Abstract

This study aimed to develop a set of PISA-like mathematics problems on uncertainty and data content using football as a context which was valid, practical and had potential effects on students’ mathematical literacy ability. The method used in this study is design research with development studies type which had two stage: the preliminary and formative evaluation. Tenth-grade students of senior high schools in Palembang were involved in this research. This study produced a set of PISA-like mathematics problems at 3, 4, and 5 level. In this case, student’s strategies used some ability in solving one of the problems, namely mathematizing, representation, and communication ability. There were 16 out of 35 students using mathematizing and communication ability, 10 out of 35 students using representation and communication ability, and 9 out of 35 students only using communication ability. Also, the results of the interview with some students showed that they liked to do such PISA-like mathematics problems because they could improve their literacy ability in solving the PISA-like problem.

Abstract

One of the research objectives was formulated to improve the quality of education, namely by understanding the problems of students and teachers. There were three main groups of quality characteristics of education highlighted in scientific and academic literature in Russia, namely the quality of educational objectives, the quality of the educational process, and the quality of educational outcomes. The problem of education in Indonesia is the quality of the education process. The development of teaching materials is an alternative to improve the quality of the education process. Research so far has only focused on the implementation of learning models by teachers in the classroom, but the model is not integrated into the teaching materials used. This paper examines how the effectiveness of a product that has been developed for two years on 27 Indonesian students. The product produced is a guided discovery-based module in the Complex Analysis subject. This product was developed after the preliminary analysis (defining) process. Students are given 16 modules during lectures; then students are given a final test containing all the competencies that must be achieved. Test results are scored, and statistical analyses are conducted to compare them with student score before using the module. The test used is t-test. The design used is one of the experimental research designs, One Shot Case Study. The results of the study showed that students who were taught with modules developed effectively to improve student learning outcomes. Further research can be done by implementing different learning models in teaching materials.

Abstract

This design and development research was motivated by the rapid expansion and use of GeoGebra by mathematics educators (teachers and lecturers) in Indonesia. One of GeoGebra features is GeoGebra Applet that can be used, modified, and/or developed by educators for dynamic and interactive mathematics teaching and learning. At the time of research project, there is no GeoGebra Applets closely linked and aligned to the Indonesia national curriculum. The availability would be benefit for mathematics teaching and learning aligned to this curriculum. This research proceeds through seven steps of the Need, Capability, and Analysis (NCA) Model of Design and Development: 1) User Need Analysis; 2) Researcher as Developer Capability; 3) GeoGebra Applets Design; 4) GeoGebra Applets Development; 5) Experts Judgements; 6) Field testing in its Natural Setting Environment; and 7) the Prototype. The field testing was conducted with 8th grade students in a junior high school. Abstract

This study aims to produce valid and practical PISA-like mathematics problems of uncertainty and data content by using soft tennis and volleyball contexts in Asian Games. It also aims to find out the potential effect of the problems on students' mathematical literacy. The method used in this study was design research with the type of development studies. The validity was viewed from expert assessment regarding the content, constructs, language, and students’ comments to the clarity of the problems in the one-to-one phase. Then, the practicality was viewed in the small group phase, and it was found that the students could understand the problem well. Based on the answers from 33 tenth-grade students of senior high school, it was found that the problems had potential effects that arouse the ability to use symbolic, formal, and technical language, as well as the ability of operation, communication, and representation. With the problem of the soft tennis context, five students could apply the ability to use symbolic, formal, and technical language, and operations, 12 students could apply representation ability, and 16 students could apply the communication ability. Meanwhile, with the problem of the volleyball context, 18 students could apply the communication ability, and nine students could apply the representation ability.

Abstract

This study conducted to determine the mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy of technology integration and Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) based on gender and teaching experience. In this research, 66 mathematics teachers from national secondary schools were chosen as the samples to answer a survey questionnaire containing 71 items with a five-point Likert scale. Descriptive statistics, such as mean, percentage, and standard deviation, were employed to analyze the data. T-test was used to gauge the mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy of technology integration and TPACK based on gender, and one-way ANOVA was employed to determine mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy of technology integration and TPACK based on teaching experience. Besides, Pearson’s correlation coefficient was used to determine the relationship between the mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy of technology integration and TPACK. The findings showed no significant difference between genders and the teaching experience of the mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy and TPACK. However, mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy of technology integration and TPACK were strongly associated. In conclusion, whether male or female, for as long as mathematics teachers had been working, they have a positive self-efficacy in initiating technology integration and introducing TPACK. The implication was gender and teaching experience were not a critical factor for mathematics teacher’s self-efficacy of technology integration and TPACK. For future research related to this study, it could introduce other factors, such as academic qualification and technology courses they had attended.

