Abstract

Laki – laki Pemanggul Goni is one of Budi Darma‘s short stories. It was firstly published in Kompas, 26 February 2012, and was then translated by Andy Fuller in 2015. Lontar Foundation published the translated version along with the other translated Budi Darma‘s short stories in a book entitled Conversations. Budi Darma is famous of his surrealist work. It is reflected also in Laki – laki Pemanggul Goni. Therefore, this study was intended to find whether its‘ English version conveyed exactly the same characteristics of surrealism as it was in the original version. Bassnett‘s translation as comparative studies, Popovics‘ types of translation equivalence, and Breton‘s surrealism in literature were implemented as the theoretical framework. This study found that both versions did not convey precisely the identical characteristics of surrealism. The Indonesian version‘s surrealism is stronger than it is in the English version. It might occur because of the cultural gap between the author‘s and the translator‘s.

Abstract

There are certain concerns that a teacher needs to observe in assessing students oralperformance, such as the amount of words, the grammatical errors, the hesitation and certain expression. This paper attempts to give overview of research results using qualitative method which show the impacts of self repair typeanalysis as development- oriented self-assessment in oral performance. The subject was the tertiary level learners of English Department, Universitas Negeri Semarang, Indonesia in 2016. They performed the speaking tasks oraly in Speaking For General Purposes class. They were given the modified rubric of oral performance including the aspects of self-repairs and asked to evaluate their own performance (selfassessment). They were introduced by the term of self-repairs in simple manner and they were instructed to give self and other repairs whenever they needed in their perfomances.All the spoken data were recorded. Concerning the repair types, there are two self-repairs as reviewed by Buckwalter (2001) which occured in self-assessment, they are Self-Initiated Self Repair (SISR), and Self-Initiated Other Repair (SIOR). The finding showed that SIOR occured 60% of all the repairs in students‘ conversation. Then, it could be as development-oriented self-assessment which can be a valuable additional means to improve students speaking since it is one of the motives that drive self- evaluation, along with self- verification and self- enhancement.Also, this development- oriented self-assessment began to receive attention as the result of increasing interest in the learners- centered approach. The results are hoped to give beneficial implication on student‘s oral performance assessment.

Abstract

This study deals with the rendering of ideology found in the English-Indonesian translation of Brontё‘s Jane Eyre. The main objective of this study is to investigate the rendering ideology in Brontё‘s Jane Eyre from English into Indonesian which is realized in the vocabulary and grammar choices used by the translator in translating ideology in Jane Eyre from English into Indonesian. It used descriptive qualitative approach. Moreover, Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) proposed by Fairclough (1989) is used as the framework of the study. The data obtained were taken from ‗Jane Eyre‘ by Charlotte Brontё and it is translated by Lulu Wijaya entitled Jane Eyre. The unit of analysis of the study was ideological content including word, phrase, clause, sentence, and paragraph contained in Jane Eyre and its translation.The results showed that there are 120 ideologically loaded-data which is categorized into Ideology. They are ideology as tacit assumptions, beliefs and value systems. Meanwhile, there are 32 (27%) data which are not lexically equivalent in the Indonesian translation. Thus, the remaining data represent the ideology of the source text in the same way. Based on those findings, the writers concluded that most of the ideologically-contested words, nominalizations, and voices are rendered into Indonesian. There are no ideological differences between the source text and its translation. Furthermore, the translators mostly expressed ideology of the source similarly by means of selecting similar lexical choices. It means that translator‘s ideology in the source text and their translation in the target text reach ideological equivalent.

Abstract

Language is a means of communication in Literature. People can understand and analyze any story by using language. They can also find out the content of story from different country. Readers can also compare story from one country to another country. They can also translate story from different country with their own mother tongue. One example is The Red Badge of Courage. We can get many lessons and ideas from this American novel. It is a war novel, which focus on American Civil War. Henry Fleming is one of main characters in the novel. Regarding to the history of Civil War, we still have many questions from the content of it. How about the main character‘s dreaming in civil war? Can his bravery influence to his friends? What is the moral value from this war novel? People can get many imaginations and lessons from the main character, Henry Fleming. Descriptive qualitative is a method in discussing this novel. Reading, understanding, and analyzing are the necessity things to do. The idea and opinions from novel and reference books are sources in getting idea. We can take this novel is as a zero to hero novel regarding to the main character‘s activities. All soldiers in his troop surprise when they see a brave-heart person, Henry Flaming. Furthermore, Henry shows that he can beat his cowardice to be a brave man. His wound is a proof of being a hero in his troop. His questions of being a brave soldier show up after he beats all trials in civil war. Self-confidence in Henry Flaming is a way to show that a soldier must have bravery in leading a troop.

