Abstract

The current state of corruption should encourage every citizens of the nation, all parties, the leaders of the nation, law enforcement officials, educators and religious leaders, to focus their attention to character building. Character development should be established as part of the national strategy to improve nation’s life. The study begins from my concern about the backwardness of character education in Indonesia, and then from there I attempts to propose alternative solutions. The article concludes that to be successfull, character development should include the participation of three important institutions of social life: family, school and community. Therefore, the first step  is  to reconnect the educational institutions with other institutions. Without the three institutions, the school character education program is only a discourse which will not succeed because there is no continuity and harmonization.

Abstract

The conflict does not automatically lead to disintegration. Sociologist like Georg Simmel and Lewis Coser reinforce this assumption. Conflict can also function to strengthen social groups and restore social integration. Conflict and integration (harmony) like two sides of a coin, different but still one. This paper supports the assumption above. After the conflict between the community and Ahmadiyah’s followers in the three Regencies (Garut, Tasikmalaya and Kuningan), they live in harmony (integration). This fact in line with the argument of Georg Simmel and Lewis Coser. This study showed that the conflicts occurred in three regencies (Garut, Tasikmalaya and Kuningan), did not make the Ahmadiyah adherents disintegrated and crumbled. But on the contrary, Ahmadiyah followers increasingly integrated, solid and live co-exist with the non-Ahmadiyah community and live harmoniously.

Abstract

The issue of environmental conservation is an interesting study nowadays because the effect of global warming has been felt by mankind. Many national and international policies that toward environmental conservation perspective is encouraged, so did Unnes with its vision of conservation. Besides these policies, local communities actually have a perception about environmental conservation from their values and knowledge systems. The aim of this research is to find out society perception about environment conservation and the appearance of perception on the daily activities of the society. The research method is qualitative to gain accountable and valid data. Perceptions of environmental conservation can not be separated from their activities as farmers. The level of dependency on environtment makes perception of conservation is embedded well within the pattern of their daily lives. But this perception has shifted in line with social changes that occur. The presence of Unnes in their territory is the main factor of social changes in society. Interaction between Sekaran society with students as immigrant helped change their views about the nature and the occupation system. When the occupation system no longer depend entirely on the management of natural resources, so the perception of environmental conservation also shifted. This can be seen on their activity patterns that no longer has a full commitment to environmental conservation. Communal ritual that used to function as a place of transformation values of environmental conservation has been replaced with the personal activities of environmental hygiene has a narrower meaning.

Abstract

Jayapura city is the capital of Papua province, located at the eastern end of Indonesia and the borders with neighboring countries, Papua New Guinea. From the results of population census in 2010 the population of the Jayapura city is 256.705 inhabitants with a number of indigenous people as much as 89.773 people (34.97%) and as many as 166.932 nonPapua population (65.03%).  This figure shows that in Jayapura city, the number of migrants is much more than the indigenous people.  The term amber and komin then appears that refers to the indigenous people of Papua (komin) and immigrants nonPapua (amber).  The high migration flows in Jayapura resulting diversity in socio-cultural and economic structure of the population.  This impacted on the formation of the population settlement patterns.  This paper discusses the ethnic heterogeneity in Jayapura city community in shaping the urban spatial pattern.  From the discussion, it is known that the existing settlements in Jayapura city consists of settlements indigenous peoples, settlements inhabited by a mixed population of Papua and nonPapua population, settlements inhabited by ethnic Papuans from outside the city of Jayapura and settlements inhabited by ethnic immigrants certain nonPapua. Settlement indigenous peoples still survive as indigenous settlements that have a spiritual religious meaning that must be maintained and protected. While the settlement of migrants Papua and nonPapua formed by some preferences, namely the ties of kinship, proximity to sources of livelihood (workplace) and social status.
