anxiety deals with realistic, neurotic, and moral anxiety, while the motives are safety and security need, belongingness and love need, and self-esteem needs.

Abstract

Scientific writing like abstract demands perfect grammar writing in academic language. A common error usually is the use of an automated translator such as Google Translate to translate abstracts from Indonesian to English. The translation produced needs to be polished again to avoid mistakes in the grammar itself. The objective of this research is to find the type of grammatical error in English abstracts published in Jurnal Ilmiah Ekonomi Islam (JIEI) journal in 2020 both English and Indonesian. This research uses descriptive qualitative. The result of the study shows that three types of grammatical errors found in English abstracts in the JIEI journal are misinformation, omission, and addition. In misinformation error, there are 98 data or 44.5 %. In omission error, there are 69 data or 31.36 %. In addition to error, there are 53 data or 24.09 %. In misinformation, several errors were found in the use of part of speech such as article/determiner, the preposition, verb (subject-verb agreement), noun (singular-plural), and pronoun. In omission, several errors were found in the omission of part of speech such as article ‘a, an, the’, preposition ‘on’ and ‘to’. In addition, several errors were found in the addition part of speech such as article/determiner ‘a, an, the”, preposition “of, to, in, on, at”. Abstract

This study aims to reveal the postcolonial issues contained in poetry I, Too by Langston Hughes and Incident by Countee Cullen. Both authors of these poems are figures from black people in America. The method used in this study is the qualitative method and literature study approach with the aim of exploring, describing, and understanding how the hybridity and dominance of whites over blacks in American poetry. The data source of this study is the words and phrases in both poems. The data containing postcolonial: hybridity and mimicry in the poems were characterized and analyzed using Homi K. Bhabha's theory (2007). Bhabha in his thinking tries to provide a "middle space" between the colonizer and the colonized. Bhabha states the concept of a “middle space” as a time-lag. This space is an intercultural space where personal and communal self-defense strategies can be developed. All of these cultural expressions and systems are built in a space called the “third space of enunciation”. Interestingly, the issue of hybridity that occurred a century ago has not completely gone in a better direction. The proof is that at the beginning of the first semester of 2020 there was an incident of violence against blacks by whites which caused a massive demonstration that led to the creation of a movement group called Black Lives Matter. This study uncovers how bad the treatment of white people towards black people is that the position and social stratifications between them are different.
