Abstract

The main objective of this study was to investigate speaking ability of Muhammadiyah University students. It is the most intense language ability which is used in communicating with others. Speaking material plays an important role in various language productions. Such conversation can be in the form of discussion, speech, debate, dialogue, storytelling, retelling. The speakers use oral language to express their desires, feelings, thoughts with others, so that people can understand what they want, but there are still many misunderstandings that can affect the students’ mastery of accuracy, fluency, flexibility and comprehensibility. A total number  of 35 students in third semester studens have been involved in this study, who are sampled by using total  sampling technique. From this study, it was found that leaning community can motivate students to speak up effectivelly. The students’ competence in speaking skills of Unismuh Makassar are not fully in line with curriculum expectations in terms of the critical thinking. Therefore,  to achieve the goal of teaching speaking skills, lecturer are required to use the methods that can encourage the leaners’ interest and motivate  more until their speaking skills can be improved. The key words of the learning community method are learning and sharing experiences with others, working with others to create better learning among members of groups enhance the awareness, confidance, and sharing experience. The finding of this study can improve the speaking abiity from learning community stages futhermore it has been answer the researh question  in terms of the application of Learning Community can attract studets participation in oral skill.

Abstract

ABSTRACTIt is notable to note here that self-efficacy needs to be ingrained strongly within graduate students to show a higher enthusiasm, efforts, and persistence in accomplishing various demanding academic writing projects. Tangibly, there are still many graduate students who lack motivation and confidence when doing academic writings. As a result, their attitudes toward writing turn into negative actions crippling their self-efficacy. This study aimed to investigate graduate students’ perceived self-efficacy in academic writings. One research problem was formulated in this study namely, how do English Education Master Students maintain their self-efficacy to accomplish their academic writings? This study employed a mixed-method harnessing classroom survey and interview questions to gather data from English Education Master Students engaging in academic writings, Sanata Dharma University, Yogyakarta. Findings from this study revealed that graduate students are able to produce more qualified academic writing products when they are motivated continuously by their lecturer. Abstract

Nowadays, a new trend in the teaching and learning process emerges along with the development of technology. This study aims at exploring the pedagogical competence of English teachers at SMPN 8 Satap Maiwa. It also aims at finding out the students' perceptions of their teachers' pedagogical competence. There were three kinds of instruments in this study. They were observation, interview, and a questionnaire. Based on the interviews, the results showed that the teachers enjoyed teaching in the classroom, and they were interested in conducting online instruction even sometimes found problems in doing the process. Based on the questionnaire, the researcher found students perceived their teachers as quite good instructors in the classroom. Finally, the researchers suggested to the teachers that they should always intend to improve their competence by applying some new methods to make students better understand the materials.

Abstract

ABSTRACTThe objectives of this research were to find out the students’ speaking problemsat the fourth semester of English Study Program in Sembilanbelas November University and factors affecting them. This research employed case study with qualitative approach. There were 26 participants at class A of the fourth semester in English Study Program. Those participants were selected through purposive sampling technique. To gain the data interview, observation sheet, and students’ transcript report were used. The result showed that there were four problems that were experienced  by students at the class A fourth semester first was inhibition, when speaking the students tend to be worried about making mistake, getting criticism from others, and shyness. The second was lack of ideas; the students tend to be silent participants in speaking due to lack of vocabulary and grammar. The third was low or uneven participation in speaking. Here, only few students participate the speaking activities while other remaining silent. And the last was students got difficulty to speak because of the influencing of mother-tongue use. There were two factors affecting the students’ speaking ability such as internal and external factors.  The internal factors here the students have low motivation in speaking while the external factors were the students’ condition in the classroom

