Abstract

The motivation for this study stems from the observation that the culture and ability of tertiary students to write scientific articles are at a low level. This study aims to describe the profile of students’ scientific writing abilities. A descriptive method was used to gather data from five tertiary institutions in West Java. This study used a qualitative approach. The samples included 5 lecturers and 211 students. Data were collected using student needs questionnaires, interviews with lecturers, and analysis of student scientific articles. Data collection techniques included questionnaires and interviews and were analyzed using descriptive data analysis. The findings indicate that students’ ability to write scientific articles falls within the sufficient category. Despite this reality, the questionnaire results reveal that students still encounter difficulties in writing scientific articles and require a learning model that makes the process easier and helps to overcome problems in writing. The analysis of interviews with lecturers of scientific writing courses suggests that students’ ability to write scientific papers is adequate. Lecturers have implemented various learning methods during lectures because not all students like writing scientific articles. Moreover, most students are still confused about writing scientific articles correctly, and their motivation to read is low.

Abstract

The growing need to improve students’ performance in biology in external examinations has driven science educators on the quest for factors, both personal and environmental, that could be influenced to this effect. Considering this, the study investigated the relationship between secondary school students’ test anxiety and their academic achievement in biology. Two research questions and three null hypotheses, tested at 0.05 alpha levels, guided the study. A correlational survey research design was adopted. The population comprised the 20,703 Senior Secondary Year one (SS1) students, in the 262 government owned secondary schools, in Anambra State. Taro Yamane’s formula was employed to obtain the sample size of 392 SS1 students while proportionate stratified random sampling technique was used to randomly draw the students used in the study. For data collection, two instruments were used: The Biology Test Anxiety Scale (BTAS), which was validated by three experts and with a reliability coefficient of 0.78 established using Cronbach alpha, and the Biology Students' Score Proforma (BSSP). Data collected were analyzed using Pearson product moment coefficient (r) to answer the research questions while the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 alpha levels using simple linear regression. The findings of the study revealed that, statistically, students test anxiety negatively correlates with their academic achievement in biology, irrespective of gender. This by implication simply means that as students’ test anxiety increases, their academic achievement decreases. Based on the findings, the study recommended among others that teachers should allocate adequate time, adopt innovative strategies and organize practical classes during biology classes as these will encourage active participation, boost students’ morale and, in the long run, reduce their test anxiety in biology.

Abstract

Algebraic thinking enables learners to devise algebra generalization when configuring quadratic equations from their graphical representations. Noticeable, learners grapple with this topic and there are some silent issues in the literature that should be explored in this discourse. Consequently, this prompted the current study, aimed to explore Grade 11 learners’ algebraic thinking when formulating quadratic equations from drawn graphs. The study adopted three tenets of the Lesh’s Translational model, pictorial and symbolic representations. An exploratory case study was used with 22 purposively sampled learners to explore algebraic thinking exhibited in learners’ responses to the graphical questions and transcripts from unstructured interviews. The algebraic thinking came from the exploration documents and interviews analysed through thematic analysis. The findings revealed that 17 learners lacked basic knowledge of algebra concepts which prevented the formulation of equations from graphs. This resulted from learners exploiting improper properties of algebra which were the requirement for the formulation of equations. The implication is that teaching, and learning should focus on the establishment of skills that permit exploiting appropriate prior knowledge relevant to this topic. Last, we suggest that empirical studies be conducted to focus on improving the instruction for the crafting of equations from graphs.

Abstract

Foreign language acquisition is one of the important issues in the current era of globalization. Indonesian is not an exception because, within the last twenty years, the significance of Indonesian language has increased. This study aims to reveal the problem of the learning of Indonesian language as a foreign language. It focused on adolescent learners from the United States of America in a reputable language institution. More specifically, there are two questions in this study. First, what are the barriers of learning Indonesian that were found by the American learners? Second, what are the types of teaching materials that these learners like? This study is a case study with descriptive methods. It was conducted in a training institution focusing to train Christian preachers. Four learners from the United States of America were the informants in this study. The data were generated from the four American learners in obtained through (1) observation; (2) depth interviews with informants; and (3) relevant documents. This study concluded that (1) in general, the barriers faced by the American learners can be classified into four types: social, mental, phonological, and grammatical; and (2) the learners prefer various teaching materials but their common preference is the authentic learning materials that consider aspects of audiovisual media use, Indonesian cultural diversity, and language formality. Since the study only relied on four informants, the results cannot be generalized to all learners of Indonesian Language. However, they can provide a figure in the learning of Indonesian language involving non-native speakers, especially the Americans.

Abstract

Numerous studies have highlighted the need for competent teachers in today’s classrooms. Many suggest that to meet this demand, the preparation should be stipulated at the pre-service level so, when the graduates become in-service teachers, they are already well-prepared to meet the requirements of competent teachers. This study explores the use of pedafiction stories and reflection to familiarize EFL pre-service teachers with teacher competence. The data were obtained from observation, focus group interviews and reflection papers to be analyzed by using thematic analysis (Braun Clarke, 2022). Forty-two pre-service teachers were involved in six TEFL class sessions focusing on the topic of English Teacher Competence in the Indonesian context. They read and reflected on the pedafiction stories, shared their reflections on the stories through a pair-share activity, and wrote individual reflections. The findings reveal that pedafiction stories exploration and reflection have enabled the pre-service teachers to identify the English teacher competencies shown by the character in the story. Besides, the pre-service teachers could relate the topic of teacher competence to a broader social context. Pedafiction and reflection, to a certain extent, have also contributed to the development of the pre-service teachers’ teaching identity. The findings shed light on the potential of stories and reflective practice for English teacher preparation at the pre-service level.

Abstract

Corpus analysis plays pivotal role in investigating language use within EMI contexts. However, there is still a lack of research on identifying specialized vocabulary with its lexical density along with the multimodal analysis in the science education context. This research aims to identify frequently used specialized vocabulary, measure lexical density, and investigate multimodality in the students’ writing. Quantitative and qualitative methods using AntConc and Compleat Lexical Tutor and Kress and Leeweun multimodal analysis framework were employed. The data, totaling 12.587 words, were collected from mindmap assignments, submitted by 62 students at the International Program in Science Education, specifically in the Biotechnology subject, over a span of four consecutive years. The findings showed 20 specialized vocabularies in Biotechnology based on the frequency. The lexical density of the data ranges from 61% to 97%, or by average 78%, indicating that the majority of these words are disciplinary-related content words. This study also revealed the interconnection of the visual and verbal elements in the meaning-making of the disciplinary concepts. This study confirms that the specialized vocabulary, lexical density, and multimodality are interrelated components of communication in specialized domains, which should be considered for pedagogical purposes.