Abstract

In Gidden‘s Structuration theory, the most important concept is duality of structure, where agent and structure affects each other and have equally important position. This article is written to find out the duality of structure in Eugene O‘Neill drama entitled All God‘s Chillun Got Wings. The analysis is trying to examine the drama as one of O‘Neill‘s power to change the structure that he has. The analysis unit for the structure is taken from the the literature about the social background in American society in the late 19 th century and early 20 th century, while the analysis unit for the agent is taken from O‘Neill‘s drama as a reflection of the action in which O‘Neill implemented his power. Therefore, it is concluded that O‘Neill duality of structure can be observed through his action in the drama to change the structure which shaped him as an agent. Some of his actions has resulted in an unintended consequences which will become an unacknowledged condition of actions for another action.

Abstract

The research is aimed at preserving the story of Kota Sala Legend. It used qualitative approach. The data were derived from caretakers, the elderly, the artists from Surakarta Palace, and the public figures, as well as from books and articles by using documentation and interview techniques. The data were analyzed by using qualitative descriptive method into several steps as the following: (1) Conducting interview and observing the documents, (2) Collecting and arranging the data into a complete story, (3) Analyzing its character values, and (4) Analyzing its relevance as a teaching material. The results indicate that (1) the oral tradition of Kampong Sala Legend can be documented into a pictorial story book in three languages: Javanese, Indonesian, and English; (2) The story consists of character values such as religious, honest, discipline, hard-working, creative, solicitous, and responsible; (3) The story is very relevantly used as teaching materials at school especially in the subject of Bahasa Jawa and Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

Based on many researches have been done, the Qur‘an uses literary methods in conveying the messages. This research uses different perspective in proving such conclusion by using English translations of the Qur‘an written by four authorized Qur‘an translators. The researcher uses Hermeneutics and Aesthetics to find the literary substantiations of English translations of the Qur‘an. Of course there will be random verses of the Qur‘an that would be choosen to be analyzed. Both analysis devices say that English translations of the Qur‘an have literary traces that signify the Qur‘an as a literary masterpiece, such as not only in owning different dictions and layers of meaning but also in owning aesthetic process and poetic texts.

Abstract

A research on merging English into Sport in Aerobic Exercise based on Content-Based Instruction (CBI) was conducted related to the need of the aerobics instructor who can lead the class in English especially with the present of Asean Economic Market in the end of 2015. The problem being evaluated in this paper was ―is there any difference influence between CBI learning model and conventional learning model to the aerobics instructor performance in English? The aim of this research is to evaluate the different influence between CBI learning model and conventional learning model to the aerobics instructor performance in English. 20 students of Semarang State University and Wahid Hasyim University were grouped into 2 groups. One is CBI group and the other ones is conventional group. The treatment was conducted for 6 weeks, 12 meetings. The result showed that the significant score for CBI group is 0,005<0, 05, meaning H1 is accepted. Therefore there is a significant difference between those who have been taught using CBI to those who have been taught using conventional learning for the aerobics instructor performance in English.

Abstract

A variety of technologies are all around us in our homes, offices, and schools. Today, students are familiar with number of applications of computer network technology such as multimedia, email, electronic journals, databases, World Wide Web, chat, blog, audio social media and video conferencing etc. Technology plays a positive role in promoting activities and initiatives of the students in English classroom. Interactive teaching and technology put the emphasis on communication, interaction, and discussion between teachers and students as well as the positivity of teachers and students in the teaching and learning process. The fact that by providing technology and applying interactive teaching can make the students be active and creative so that the teacher should know how to provide the technology in teaching and learning process. The aim of this paper is to explore some activities in interactive teaching and provide how to apply them in EFL classroom by providing the use of technology such as digital storytelling, podcast, clipped students, conversation analysis from YouTube, apposite arguments, and Powtoon.

Abstract

One of the identities of a poem is reflected by its author‘s style of writing, including the use of rhymes. How each specific kind of rhymes formed by particular words marks the characteristics of poems, and likewise those in Lewis Carroll‘s Through the Looking-Glass. Therefore, this research aims to delineate the kinds and functions of rhymes and to explicate how Lewis Carroll forms the rhymes from linguistic deviation as his style of writing poems in Through the Looking-Glass. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from poems in Through the Looking-Glass novel. The data were collected by note-taking and phonetic transcription technique. The data were then analyzed to classify the kinds of rhyme and their functions and also to identify the linguistic deviation the author uses to form the rhymes. Lewis Carroll exploits various kinds of rhyme in Through the Looking-Glass, e.g. alliteration, assonance, consonance, euphony, cacophony, eye-rhyme, half-rhyme, perfect rhyme, internal rhyme, end rhyme, masculine rhyme, and feminine rhyme. Those rhymes are utilized to unite the poems, to reinforce and emphasize the author‘s intended meaning, to explain the implied sense and feeling, to clarify the imagery for the readers, to visualize the atmosphere of the poems, and also to achieve the poetic and musical functions. Moreover, in forming those rhymes, he employs phonological deviation, lexical deviation, grammatical deviation, semantic deviation, dialectal deviation, and deviation of historical period as his style of writing poems in Through the Looking-Glass novel.
