Abstract

Energy efficiency is crucial for radio frequency identification (RFID) systems as the readers are often battery operated. The main source of the energy wastage is the collision which happens when tags access the communication medium at the same time. Thus, an efficient anti-collision protocol could minimize the energy wastage and prolong the lifetime of the RFID systems. In this regard, EPCGlobal-Class1-Generation2 (EPC-C1G2) protocol is currently being used in the commercial RFID readers to provide fast tag identification through efficient collision arbitration using the Q algorithm. However, this protocol requires a lot of control message overheads for its operation. Thus, a reinforcement learning based anti-collision protocol (RL-DFSA) is proposed to provide better time system efficiency while being energy efficient through the minimization of control message overheads. The proposed RL-DFSA was evaluated through extensive simulations and compared with the variants of EPC-Class 1 Generation 2 algorithms that are currently being used in the commercial readers. The results show conclusively that the proposed RL-DFSA performs identically to the very efficient EPC-C1G2 protocol in terms of time system efficiency but readily outperforms the compared protocol in the number of control message overhead required for the operation.

Abstract

We propose a modified OFDM modulation based on multiband scheme for visible light communications (VLC) system. The method called catenated-OFDM VLC system can efficiently boost the propagation distance and combat multipath induced the inter symbol interference and inter carrier interference. Design parameters such as number of optical bands, input power, distance and data rate are varied to see their effect on the system performances. Simulation analysis is done using Optisys software Ver. 11.0. The results show that the proposed system offers a good performance at longer transmission distance of 12 m for input power of 2 dBm in case of Band=3 with 10 Gbps data rate. BER curves also indicates that the proposed system can be operated at very high data rate of 15 Gbps. This exhibits the ability of the proposed system to be one of the candidate for future optical wireless communication system.

Abstract

This paper present the design of a circular patch microstrip antenna with enhancement in terms of bandwidth and gain using a dielectric double negative (DNG) split ring metamaterial radome. This radome is positioned on top of the CP antenna operating from 5.2 GHz to 6.4 GHz. The metamaterial radome comprises of two alternate split rings of negative permittivity, permeability and refractive index. The circular microstrip antenna bandwidth of 430 MHz has been realized by the presence of DNG metamaterial radome compared to 220 MHz without the radome. The gain has been increased as well from 1.84 dBi to 3.87 dBi.

Abstract

As of late, expanding interest of renewable energy and consumption of non-renewable energy source have prompted developing advancement of renewable energy technology, for example, wind energy. Wind energy has turned out to be one of the reliable sources of renewable energy, which requests extra transmission capacity and better methods for sustaining system reliability. As of now, doubly fed induction generator wind turbine is the most well-known wind turbine. This paper focuses on DFIG wind farm design using MATLAB/SIMULINK and also investigates the issues of the system stability of the DFIG wind turbine micro grid power system. This analysis includes the changes of voltage, current, real power and reactive power based on various conditions of the power system.

Abstract

This research work discusses a control strategy to enhance the transient response of the fuel cell and boost the real and reactive power flow from grid connected to fuel cell. The current output of the fuel cell depends on the availability of hydrogen in the fuel cell stack, a battery bank is implemented to supply the transient current and to prevent it from hydrogen saturation. The battery should only supply when there is a transient. During steady state the total power is produced by the fuel cell by regulating its hydrogen input. A prototype of the system will be created to study a control scheme which regulates the current from an input source and a battery which is connected to a dc motor. The control philosophy is based on d-q transformation and subsequently generating a reference signal that is tracked by an IGBT based inverter. The speed of the motor is controlled using pulse with modulation. The dynamic modeling of the standalone fuel cell that is connected to a dc motor is carried out using MATLAB/SIMULINK platform. The simulation results show that the control scheme works well, although the dynamic response of the system can be improved. The testing carried on the prototype proves that the concept works well, but a hydrogen control scheme should be developed to improve the efficiency of the control scheme.

