Abstract

In the 2000s, banten (offerings) of ngaben (cremation), a ritual of death in Balinese community is obtainedthrough market so it creates the commodification of banten. This condition is caused by the characteristicsof banten as an economic item, so the Balinese especially women is no longer to be able to make banten, and the expanding of market ideology turns someone to be more comfortable buying banten ngaben ratherthan making them independently. This condition provides an opportunity for geria (house of the priest)to develop the industry of banten. This is well corresponded with the ideology prevailing in geria, namelymarket ideology so that they see banten as a source of benefit. The position of geria is stronger than theconsumer of banten because geria dominates various capitals, such as economic, social, cultural, and symboliccapital synergistically. As the result, geria as banten manufacturer controls consumer hegemonically. Thisphenomenon is reflected on the price of banten set by geria and the consumer is just following

Multicultural society in the United States is depicted as a mosaic, composed of a variety of races andethnic groups that have always been different from one another. Some people argue that multiculturalismmay undermine solidarity. Sui Sin Far in Its Wavering Image expresses her dissenting opinions. She whosupports diversity which is the main issue in America asserts that cultural differences have alwaysexisted. A person can be an American and can still be able to maintain another cultural identity. Shebelieves that all human beings are born free and are equal in dignity and rights. Thus, those who livein a heterogeneous society can be considered as a dignified society. Multicultural feminism theory isapplied to identify the inequalities induced by cultural, racial, ethnic, and sexual diversity.

Abstract

Border area studies has become extremely important since the state border creates tensions of sovereigntyand identity in relations between Indonesia and ten other neighboring countries. Border area cannotperceive as only a neutral area without any meanings as it becomes a mirror of the nation since it is theentrance for the coming of people and goods from other countries. The border area therefore is not onlya statement of the administrative line of the country that is influential for the sovereignty, but also ofthe cultural line to stress identity. This article shows that administrative-political border which dividesDayak Iban become two parts has also created the tension between state-society in the border area, as thenationalism has to face the distressed ethnic identities. Dual existence of the ethnic group is influential onthe maintenance of identity and nationalism of the border community, which shows a challenge to therole of the state. Moreover, the living condition of Dayak Iban in Badau is in contrast to the Dayak Ibanin Lubok Antu, which is more prosperous. The fact that the people in the border area live in scarcity, adversity, and inadequate has delegitimated the state existence that challenges the national identity. Thesituation has produced the fact that people of Badau perform three identities: as a border society (politics),as part of the Iban community (cultural), and as part of global society (economy). The findings sharpenFoote and Burke’s theory by presenting that identity is not only determined by the structural relations, butalso developed through contested process where the actors also produce meanings to state their existence.

Abstract

Patriotic songs basically originated from the history of education in Indonesia, starting from intellectualcircle and teachers in pre-independence era initiated by the Boedi Oetomo movement (1908), the 1928Youth Pledge and post 1945 independence. The form and meaning of the patriotic songs, either onvocals or with instruments, take place in ceremonial activities and performance art. According to AlanM. Meriam and RM. Soedarsono, this applies to public school, the Indonesian Air Force, and GeloraBahana Patria Choir. As for character education, the specialty of Yogyakarta reflects its identity as acity of struggle, city of education and city of arts and culture. According to the theory of transformation, something new, including the arrangements of patriotic songs in the forms of march, hymn, romancefor parade, military defile and aubade, is to restore the spirit of nationalism and patriotism. The successof transforming the patriotic songs so as to have new atmosphere is dependent on the various abilitiesto make the arrangement works, so that they can draw attention from the doers and the listeners andfunction in ceremony and performance art. In line with the Decree of the Ministry of National Educationof 2011 items 10 and 11 regarding the values of nationalism and patriotism, we can realize those valuesby singing patriotic songs, using Indonesian language as the unifying language, and acknowledging, appreciating and commemorating the services of national heroes.
