Abstract

Border area studies has become extremely important since the state border creates tensions of sovereigntyand identity in relations between Indonesia and ten other neighboring countries. Border area cannotperceive as only a neutral area without any meanings as it becomes a mirror of the nation since it is theentrance for the coming of people and goods from other countries. The border area therefore is not onlya statement of the administrative line of the country that is influential for the sovereignty, but also ofthe cultural line to stress identity. This article shows that administrative-political border which dividesDayak Iban become two parts has also created the tension between state-society in the border area, as thenationalism has to face the distressed ethnic identities. Dual existence of the ethnic group is influential onthe maintenance of identity and nationalism of the border community, which shows a challenge to therole of the state. Moreover, the living condition of Dayak Iban in Badau is in contrast to the Dayak Ibanin Lubok Antu, which is more prosperous. The fact that the people in the border area live in scarcity, adversity, and inadequate has delegitimated the state existence that challenges the national identity. Thesituation has produced the fact that people of Badau perform three identities: as a border society (politics),as part of the Iban community (cultural), and as part of global society (economy). The findings sharpenFoote and Burke’s theory by presenting that identity is not only determined by the structural relations, butalso developed through contested process where the actors also produce meanings to state their existence.

Abstract

Irwan Abdullah presents his argument that the concept of deviant is no longer relevant to the analysis of the activities of young people's. An effort to understand their activities as a subordinate expression of the culture domination is appropriate. Perceiving their activities as deviant cannot be understood with Geertz's cultural concepts. He said that culture is shared values. Young people have their own way in understanding the meaning of life. Their values are not merely inherited from older generation, but the products of the reinterpretation process. The author further argues that in today's social transformation process and media becomes the great agent in disseminates a new life style. This changes is determinant in the formation process of the young people chooses.

Abstract

The ethnic conflict in Indonesia is a sign of huge problems facing Jakarta and local areas Indonesia, therefore the explanation for its occurrence cannot be produced without examining the central-periphery relations, which involve structural problems in constructing and maintaining power. Ethnicity, for instance, has become political commodity, which is constructed by central powers and made manifest through the concept of SARA (ethnicity, religion, race and inter-group relations). Thus, government tends to find and explain the root of ethnic conflict in ethnic cultural differences itself, whereby differences of ideology and life practices are viewed as the source of conflict. This article attempts to examine ethnic conflict by analyzing three main factors, which are first, the change in the balance of ethnic relations. Second, the imposition of a uniform politics in pluralistic society. Third, a weakening of traditional relationship and the credibility of local elites as a result of government intervention. Based on these three factors, this article concludes that ethnic conflicts are not only matters of ethnic cultural differences, but also are rooted much deeper in systematic mistakes in managing these differences and the conflicts itself ,where culture has been used for government's political interests.

Abstract

Society and culture can no longer be viewed as they have been in the past. Fundamental changes in group and cultural dynamics provide a new context with implications on how anthropological research must be done. A major change is the shift from the view of societies and cultures as bounded systems to the deterritorialization of culture. The author identifies three stages of change bearing upon agrarian cultures, i.e., market entry, market integration and market expansion. There is a new social reality wherein increasingly intensive mobility is enabled by transportation and communication, thus allowing movement across geographic and cultural boundaries. The author notes that the implications of this are manifold, i.e., a shift in the context for the production of meaning; the problem of the locus of culture; conventional methods of data collection that do not inform the anthropologist on how to handle data available from electronic media; the problem of representation and representativeness; and the matter of determining the unit of analysis in research. Key words: culture change; cultural deterritorialization; research methods.

Abstract

Abstract

This article explains the phenomena of discrimination of Papuan Muslims in the local government in Jayapura Municipality of Papua. In the practice of bureaucracy especially the determination of officials, Papuan Muslims are not involved, even though they are indigenous Papuans. Conditions provide an explanation that there are problems that accompany Muslim travel in Jayapura. This study finds out that of the total 43 units of Regional Working Units (SKPD) which 5 are led by Muslims, while non-Muslims lead others. This composition is unequal of the population in this region, which has a 45% proportion of Protestants and, 41% of Muslims. This paper emphasizes three important points: first, special autonomy for Papua not only affects how regional sentiments are strengthened, but also impacts the treatment of particular groups, especially Muslims. Second, the determination of office in the government is strongly influenced by the similarity of primordial identity, especially ethnicity and religion. Third, from some positions held by Muslims, none of them are from Papuan Muslims.

Abstract

This article discusses the progressive Islamic movement developed by Muhammadiyah, a modernist Islamic organization established by Ahmad Dahlan on November 18, 1918. History has shown that Muhammadiyah, as a modernist Islamic organization, has instigated various social transformations that continue to affect Indonesian society by creating schools, hospitals, and orphanages that were inspired by modern, Westernized systems and modernist interpretations of the Qur'an. Even today, Muhammadiyah remains active in national activities and discourse, continuously responding to the ever-changing times. This article departs from the argument that the progressive movement developed by Muhammadiyah was translated from Ahmad Dahlan's desire to advance the ummah and to create a just and prosperous world, one that has been blessed by God. As such, it argues that Muhammadiyah's response to the problems of its ummah has been informed by the history of the movement and its founders.
