Abstract

The study analyzes the form in Oscar Wilde’s novel The Picture of Dorian Gray through point of view, character, and symbol. Point of view is analyzed by using categories of point of view (third or first person narrator). In analyzing character, it will use discursive and dramatic method, and in analyzing symbol, it will find a person, object, action, place, or event that, in addition to its literal meaning, suggests a more complex meaning or range of meanings. After analyzing those elements, this study finds the form by looking the pattern that lies in those elements. Key words: form, point of view, character, symbol.

Abstract

Languages vary considerably in the types of consonants which occur. Certain types of consonants are easier to produce than the others. Most students have difficulty in pronouncing [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ] since these sounds are not found in neither Indonesian nor Javanese. They tend to realize these sounds in other sounds. This article reports the realization of [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ] by the Indonesian students learning English. The data were obtained by means of recording 20 students reading words, phrases, and sentences containing [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ]. The unit of analysis of the study is words containing [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ]. Every word containing [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ] is transcribed. The correct pronunciation (for every research subject) for each pair of [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ] are counted to find out which one is more difficult for the student. The incorrect pronunciations for each pair of [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ] are analyzed in terms of the strategies (with what speech sound the student replaces). The research results show that [θ ʃ ʧ] are easier for the students to pronounce than [ð ʒ ʤ]. This is as what said by Hecht and Mulford (1982) that learners acquire voiceless consonants before the voiced consonants. The students employ transfer strategies when they find difficulties in pronouncing [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ]. They replace [θ] with [t], [s]; [ð] with [d], [θ], [nd]; [ʃ] with [s]; [ʒ] with [z], [ʃ]; [ʧ] with [c]; [ʤ] with [j]. Based on the findings, some suggestions can be put forward as follows: 1) The students should be taught the manner and point of articulation of [θ ð], [ʃ ʒ], [ʧ ʤ] so that they can produce those sounds correctly, 2) The students should be reminded that mispronunciation may cause misunderstanding. Key words: realization, transfer strategy, place of articulation, manner of articulation, adoption strategy, interlanguage

Abstract

A Friday Sermon delivery is a strategic mechanism for a Khatib (Preacher) to disseminate the divine truths—either from the quran, hadiths, Ijma’, or qiyas, and to convey the rights and responsibilities of Islam followers in respect to religious, social, economic and even political affairs. It is the language that plays a very significant role in encoding the Khatib’s messages. Therefore a Khatib (or any institution) preparing a sermon text needs to equip himself with a communication system in order to encode his social purposes. The system may prevent him from abusing the language to provoke the jama’ah (congregation). It may also lead him to use appropriate linguistic features to support the purposes, and to organize the purposes into a culturally recognized pattern or schematic structure to indicate that a sermon is different from other genres. To understand and describe the system we need to conduct a genre analysis on Friday Sermons using the model genre analysis offered by Eggins and Slade (1997). The English Friday sermons prepared by the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore were chosen and used as the model sermons to portray how purposes were encoded and organized into a particular generic structure potential.   Key Words: Communication system, Social/Communicative Purpose, Linguistic Features, Schematic Structure, Genre analysis, Generic Structure Potential

Abstract

The real cause of Soeharto’s fall from the Indonesian presidency remains a mystery. Richard Mann (1998) launched three significant rhetorical questions, i.e. (1) Was President Soeharto toppled by student demonstrators and people’s power? (2) Was he brought down by the withdrawal of support from the United States? (3) Or, was his sudden fall brought about by all of the two plus large doses of Oriental plotting and scheming? This paper attempts to analyze Richard Mann’s PSBDS in terms of its macrostructure in order to find out the real cause of Soeharto’s fall. The analysis is substantiated by different resources as linguistic evidences, to justify the validity of the findings. The study critical reading is the key to successful comprehension of a text, of which crosschecking with other resources is one. Key words: rhetorical questions, people’s power, oriental plotting and scheming, macrostructure, critical reading

Abstract

Most students study English and hope they can understand English actively. In fact, they don’t have a lot of chances to practice English in communication. They are reluctant to speak and afraid to make mistakes. They know much about English but they don’t know how to use it in communication. An effort to improve the students’ speaking skill is to use a role play as one method to teach English by creating English speaking atmosphere in class. In role play the students are set in a certain situation and they interact with their friends or partners to use English for communication. Key words: alternative, chances, atmosphere, role play

Abstract

A language user employs a particular thought pattern to express ideas.  The author, using his or her language, knowledge, thought, experience and world-view, expresses his ideas or intention in the written text. On the other hand, the reader, using his or her knowledge, language, thought, and  his or her view of the world, attempts to reconstruct  or interpret what the author  has expressed  in the written text. Because of the obvious difference between the writer’s world view and the reader’s world view, perfect comprehension can never be achieved.  So, communication problems sometimes arise, particularly when they (the reader and the writer) come from different cultural backgrounds. The purpose of  this study is  investigating the thought patterns that underlie the writing of The Jakarta Post’s English specific features performed by ‘matured’ Indonesians. The research design of the study is as follows: 1) selecting English specific features written by Indonesians, 2) observing the profiles of every text by identifying the title, the thesis statement, the topic sentences, the relation of ideas between paragraphs (thesis statement and topic sentences) and within paragraph (between the topic sentence and supporting sentences), pattern of development. The research results show  that the thought pattern underlying the English specific features written by Indonesians in The Jakarta Post is linear. The values characterize the manifestation of the thought patterns underlying the English specific features written by Indonesians are: usefulness, practicality, workable. It is suggested that 1) the language learners should be familiar with the thought pattern of the target language, 2) Language learners should be exposed with the target language because the exposure to the targetlanguage may influence their thought pattern or way of thinking when writing the texts of the target language. Key words: thought pattern, linear, non linear, deductive, inductive, digression, direct, indirect, coherent, incoherent

Abstract

This research is about one of the methods in teaching English in Reading Class in Language Faculty at University of Stikubank. It aimed at using an interactive method to improve oral communication skills. It is a qualitative research and employs five data collection methods, namely: class observation, teaching journal, document collection, questionnaire and interview. The population was the language students of STIKUBANK University. There were thirty one students. They attended the Reading Class in the semester. They read a narrative text, find out the roles then they act based on the plot of the narrative text. The results show that the students are highly motivated to have a role play as one of the methods used in reading class. They feel that they get enough practice to use English actively besides their understanding in reading a narrative text. The process of reading the text is satisfactory. The students can understand the plot and they can transfer it into a scenario of a play. Having got the scenario the students perform their play with enjoyable performances. Their oral communication in acting the role is tolerable too. Thus, reading to act by a role play can be used a Reading Class. In addition, it is suggested that in reading class the lecturer should give another interactive method besides a role play. She or he may apply many different activities to make a reading class more interactive.     Keywords: role play, plot, scenario, action research, teaching   journal.

Abstract

Literary works reflect the social life which the author lives in. It gives the reciprocal  effect between society and the works. Although, not all life is depicted in the works, it potrays part of human life in works. One of the example is Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. This novel depicts the social condition of England in 18th century. Moreover, it reveals the women’s characteristics at that time. The characteristics of women in 18th century is materialistic. It is caused by the inheritance system, primogeniture which disallowed second son and daughter to inherit. It gives big impact to women and social condition. They could not fulfill their need, so they want to get partner who could give them anything, love and money. Assimilation happens in this era because of primogeniture.   Keyword: England, women, 18th century, materialistic, primogeniture