Abstract

This research was motivated by several studies which show that students have difficulties in understanding the material ratio, wherein one contributing factor is the lack of ability in proportional reasoning. The purpose of this study is to produce a trajectory of learning to help students develop abilities in comparison reasoning. Solution strategies in this study were the ratio tables and graphs using PMRI approach (Indonesian Realistic Mathematics Education) with OKU Timur context. This research was conducted in MTs Subulussalam 2 Sriwangi Ulu OKU Timur. The method used was design research with three stages, those are the preliminary experiment, design experiment, and retrospective analysis. At the preliminary experiment, researchers designed the Hypothetical Learning Trajectory (HLT). At the design experiment, HLT tested on students to develop informal knowledge into a formal knowledge of mathematics through activities. Abstract

This study aimed to determine the cognitive process employed in problem-solving related to the concept of area conservation for seventh graders. Two students with different mathematical ability were chosen to be the subjects of this research. Each of them was the representative of high achievers and low achievers based on a set of area conservation test. Results indicate that both samples performed more cyclic processes on formulating solution planning, regulating solution part and detecting and correcting error during the problem-solving. However, it was found that the high achiever student performed some processes than those of low achiever. Also, while the high achiever student did not predict any outcomes of his formulated strategies, the low achiever did not carry out the thought process after detecting errors of the initial solution gained. About the concept of area conservation, the finding also reveals that within the samples’ cognitive processes, the use of area formula come first before students decided to look for another strategy such as doing ‘cut-rotate-paste’ for the curved planes, which do not have any direct formula. The possible causes of the results were discussed to derive some recommendation for future studies.

Abstract

Reflective thinking is known as assessing what they know, what they need to know, and how they bridge that gap during learning situations. Relating what students knew with what they learn today is not easy, sometimes they forget or just cannot make a connection between it. This study will analyze how the students actively participating in reflective thinking by creating project-based learning on statistics lesson based on design research. Thirty-nine engineering students, in a group of four, were asked to make their own data, analyze and transfer it into a poster to inform the readers about the use of statistics in daily life. This study used the measurement of reflective thinking scales by Kember to analyze students answer through the worksheet and instructional activity. The instructional activity succeeds to reveals students thinking of all four skills; habitual action, understanding, reflection, and critical reflection. Furthermore, it also discovered the misuse of some terms when used in daily life.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the types of explanations made by pre-service teachers in mathematics learning. In this research, the types of explanations are used to describe the explanatory trends used by pre-service teachers in mathematics teaching. The descriptive qualitative research was chosen in this research. The research subjects are pre-service teacher as the students of Mathematics Education of PGRI Madiun University and Madura University who are studying Field Experience Practice. Of the 105 mathematics student, five students with a cumulative grade achievement of more than 3.50 were observed during the teaching practice at the school for approximately five meetings. The research data was obtained from observation, video recording, and interview. Data analysis was done through data condensation, data presentation, and conclusion/verification focused on pre-service teacher explanation on mathematics learning activity. The research findings indicate that the explanation used by the pre-service teacher in the mathematics learning starting from the most frequently used is the descriptive explanation (51,7%), giving of reason (36,2%) and interpretative (12,1%). Descriptive explanations are used to describe mathematical procedures. The type of reason-giving explanation is used to explain reasons based on mathematical principles. Furthermore, the interpretative explanation is used to explain the concepts and facts of mathematics.

Abstract

Developing PISA like mathematics problems using daily life context helps to improve the quality of learning. This study aimed to generate a valid, practical, and having potential effects on mathematics literacy ability PISA like mathematics problems with the context of sailing in the 2018 Asian Games. This research involved three expert reviews and 32 fifteen-years-old tenth-grade students of SMA N 10 Palembang, a public senior high school in Palembang Indonesia, as the research subjects. This study used the design research method of development studies type. The data were collected through documentation, walkthrough, tests, and interviews. The problem developed in this study is related to the length of wood required to span the sail. The results show that the problems are valid. The validity was viewed from its compatibility with the PISA framework, in which it had related the problems with daily life context of sailing in the 2018 Asian Games and space and shape content. The problems are also practical, viewed from students' understanding of the problem. And, the problems have potential effects when tested in learning issue of mathematical literacy ability. The dominant ability is reasoning and representation ability, while the communication ability is still low because the students do not give detailed answers.