Abstract

Along with the increasing popularity of Project-Based Learning (PBL), teachers are aware of the benefits of PBL to implement it in their classroom. The literature has shown that the use of PBL can enhance students' skills, ability, and interest while learning because it focuses on students learning process than the teaching process. However, in a context in Indonesia, there is still a lack of research perceptions of PBL especially in the Critical reading class and collected data to determine if PBL has positive impacts on students learning in the university. The research is aimed at investigating students' perceptions about PBL by implementing a half-semester project in the Critical Reading class. This study employed a mixed-method that includes both quantitative and qualitative data collection and analysis by involving undergraduate students of the 4th semester who take a critical reading class in Universitas Sebelas Maret. It is expected to show us an example of PBL practice in critical reading class and how students thought about its implementation and improvement. This study provides a students' perceptions of PBL in critical reading class. The results add to the findings and discussion on what makes the method of teaching PBL more successful and have practical implications for classroom teaching.

Abstract

This study attempts to help senior high school English teachers in developing their teaching material about advertisement, which is included in the state mandated curriculum. Having analyzed 20 advertisements, we found two types of speech acts, namely representatives and directives.  The representative acts used were 59% and directive acts were 41% of the data. The advertisement strategy in Indonesia utilized representative acts, which intended to highlight the good quality of the products or services, whereas, the use of directive acts was situational since it is usually preceded by the appearance of representative acts. Since both speech acts frequently appeared in the advertisements on Indonesian online news websites, we recommend that teachers should provide exposures toward the linguistic features, which support students’ ability to produce advertisement texts containing representative and directive acts.

Abstract

The National Exam of 2019 is still one of the absorbed issues to discuss. The researcher brings the issue up because in a couple of years there might be no more National Exam since the new minister is more likely to believe that Exams are conventional so the issue of abolishing it is heating up again. The National Exam has become a standard evaluation made by the government for every school level. The English exam is an English proficiency test for students. Yet, the test consists of listening and reading comprehension only. The objectives of the study are to find out whether the questions tested are appropriate with the qualifications, criteria, and the goals of each competence. Then, the researcher analyzed the error of each question. The researchers applied the general method in assessing the English test referring to the Hakuta and Jacks (2009) guidelines. The researcher applied descriptive qualitative as the research design. The test is focused more on cognitive skills, especially in reading skills. The students are taught all four language skills in schools and are expected to be superior to all of them at least. The researcher finds some errors in the test such as the test directions are unclear. Then, the questions are compiled disorderly and the amount of questions for each language competence is not equal. The test is not appropriate with the language learning objectives and so does with the language mastery demands.

Abstract

This study deals with the phenomena of code-mixing with a specific focus on commercial advertising specifically in Indonesian commercial context. It analyzes the use of these techniques in order to produce a persuasive effect in Indonesian today.  The objective of this study to investigate the forms of code mixing used in Commercial Advertisement and to shed light on the factors of using code mixing in Commercial Advertisement. The study employs a qualitative descriptive approach by describing about forms and factors of using code mixing in Commercial Advertisement. The research findings revealed six forms of code mixing utilized in Indonesian Commercial Advertisement today. Those are words, phrase, hybrid, repetition, idioms, and clause. The study further showed the factors of using code mixing in Commercial Advertisement. Those were interjection (Inserting sentence fillers or sentence connectors), quoting somebody else, talking about a particular topic, expressing group identity, being emphatic about something and repetition used for clarification.

Abstract

This study's objectives explored two prominent cases: (1) the forms of stereotype in Literature Faculty and (2) how the influence of stereotype in intercultural communication toward the students of Literature Faculty. This study applied qualitative research, which explored the stereotype and intercultural communication toward Literature Faculty students. The researcher applied purposive sampling to gain data. There were 15 students participated as the participant, and the data were obtained through interviews. This study shows that stereotypes in Literature Faculty were stereotypes towards Makassar Ethnicity (Rudely) and stereotypes towards Buginese (Uang Panaik it is too expensive). Even though the students learned many negative stereotypes toward Makassarese and Buginese, most students were not affected by these negative stereotypes. The students chose to trust personal experience and establish effective communication with Makassarese and Buginese, which eventually eliminated negative stereotypes towards the Makassarese and Buginese groups.
