Abstract

This paper discussed about system constraints in ‚National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets‛ movie. The writer used the qualitative research with discourse analysis approach to explain the content of this paper. There were two data sources; it was the primary data and secondary data. The primary data were movie and the movie script of ‚National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets‛. The secondary data source were got from books, essays, articles, magazines, internet and journals. In this research, the writer used documentation as the way to collect the data. Documentation was movie script. The writer found that: (1) some people would open communication with various ways by saying: hi, hello, good afternoon, and introduce himself, (2) during 45 minutes those were 4 conversations on mobile phone. Two of them do not use an open signal, (3) there are verbal communication such as; OK, yeah, uh-huh, well, all right, and uh and non-verbal communication such as: smiling, head nodding, laughing, eye contacting, and increasing volume of voice, (4) these are a lot of statements that can be interpretable and hearable, (5) bracket signals in this movie such as intonation and shifts in body position, (6) overlaps (not-interruptions) do happen in this movie, (7) nonparticipant move to be participant by repeat sentence that he overhears in the ongoing conversation and non-verbal signal (gazing steadily), (8) the bracket signals are intonation and shifts in body position, (9) the preempt signals found in the movie are: no...no, excuse me, hoi, with respect and I am sorry, and (10) the Grice maxim of relevant is ignored.

Abstract

This paper explores the concept of patriarchy as an undesirable ideology that promotes the oppression of the weak and vulnerable in society by the strong and powerful in Isidore Okpewho’s The Last Duty. It is widely held that patriarchy promotes the domination of men over women and promotes an artificial hierarchy of class in which women become subordinates to their male gender. Yet, patriarchy does not only make subjugates of women. Depending on the dictates and expectations of a culture, men, like women, can equally be made subjugates of patriarchy if they are deemed unworthy of the title of a man. This usually happens when they do not measure up to the standard of societal expectations, particularly, within African cultural setting. Using the theory of Marxism, this paper argues that patriarchy not only succeeds in creating a society that operates on classism in which women are the subordinates; men too become victims. In addition, patriarchy inflicts deep psychological trauma on men and women who suffer its tenets. The conclusion is that men and women collectively fight patriarchy in order to achieve an egalitarian society where synergy can be harnessed for the betterment of all.

Abstract

Slang words have been exercised by people in every day communication, particularly in informal speaking. The understanding of slang word meanings is beneficial for language users to maintain smooth communication with others. One of the alternatives to study word meanings is utilized by semantic analysis. Drug is one of the most common referent of slang words in English. There are many synonymous words referring to drug, yet this paper displayed some of those words. The data were collected in a purposive sample method. The slang words taken as the data were restricted to those which were produced in 1990s and the 2000s. Three key words referring to drug were involved to sort the data: amphetamine or nervous stimulant, ecstasy, and cocaine. The slang words analyzed were focused on the forms of exocentric compounding. There are two main objectives presented in this paper: to figure out what slang words referring to drugs and describe the associative patterns of the words. The data then were analyzed in terms of their associative patterns adopting Mattielo’s theory (2008). The result shows that most of slang words referring to drug have appearance and effect patterns.

Abstract

History of English Literature is one subject that is taught by semester fifth in English Literature students. This subject discusses about the history of English Language and Literature that includes the periods of literature and the characteristics. The aim of this research was to evaluate RPS in History of English Literature. The subjects were the fifth students of English Literature. The research used qualitative. In doing the research, I broke down all parts in lesson plan, such as capaian pembelajaran lulusan, capaian pembelajaran mata kuliah, deskripsi mata kuliah, and kemampuan yang diharapkan. After broke down all parts in lesson plan, I saw there was an importance thing in learning History of English Literature among fifth semester students of English Literature because this subject gave knowledge about the history of English, particularly the literature, the periods of literature, and the literary works in each period. Although the subject was important for students, there was imbalance between graduate learning outcome (Capaian Pembelajaran Lulusan) and course learning outcome (Capaian Pembelajaran Mata Kuliah). To solve its imbalance, I gave the knowledge about the development of language among students by lecturing and answering some questions. The result showed by giving questions about the development of language and the period of literature, students increased knowledge about this subject.

