Abstract

Makalah ini mengkaji teks berita kasus Artalita Suryani pada Harian Suara Merdeka dan Meteor berdasarkan teori Fairclough (1992) dalam bukunya  Discourse and Social Change yang menyangkut Intertextuality (intertekstualitas) untuk mengetahui modus dan stategi intertekstualitas yang dipakai kedua harian tersebut. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa baik Harian Suara Merdeka maupun Harian Meteor menggunakan strategi intertekstualitas discourse representation meskipun dengan modus yang berbeda, Suara Merdeka lebih banyak menggunakan embedded intertextuality sedangkan Meteor lebih banyak menggunakan modus mixed intertextuality. Suara Merdeka sesekali menggunakan strategi presupposition sedangkan Meteor fokus pada strategi discourse representation dengan banyak detail fisik subyek kasus. Namun demikian kedua harian tersebut dalam memilih modus dan strategi intertekstualitas bukanlah tanpa dasar yang kuat. Masing-masing harian memiliki ideologi pemberitan sendiri-sendiri sesuai dengan pangsa pasar pembacanya.   Key Words : modus, strategi, intertextuality,

Abstract

Penelitian ini lebih merupakan survei sederhana guna menjajaki preferensi mahasiswa terhadap penggunaan multimedia sebagai tindak lanjut tersedianya LCD viewer dan komputer di setiap kelas FBIB UNISBANK. Data diambil melalui penyebaran angket kepada mahasiswa FBIB yang diambil secara acak dari berbagai angkatan sebanyak 100 orang mahasiswa. Angket berisi seperangkat pilihan jenis software presentasi multi-media hasil olah power point atau lainnya dari mana mahasiswa diminta memilih dengan skala prioritas. Data yang telah terkumpul akan dianalisis dengan model proporsi (prosentase) agar dapat diketahui mayoritas preferensi mahasiswa. Dengan diketahui preferensi mahasiswa pada model pembelajaran dengan multi-media, diharapkan dosen dapat dengan tepat mengembangkan diri sesuai dengan tuntutan mahasiswa sehingga peralatan multi-media yang telah terpasang dapat dimanfaatkan seoptimal mungkin dalam rangka pengembangan E-Learning untuk semua mata kuliah di lingkngan FBIB-UNISBANK Kata kunci: preferensi, perbedaan individu, multi-media, e-learning

Abstract

This study examines the pattern of thematic progression (TP) in the abstracts written by English students of FBIB Unisbank Semarang. Twenty five abstracts are randomly taken from which the sentences are analyzed to show their thematic patterning. The theory proposed by Danes (1974) was used as the framework to analyze the pattern employed in the abstracts and the result of which indicates that the split rheme TP pattern (77%) is realized in the abstracts and theme-derived TP pattern (23%) is also noticed. The study also describes that the link between linguistic thematic progression and the messages is characterized by the use of speech functions (SF) as declarations (33%), representatives (50%) and directives (17%). It is sufficient to say that students display good experience in writing their abstracts but to further justify that the abstracts are standard ones future researchers may conduct similar studies by employing more data and schematic structure analysis on abstracts. Abstract

English is a foreign language for the Indonesian learners. Although they have learned English for years, it is still foreign for them. They still find problems maintaining their conversation. In this article, the writer wants to report the English the students use in oral communication and how they use the communication strategies.The data were obtained by means of recording 3 conversations produced by 7 students  of  UNISBANK  Semarang  during the Speaking IV lesson. The unit of analysis in the current study is  turn. Every turn is observed to find out the communication strategies employed. Then, the reasons for employing the communication strategies are explained by using  Tarone’s theory. The result of the study shows that the communication strategies employed by the English Department students of UNISBANK in speaking English are: translation strategy: language switch strategy, word coinage strategy, appeal for assistance strategy, circumlocution strategy. The literal translation strategy dominates the strategies used by the English learners. Based on the findings, some suggestions are put forward as follows: the English learners should enrich their knowledge about the English rule and English vocabulary, Speaking teachers should introduce the communication strategies to the students. Abstract

Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menguraikan apa dan bagaimana cara bekerjanya hypertext sebagai  salah satu perkembangan  teknologi internet dan multimedia. Uraian dalam makalah ini hanya berdasarkan kajian pustaka dan bukan hasil penelitian. Hypertext ternyata sangat kompleks terutama dalam proses produksi. Namun dalam hal konsumsi hypertext sangat berguna untuk penjelajahan informasi hingga dapat dikatakan penjelajahan (browsing) melalui hypertext menjadi sangat menarik asalkan pada pihak pengguna memiliki tingkat computer literacy yang memadahi. Tanpa computer literacy, maka informasi yang terdapat dalam hypertext akan terlewati begitu saja. Lebih jauh lagi hypertext/ hyperlink kini telah menjadi paradigma baru media pembelajaran melalui Powerpoint 2003 / 2007.   Kata Kunci: hypertext, text, internet, multimedia, computer literacy

Abstract

A basic premise of this article is that the institutional teaching of translation studies has evolved in the past years partly due to a growing connection between theory and teaching practice. The present article focuses on how translation process in theories and practices, on why theory is important for the teaching of the profession, and on the nature of theory. This discussion leads to a fundamental concern for the training of future translators for professional work. It is argued that translation trainees should be exposed to a variety of approaches to translation which are inspired by and connect to different theoretical schools so that students are in this way taught to be flexible in their approach to texts and will also learn theory in practical application.   KEYWORDS: translation theories, translation practices, teaching, translation types, translator

Abstract

A work of literature is a reflection of events or phenomena in the society and expressed in several literary genre, such as drama, prose and poetry. It is also known  that social environment plays an important role in creating the culture and this is inseparable from the role of language. As a means of communication, language expresses all these social events loaded with moral values. Learning social culture and language shall contribute to the horizon of knowledge.  This paper tries to investigate the use of social culture and language in an attempt to learn American culture. Apart from the clear fact that there is a close relationship between language and culture, it should be noted that language is part of culture not the other way around. Therefore when learning a language, at the same time the students need to be equipped with the knowledge of culture. Abstract

This research proposed one of the approaches in teaching English in Economic Faculty at University of Stikubank. It aimed at using simulation in motivating students’ speaking skill in Business English class. It is a qualitative research and employs five data collection methods, namely: class observation, teaching journal, document collection, questionnaire and interview.  The results show that the students are highly motivated and they feel that they get enough practice as well as theory. Kinds of simulation that are effective in Business Class are building company (making business plan), conducting meeting, doing negotiation and presentation. In addition, it was suggested that that the lecturer should give feedback to the students, create materials in the form of hardcopy and slideshow and provide games and or other activities in the lessons.
