Abstract

Economic contribution of bakul women (small tradeswomen) was manifested in informal sector activities such as merchants, laborers, homeworkers, and family workers. Rural society activities indicated cooperation between men and women. One job conducted by women in informal sector was bakul. The work is a progress for women regarding work division; however, it is also a challenge, especially for children education in the family. Research location was in Gunungpati Subdistrict, Semarang City. The research was conducted using qualitative approach. Research result shows that bakul women worked in informal sector to fulfill economic need of the family because the income from their husband was insufficient to fulfill daily needs thus they tried to look for additional income.  Various types of empowerment for bakul women had been conducted either from the internal of bakul itself or from external. Through the empowerment, they were able to fulfill their daily needs such as to buy clothes, to send their children to school, to buy rice and side dishes, and even to give donation for the provision of basic needs.

Abstract

Referring to the studies on the success of community forestry, the proponents suggest reducing the influence of the state to the people who maintain traditional institutions in forest management. However, knowledge about the interaction of formal and informal institutions in the context of changing smallholder farmers is still not fully understood. Through a phenomenological approach assessing the differences of forest conserving institutions’ performance across villages in Semende, South Sumatra, we analyze the process of how traditional institutions can survive or collapse. The main finding shows that traditional institutions gained support and legitimacy from government’s formal institutions, to enforce the rules, are able to survive until now. The key factor determining the success or failure of traditional institutions is the structure of community’s authority; whether it is based on to inherited knowledge or not. We propose a new hypothesis for the concept of local institutions that successfully manage natural resources.

Abstract

This article examines student politics articulated by university students in contemporary Ternate, North Maluku. The involvement of students in the political arena in the region is mostly organized through regional (ethnic) organizations. The larger context of such political process is decentralisation, which make religional resource  resources dominated by the state. At the same time competition among local elites and ethnic groups flourish. This is the main background of a new formation of group interests in local level –-including local university students-- to gain group advantages. The case of Ternate, North Maluku, is an example of how groups of students organize their practical interests in the arena of politics by exploiting youth associations and ethnic organizations.

Abstract

This article discusses the issues around the socio-cultural phenomenon that employ interdisciplinary studies between linguistics, anthropology and sociology to study the linguistic behaviors of the Lampungese society in a way to grasp their worldview. The data were technically collected through observation and literature reviews to bring out the voices and experiences of the people who mostly affected by the concept of Piil Pesenggiri, of people whose voices have been missing in literature and debate. The production and reproduction of identity through Piil Pesenggiri seems to remain a finding tradition exist among the Lampungese which primarily resulted both demographic and the local political change allowing emergence of a capitalist strategy "retreatment" used as a form of resistance against the transmigrants. It is not a secret anymore that Piil Pesenggiri which many of us understood as the life philosophy of Lampungese triggers negative stigma amongst other shared races or tribes of transmigrants, it is a shift of viewing piil as a mere "cultural shield" or cultural fortress within their social relations. It then becomes clear that the worldview of the social facts of the community as well as segregation that plunges into the socio-political aspects of society including education, cultural symbols, the political flow of identification of social structures. Todays, the existence of Piil Pesenggiri ethnolinguistically is deemed to reflect cultural capital, a static and contextual product of identity which cannot be separated from the people (ulun) Lampung. The empirical information obtained by this research is expected to be utilized by various stakeholders concerning the problem of relations between ethnic groups in taking the attitude, policy and purposes of a scholarship. Such studies are of course useful not only for reconciliation to conflicts involving the ethnic communities, but also to the ability to maintain a well-created social harmony as well.