Abstract

The process of translation is beyond finding equivalents in the target language (TL) or conveying the general meaning of the source language (SL). For having an acceptable and understandable rendering, some techniques and strategies should be selected as the basis of translating. In ‚Does my head look big in this‛ novel the translator used some techniques but this study only aimed at analyzing the pure borrowing technique. It is a technique in the translation to take a word directly from the SL into the TL without any adjustment. The data of this study were collected by selecting the pure borrowing words found in all chapter of the novel. The result of the analysis shows that there are 85 pure borrowing words used in this novel. The words consist of 4 word classes namely noun, verb, exclamation, and adjective. The calculation mentions 88 % of the pure borrowing words are nouns, 6 % are adjective, 4 % are verb, and 2 % are exclamation. Applying appropriate techniques such as pure borrowing in translating might be needed in order to make the translation product reliable and acceptable for the reader but the translator must consider some aspects that might be related to the translation works itself

Abstract

Tajik poetry deviated from its mainstream with the victory of the communist revolution. The imposition of Russian language and the new communist literature made Tajik poetry to take influence from the works of Russian romantic poets and to have new themes. Meanwhile, it benefited from the ancient Persian poets and one can see the rhetorical figures such as metaphor, simile, conflict, pun, Īhām, proverb, husn-i ta'lil (good reason), imagery and paradox in the works of Tajik poets. Additionally, Bīdel's poem has also had a clear influence on the poetry of some contemporary poets. Tajik poetry is very close to the informal language of the people, and in these poems, we encounter words that are specific to the Tajik dialect. The first Persian she'r-e now (new poetry) in Central Asia was written by Sadriddin Ayni. In Tajik poetry, we occasionally encounter with recurrences, the nostalgia of the missed glory, the oppression of the nation, and the unwanted fate of their ancestors. In these poems, they rely on emotion and content, and the epic and passionate tone prevail other poetic performances. The present study gives a general overview of the poetry of some Tajik poets.

Abstract

This study intends to explain the effectiveness of Guided Reading Technique (GRT) and Reciprocal Teaching Technique (RTT) as a means of teaching English for IT purposesto differently motivated students. Based on the question, this research intends to show the effectiveness of GRT to teach highly motivated students, the effectiveness of RTT to teach lowly motivated students, and the difference between the groups of students before and after being taught using GRT and RTT. This quasi-experimental study uses 2X2 factorial design. Two groups of students are located in their regular setting, taught by relatively similar quality teachers, using similar teaching-learning facilities except teaching techniques which are made different. The first group was taught using GRT, while the second was taught using RTT. Prior to the experiment proper, pre-test was administered to the two groups. The purpose on this test was to make sure that their competence in English for IT purposes was equal. The students were also asked to fill in a questionnaire to measure their levels of motivation. The results of the experiment show that (1) both techniques provide the same results when applied to highly motivated students; (2) both techniques provide similar results when applied to lowly motivated students; (3) there is a significant difference among the groups of students before and after being taught using GRT compared to RTT

Abstract

The article attempts to provide a real account of problems faced by learners of English in producing a piece of written discourse. So it deals with data of second language acquisition (SLA) not with theory of SLA. A micro study was conducted aiming at finding out what textuality elements are problematic to the learners.The findings, hopefully, may serve as a reflective measure in preparing and focusing on what to be thaught and emphasized in teaching writing courses. Key words: SLA, textuality, written discourse, grammatical cohesion, lexical cohesion.

Abstract

This research was conducted to observe sixteen seven graders of Mondial Junior High School’ academic literacy in their academic written texts. The participants were accustomed to using English at their school. Yet, when they had to produce academic texts, the texts were produced in the level of knowledge-telling, which lacked time to plan and to set the goals. The data of this study were taken from their quizzes and final test of four subjects with different genres of texts. Because the quizzes and final test were graded, the quality of the data is ensured. The analysis was observed qualitatively from three dimensions, i.e. the linguistic, cognitive, and socio-cultural dimensions of literacy. To describe each dimension, there were some descriptors to guide the analysis process. The result shows that in general, the sixteen learners’ academic literacy was fairly good. However, some parts of the dimension of academic literacy such as the linguistic and socio-cultural dimensions should be improved in order to master the holistic dimensions of literacy. The learners should be introduced to some genres of texts which were considered new for them such as explanation text. Their mastery towards past tense should also be improved.

Abstract

Every learner has their own learning styles, and there are three types of learner; such as visual learner, auditory learner, and kinesthetic learner. This paper will talk about the three types of learners based on their learning styles, the classification of English Language Education Study Program students based on the three types of learners, and what should the teachers do to help them to achieve the greater knowledge while learning new things. The research using the VAK Learning Styles Self-Assessment Questionnaire obtained from Swinburne University of Technology. The result shows that from the total of 153 students, there are 47% visual type learners, 36% auditory type learners and 17% kinesthetic type learners.
