Abstract

Key words: focalization, Gennete, mood, perspektif, Interpreter of Maladies

Abstract

This artile presents Systemic Functional Linguistics as an extension of Prague School in competency-based language learning and literacy education. Unlike  Bloomfield who considers that utterances are element   (-emes) and  Chomsky who considers utterances as rules, the Prague School of Linguistics considers utterances as function (motor). Utterances are means of expressing meanings which, by Halliday, are described in three domains: Ideational, interpersonal and textual. Most educational practitioners have taken up Halliday’s principles in developing competency-based language learning and literacy education. Key words: Prague School, Systemic Functional Linguistics, ompetency-based language learning, literacy education.

Abstract

Novel A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is a serious novel written by Mark Twain which was equal in power to Huckleberry Finn, his masterpiece novel. This research attempts to show sets of values between the old world and the new world. One of the values is “Technology versus Superstition”. The novel focused on Hank Morgan, a Superintendent at the Harford Colt Arms Factory, who tried to in vain to impose his 1880s American mind on the feudal society of Arthurian England in the sixth century. In undertaking study, the theoretical approach is Reception Theory. Reception Theory says the reader takes an active part in the literary process and gives meaning to the work of art itself. However, to prevent the analysis from becoming subjective, The Expressive Theory of Art is applied. The choice is that A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur’s Court is a bitter satirical piece of writing by Twain who, in his declining years, turned more and more pessimistic about American Society. This study is in the hope of allowing the readers to know the grains of truth in this novel and thus broaden our literary vistas. Key words: technology, superstition, the old world (1880s), the new world (17th Century)

Abstract

In this era, becoming bilingual or multilingual is a way of life. Thus, learning a foreign language, which is a complex process, is badly needed. Knowing the principles of language learning will facilitate the language learners to master the second language. There are two pathways to develop competence in a language: language acquisition and language learning. There are several hypotheses about second language acquisition, i.e. the natural order hypothesis, the monitor hypothesis, the input hypothesis, the affective filter hypothesis. In order to be successful in language learning, language learners must have certain characteristics. The personality variables or factors that play great role in the success or failure of language learning are as follows: 1) extroversion and introversion, 2) tolerance of ambiguity, 3) empathy/ego permeability and sensitivity to rejection, 4) cognitive style and field dependence/independence. Key words: language acquisition, language learning, language competence, the monitor hypothesis, the input hypothesis, the affective filter hypothesis, personality variables