Abstract

The Femto-Macro heterogeneous network is a promising solution to improve the network capacity and coverage in mobile network. However interference may rise due to femtocell deployment nearby to macro user equipment (MUE) within macrocell network coverage. Femtocell offers main priority in resource allocation to its subscribed femto user equipment (FUE) rather than unsubscribed MUE. MUEs will suffer severe interference when they are placed near or within the femtocell area range especially at the cell edge. This phenomenon occurs due to the distance is far from its serving macro base station (MBS) to receive good signal strength. This paper presents a design of cell selection scheme for cell-edge MUE to select an optimal femto base station (FBS) as its primary serving cell in physical resource block allocation. In this study, the proposed cell selection consists of four main elements: measuring the closest FBS distance, Signal to Interference-plus- Noise-Ratio (SINR), physical resource block (PRB) availability and node density level for the selected base station. The main goal is to ensure celledge MUE has priority fairly with FUE in physical resource block allocation per user bandwidth demand to mitigate interference. Hence, the cell-edge MUE has good experienced on receiving an adequate user data rate to improve higher network throughput.

Abstract

This study focuses on mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) that support Internet routing protocol imposing stringent resource consumption constraints of Quality of service (QoS). The mobile Internet causes the ongoing issue of inefficient use of the MANET resources due to its random nature of wireless environments. In this paper, the new improved architecture of the last mile mobile hybrid optical-wireless access network (adLMMHOWAN) is proposed and designed to tackle the arised issues. The proposed design is based on a unified wireless-wired network solution required the deployment of MANET-based wireless fidelity (WiFi) technology at the wireless front-end and wavelengths division multiplexing passive optical network (WDM PON) at the optical backhaul. The critical performance metrics such as network capacity and energy consumption based on modified AODVUU routing protocol using OMNeT++ software is analyzed with 2 scenarios, namely the number of nodes and mobility speed. This mode of communication results in better QoS network capacity of 47.07% improvement, with 26.85% reduction of lower energy resource consumption for mobile wireless front-end over passive optical network backhaul architecture when compared with the existing work of oRiq scheme that focus on improvement in MANETs.

Abstract

The global explosions of the internet and direct use by individuals, organizations and Islamic scholars to spread the knowledge and events have witnessed massive growth over the years. The users refuse to use online Islamic websites as references which causes the acceptance rate of the online learning method still low. This paper presents the identifications of persuasive elements in Islamic knowledge website. The objective of this study is to identify the persuasive element using Kansei Engineering (KE) method for online Islamic knowledge website design. Therefore, Kansei words related to online Islamic knowledge were identified. After that, the Kansei words (KWs) were evaluated in order to be used as persuasive elements. Ten specimens of Islamic websites were chosen and evaluated with 30 emotions of KWs. 38 students from one of the public universities accomplished the evaluation experiment. The gathered KWs were then analyzed using multivariate analysis such as Factor Analysis to identify the persuasive elements. Based on Factor Analysis, the finding of this research revealed four main pillars which are credibility-motivated, reliability, Islamic identity and functional. The two additional pillars are updated and belief. The pillars were then compared with the persuasive elements in the previous research. Although there are some limitations and constraint during the conduct of the research, this study also contributes to the design persuasive elements for Islamic website knowledge in the future.

Abstract

This paper presents an algorithm called Failure-Aware Workflow Scheduling (FAWS). The proposed algorithm discussed in this paper schedules parallel applications on homogeneous systems without sacrificing the two conflicting objectives: reliability and makespan. The proposed algorithm handles unexpected failure causes rescheduling of the failed task to available resources. In order to analyse the performance of the FAWS algorithm, it will be compared with the popular scheduling algorithm namely Heterogeneous Earliest Finish Time (or HEFT) and Critical Path (CP). A simulation-driven analysis based on realistic workflow application was demonstrated using DAG graph as a continuation of the Layered Workflow Scheduling Algorithm (LWFS). The FAWS algorithm aims to minimize the makespan, increases reliability and therefore boosts the performance of the whole system. A workflow generator was developed to generate large task graphs randomly and scheduled the parallel applications. Based on the simulation results, the proposed algorithm has improved the overall workflow scheduling effectiveness in comparison with existing algorithms.

Abstract

The demand for autonomous logistics service robots requires an efficient task scheduling system in order to optimise cost and time for the robot to complete its tasks. This paper presents a Genetic algorithm (GA) based task scheduling system for a ground mobile robot that is able to find a global near-optimal travelling path to complete a logistics task of pick-and-deliver items at various locations. In this study, the chromosome representation and the fitness function of GA is carefully designed to cater for a single load logistics robotic task. Two variants of GA crossover are adopted to enhance the performance of the proposed algorithm. The performance of the scheduling is compared and analysed between the proposed GA algorithms and a conventional greedy algorithm in a virtual map and a real map environments that turns out the proposed GA algorithms outperform the greedy algorithm by 40% to 80% improvement.
