Abstract

Since democratization (Reformasi) in 1998, documentary films gradually evolve with their locus of production spreading across the Indonesian archipelago. With the spirit of democratization brought about by digital technology, film communities and civil organizations in outer islands of Java utilize digital documentary film to capture several pertinent socio-political issues and raise public and government attention and responses. Those issues are commonly overlooked by the local media and were never a part of local government’s policies. Based on our fieldwork conducted in three areas outside of the Java Island (Ambon, Aceh and Bali), where digital documentary filmmaking and civil organizations are active and vibrant, our study indicates that rather than simply producing documentaries, film communities or non-governmental organizations disseminated documentaries through public screenings to invite further engagement of audiences by discussing the film with authorities (policy makers) that were often invited in that event.  In this article, we attempt to illuminate how documentary filmmaking allows the unseen and neglected issues to be articulated visually and sonically. Therefore, it would be compelling public or media attention and encouraging further government policy to resolve that matters. In other words, documentary films are a catalyst for social change by taking their roles as witness for the public and demanding responsibilities of the political authority.

Abstract

Using the genetic structural analysis suggested by Lucien Goldmann, it has been shown that EmileZola, an adherent of naturalism, has managed to expose a distinctive world view through the mediationof his work bring La bête humaine. Through his career as an author who fully engaged in the social andpolitical life of his time, Zola firmly demonstrated a world view different than contemporary rulers. Hisinvolvement in the political field, his support and empathy for the weak who became victims of an unjustcapitalist system, and his commitment to the truth in which he believed, produced changes in the socialand political fields. This is evident from the contemporary recognition of social rights of workers and therelease of Alfred Dreyfus from prison. Yet for all that he paid with his life; Zola was assassinated bypolitical opponents.

Abstract

Mereka Bilang Saya Monyet, a movie by woman director Djenar Maesa Ayu, was a film about women with a different perspective. This movie reveals a discourse on both violence and women’s resistance against it. The dimensions shown included psychological, physical, and sexual violence between parents and their child, an adult men with his daughter, and adult men with adult women. Violence appears because of the unbalanced relationship between subject and object. The effects of this violence can take the form of fear, anger, or a feeling of inferiority and unworthiness, and the victim feels encouraged to act on it. Discourse related to gender-based violence is a result of a patriarchal cultural construction. In the film, resistance was portrayed through the victim’s suffering, anger, and physical resistance. Women directors perceived these issues from a different perspective. It is not enough to understand violence against women only from the normative perspective of law and social obligation. This issue must be understood by positioning women as the subject (survivor) and recognizing that violence against women is a crime against humanity.

Abstract

This study is aimed to know how gender and sexuality are performed in weblogs belonging to Indonesian lesbians. This research is particularly purposed to identify the ideological meaning behind the performative identity of lesbian bloggers, and also to measure hir resistance against subordination. This is a multidis-ciplinary-based qualitative research using Foucault’s concepts of power relations and technology of the self (as elaborated in History of Sexuality) and Butler’s theory of performativity. This study then applies Fairclough’s analytical method of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). This research takes Fried Durian, an Indonesian lesbian weblog, as its corpus. The result of the research confirms that the identification of lesbian identity tends to be the combination of femininity and masculinity. Through the process of crisscrossing, a lesbian performs hirself by doing “stage performativity”, embedding the identification of feminine and masculine identity through hir appearance, clothing, gesture, and sexuality. Thus, a lesbian blogger is a creative producer in which zie transforms the heteronormative discourse.

Abstract

Tantu Panggělaran (TP) is a work of literature that contains knowledge necessary for human beings to achieve perfection of living which is influenced by Javanese, Hindu (Shivaist), and Buddhist concepts. This research studies syncretism in the text of TP by using the theory of normative multiculturalism. The purpose of this research is to find out how syncretism occurred in people’s lives, as recorded in the text of TP. It is hoped this research can benefit the development of Javanese culture in general, and particularly Old Javanese culture from the late Majapahit era. The results show that TP is the implementation of cultural syncretism of Javanese, Hindu (Shivaist), and Buddhist cultures in a positive, mutualistic relationship.

Abstract

Journalistic photos appear in newspapers for news purposes. In many cases, many parties are interested in using the mass media for their own vested interests. The photos of the Presidential and Vice-Presidential candidates in the 2009 Indonesian election were examples of such uses. These photos contained symbols which were manipulated and presented in the public sphere. Hence, these photos also reflected power relations within Indonesian society, a society which is full of individual interests. This study attempts to show how the photojournalism appearing in the media during the 2009 election time was intensively used by the candidates, who were also the capital backers. The photos were not presented as they were, but rather composed upon the candidates’ request for the purposes of image building. For several reasons, including media survival in the global era and its heavy competition and pragmatic motivations, some media have shown a loss of “independency.” This study also shows that journalistic photos record the existence of values and interests of those appearing on newspaper. The 2009 Presidential and Vice Presidential campaign in Indonesia, one framed in photojournalism, is a social reality analogous to social theatre or a theatrical performance.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to explain the relation between human security and media studies when looking at the problem of security in Indonesia, a country experiencing a process of  democratization. In media studies, the problem of human security often only emphasizes discourse and event analysis, without relating it with the human security problem. Connecting human security and media is very important because media has a very important role in constructing the public and State’s opinion. This article analyses news, as reported in the media, then gives context about the State and problems related to human security. It is concluded that media is highly influential in studying human security because of its numerous economic, political and cultural interests.

Abstract

This paper discusses the other side of the potential negative effects, even failure, of the implementation of the decentralization policy in Indonesia. One cause of the demands to establish a new area is rent seeking, where local elites and local politicians try to regain power through the formation of new regions. One thing overlooked by scholars is the existence of local businessmen who also participated in the formation of new regions. Their presence did not appear as real as the local elites and party elites because they take roles behind the scenes as lenders; the group was later referred to as the “black market.” The existence of this black market in the regional areas is always necessary for an area’s local elites and political elites to regain power as one force.

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze the legal position of Towani Tolotang in the case of restrictions on religion in Indonesia. This paper is based on research toward the Towani Tolotang community in the Sidenreng Rappang Regency. Towani Tolotang is a local religion that continues to survive despite attempts to disband its followers, efforts which come not only from groups which disagree with the religion’s existence, but is also from the state. The discrimination experienced by followers of Towani Tolotang comes from two directions: first, from the public in the form of assumptions which denounce them, and second, from the government through a variety of regulations which limit the space for followers of Towani Tolotang to develop its teachings.
