Abstract

Food security at household level is a very important precondition to foster the national and regional food security. Many people migrate to urban areas in the hope of improving their welfare. Generally people think that in the city there are more opportunities, but the opposite is true. The problem is more complex in the city especially for people who do not have adequate skills and education. This study aims to address whether  age of household head, household size, education level of household head, income, and distribution of subsidized rice policy affect the food security of urban poor households in Purbalingga district. A hundred respondents were selected from four top villages in urban areas of Purbalingga with the highest level of poverty. Using binary logistic regression, this study finds significant positive effect of education of household head and household income and significant negative effect of household size and raskin on household food security, while age of household head has no significant effect on household food security. The results imply the need for increased awareness of family planning, education, improved skills, and increased control of the implementation of subsidized rice for the poor.

It was conducted from 1995 until 2012 on five ASEAN member countrie: Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Singapore. It used the quantitative method; it is one-way random effect of panel regression. The data, which is functioned as dependent variables, were taken from WDI (World Development Indicator) of the World Bank for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Meanwhile, the data of revenue from the foreign tourist visit (Rec), the number of foreign tourist arrival (Arr), and the exchange rate (Xrate) are functioned as the independent variables. Based on the research result, there is evidence that international tourism can increase the economic growth in those countries. The three independent variables have a positive and significant impact to the dependent variables. Based on the findings, the governments of five ASEAN member countries should be able to maintain the sustainability of tourism sector in order to be stronger and to have global market-orientation. In fact, tourism services can support the economic growth because the potential of those ASEAN countries cannot be taken lightly.

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze and describe a strategy of food security achievement through land use at an area of migrant community. It was located in Wonogiri regency(an area with high migration), Central Java, Indonesia. It employed a mixed-method: quantitative and qualitative approach. The two approaches were used in the survey. The data collections used focus group discussions, in-depth interviews with key informants and participant observations. The results of the study formulated two strategies: land use strength and farmer institutional empowerment. The strategy of land use strength was divided into two scenarios. Scenario 1 referred to a maximal land use through essential food plant and agricultural extension (PPL). Scenario 2 referred to a non-maximal land use through diversification of food plant with a jajar legowo technique. The strategy of farmer institutional empowerment consisted of two scenarios. Scenario 1 referred to a high farmer institutional empowerment trough accompaniment. Scenario 2 referred to a low farmer institutional empowerment through accompaniment with standardization and development.

Abstract

Macro study is one approach that combines the rational method based on the results of previous studies by the authority with the empirical method utilizing the survey techniques. The purpose of this macro study is to identify and analyze the potentials, problems, and the limiting factors, and the needs of the regency; and to recommend the programs and models required by the community to achieve the sustainable development. This research uses the Participatory Rural Appraisal method, the  interview techniques (Semi Structured Interview), the technique of focused group discussion (FGD), the Rapid District Appraisal (RDA), then it is analyzed by the empirical and dynamical systems. The overview of macro studies is particularly relevant in developing the regions, especially the rural areas, based on the existing advantages, such as in Tabanan Regency. Tabanan Regency is a granary in Bali Province and the zoning of agricultural commodities in quadrant III,which is the rural farming area with combined functions between the cultivated and rural areas supported by the tourism department. The studies of the areas in the form of potential analysis, problem analysis, requirement analysis become the guidelines for preparing the development scenarios and program formats. The studies will then constitute the factors driving the realization of sustainable development of tourism villages in supporting the sustainable agriculture.
