Abstract

Abstract

Children like to play games with computers. This stimulates teachers and parents to make use of computers to enhance the children’s learning. However, most of the available games are not in line with the school curriculum. Creative teachers usually like to develop suitable teaching materials for their learners. Through this paperwe would share our experience when developing a vocabulary game for elementary school learners although our knowledge about computer programs is limited. This paper talks about the process of developing the game starting from some considerations when preparing and deciding the game, selecting topic, words, until writing short texts so that they are line with the English curriculum of primary schools in Indonesia. Some technical processes using Adobe Flash CS3 are discussed briefly to make it user friendly for young learners. In teaching-learning activity, so many interactions happen in the classroom, for example teacher-students, students-students, etc. Since Intensive Course becomes the foundation of the English Department students, how the interaction should be conducted, especially the verbal interaction should get a high attention. Which form of classroom verbal interactions was most commonly used in IC classes? This research was a classroom ethnographic research applying a nonparticipant observation. The most commonly used form was teacher active, students mainly receptive

Abstract

Listening is a language skill that assists the students to comprehend spoken language. However, listening is often neglected at schools in Indonesia due to the system of school curriculum in which listening to oral English is the skill least taught at school. As a result, listening becomes a difficult language skill for the students, especially vocational school students. There are many factors that students have to cope with in order to comprehend spoken English. To achieve a certain level of listening comprehension, students have to master micro and macro skills as mentioned in Brown’s taxonomy in listening comprehension. This study proved that there were four major factors that hindered students’ ability in listening comprehension: sounds, vocabulary, grammatical awareness and pragmatic differences. It was concluded that the main cause of the students’ inability to comprehend spoken language was micro skills, which happened to the students at low level, especially recognition of word sounds. Accordingly, micro skills should be introduced to enrich students’ knowledge of language.

Abstract

In the last few decades, there have been a lot of undesirable changes in Bahasa Indonesia. The undesirable changes occur through coining new words, borrowing words from other languages, especially English, blending Bahasa Indonesia words and acronymizing words. Bahasa Indonesia users seem to exercise their complete freedom in using language. There is no control in coining words, borrowing words, blending words, and acronymizing words. The loss of control that leads to free will and right to use Bahasa Indonesia has caused Bahasa Indonesia chaos. If the free will and free right are not curbed, there will certainly be greater chaos. System approach teaches that Bahasa Indonesia serves the function as an official language and a national language. This function has to be maintained and preserved. If individuals belonging to Bangsa Indonesia continue to exercise their free will and free right in using Bahasa Indonesia, it can be predicted that Bahasa Indonesia will change from Indonesian Identity to British Identity
