Abstract Women’s roles in political and social world have been looked down by the society. The patriarchy system adhered by the Balinese people make women’s position subordinated to men. Even though women have big roles not just in private sector but also in public sector, Balinese’s women still think they do not have big contribution in their family. It is also happening in Gianyar, Bali. People in Gianyar Bali have a strict Balinese’s culture that make women have more role besides the other women in Indonesia. The research problem is what are women’s perception about their role in private and public sectors? The research was based on quantitative method by using questionnaire to 400 sample in Gianyar Bali. Research came out that women in Gianyar were spending their time dealing with household job and customary matters. They did not have time for themselves and consider themselves remain in the subordinated position. Women in Gianyar live under high hegemonic of their roles both in private and public spheres.

On this globalization era many local arts have faced processes of marginalization, including parwa shadow puppet as can be seen in Gianyar Regency, Bali. This article studies about the marginalization of parwa shadow puppet (WKP) in Gianyar Regency. The study based on observation of this specific WKP in the period of a decade, 2000 until the year 2010. In addition of observation, data for the study were collected through interview and desk research. The research shows that in the last ten years, the popularity of WKP has declined marked by the decrease in number of audiences and performance schedule of all WKP puppeteer including that performances for religious activity. Marginalization of WKP are caused by an internal and external factors. Internal factor consisted of decreasing society fascination watch on the WKP, declining of puppeteer creativity, weaknesses in the policy of traditional institutions, and the lack of support from the government. The external factor included the obscure future of WKP, people are more intearested with aspects of an entertainment than moral teaching of the performance, the increasing influence of global arts, and the availability of modern entertainment amusement sources. The research also shows that amidst the strong marginalization phenomena of life of the WKP in the same time there has been efforts to preserve the WKP in Gianyar.

Abstract

Abstract Since the Assisi Declarations on man and nature were initially created by leaders from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism at an interreligious meeting convened by World Wildlife Fund in Assisi, Italy in September 1986 and the first World Day of Prayer for Peace attended by representatives of many more faiths and ethnic religions in October 1986 in Assisi, a contemporary environmental movement that clearly encompasses spiritual as well as social dimensions has been growing exponentially. However, given the acceleration of global warming and environmental crises differentially affecting parts of the earth, we have now to ask, what is the application of the Assisi Declarations and peace prayers for facing the needs of today and in the future? This article thus aims to convey some ideas on the contributions of living prayer and associated creative practices in Indonesia in general, and Bali in particular, by discussing three dimensions: (a) the ways in which living prayer is embodied in customary ritual arts as well as in new forms of artistic expression; (b) its contributions to environmental, socio-cultural, and economic well-being; and (c) the means by which it fosters intercultural and interreligious dialogue and creativity. To illustrate this, I draw on examples of prayers and art from public participatory intercultural Sharing Art events held in Bali and Java as well as in other countries.

Abstract

Abstract Bali has contacted with Java in a long period of time in terms of historical and cultural aspects. Based on those historical and archeological evidences, it can be understood  that the Balinese clasical kingdoms had contacted with Java, particularly with the Middle and East Java kingdoms from the 8th Century. Those relations had been strengthened  in the 10th to 11th Century, especially in the reign of Udayana King, who married with a princesses from East Java, Gunapriya Dharmapatni. The impacts of those relations, we can see in terms of political and cultural aspects in the present day Bali. One of these impacts, we can see in the similar forms and functions between the East Java and the Balinese temples.

Abstract

Legend is a kind of traditional knowledge which consists of various explanations reflecting the ethnic world views and social practices of a community. It is also considered as a very simple knowledge product of traditional community although it sometimes has very broad meanings. Legend texts of Tirta Solas and Tampara Tatum belonging to the Balinese and the Dayakese (Dayak Ngaju people) in Central Kalimantan, which use rivers as the setting of stories, can reveal the embryonic knowledge of local cultures. Based on anthropolinguistics, this article discusses the river civilizations of the two ethnic groups which have socio-cultural similarities and differences in religious systems – as the two native ethnic community groups share the livelihood of taking advantages of a river and practice the Hinduism based – the Balinese refers to India and the Dayakese to native people beliefs; social organization, which also influences their arts closely related to their beliefs; and livelihood system in taking advantages of a river.

Abstract

Abstract The Hindu community in Bali have a tradition ceremony called pasupati pratima, sacralization of statue. Pasupati generally performed in the temple where pratima will be resided. This article examines the process and the philosophical meaning of pasupati pratima in Pura Pasek Ngukuhin, Banjar Tegeh Kori Denpasar. In this temple, the event has been a tradition but still gugon tuwon, meaning that without the efforts carried out by a tradition steeped in philosophical meaning. In the philosophy of pasupati ceremony is the process of uniting the power of Shiva (Trance Pasupati) on pratima characterized by melaspas ceremony, that is cleaning all the stains of Pratima. Ngatep, unifying symbol of soul and body in pratima is by tying a tridatu thread as the strength of Tri Murti. Chanting Mantram of Pasupati is a wish to Lord Shiva to reside on the Pratima. Chanting script of Dasa Bayu (ten forces of nature) Ing, Ang Kang, Sang, Mang, Pang, Lang, Wang, Yang, Ung means that ten natural forces entered the pratima. Pasupati also means the union of the power of God/ Spirit of the bhuwana agung with Pratima become one substance with God. When this unification happens, the status of pratima become  deities. The entire process of Pasupati, philosophically, is the changes status of an object from the profane to the sacred that is based on Satyam Siwam Sundaram (truth, purity and beauty) in order to achieve the purpose of life jagadhita (prosperous).

Abstract

Abstract The present research is focused on the harmonization between Nusantara and Bali local geniuses for character education at the primary schools in Bali. The research design was purely qualitative. The informants were recruited purposively. The data were collected through in-depth interview and analyzed descriptively and coded according to text genres. Results show that the general themes and sub-themes derived from Nusantara local geniuses are well juxtaposed with the Bali geniuses. These newly derived themes and sub-themes are implemented in the curriculum at the primary schools in Bali. Character education, which include local wisdom and genius, are more reliable and valid for children in Bali. Bali’s local wisdom and genius, which adhere in the Hindu philosophy, are potentially rich for the development of character education’s themes and sub-themes. The central themes and sub-themes fleshed out from the Hindu philosophy are coherently tied into a system of meaningful moral entity. Children may learn moral characters contextually and meaningfully through the national language of Indonesia at schools. However, caution should be taken as the themes and sub-themes are critically beyondthe first and second graders’ cognitive and moral development stages.

Abstract

Abstract: Balinese Frame of Reference. Wassmann and Dasen (1998) did a study on the acquisition of Balinese frames of reference. They pointed out that, in addition to the dominant use of absolute system, the use of relative system was also observed. This article aims at verifying Wassmann and Dasen’ study. Employing monolingual Balinese speakers and using linguistic and non-linguistic tasks, Aryawibawa (2010, 2012, 2015) showed that Balinese subjects used an absolute system dominantly in responding the two tasks, e.g. The man is north/south/east/west of the car. Unlike Wassmann and Dasen’s results, no relative system was used by the subjects in solving the tasks. Instead of the relative system, an intrinsic system was also observed in this study, even though it was unfrequent. The article concludes that the absolute system was dominantly employed by Balinese speakers in describing spatial relations in Balinese. The use of the system seems to affect their cognitive functions.
