Abstract

Local language, which is maintained and respected by its speakers, is protected by the government as local language is a part of Indonesian culture stated in the national constitutions of UUD 1945, the TAP MPR No. II/MPR/1988, the National Language Politic and Policy of National Language, and constitution No. 24 dated in 2009 about languages. The Implementation of those regulations is written on Formal Education Curriculum that is in local content curriculum. One of the local content curriculum aspects is the lesson plan which consists of material component: texts or handouts, especially for primary school students. The opportunity for strengthening and developing the local language on Curriculum 2013 is integrated within the material of art and culture. Referring to the percentage of hours for learning local language in Art-Culture, it lack of time for local language materials. Consequently, the local language materials should be developed and strengthened, so the coming up generation of local language speakers will have optimal vocabulary for maintaining and developing mother tongue. This problem is discussed by applying Systemic-Functional Linguistics.

Abstract

Abstract Some of legends in Dayak Ngaju (DN) community use rivers as the settings. By using semiotic theory, meanings and values within the texts of DN legend (LDN) can be drawn in the perception of culture and belief of DN community. The sign system (expression and content) of semiotics can explain the connotative meanings in LDN texts; they are the connotative meanings of the power of human beings, animals, and plants in/ near rivers; the connotative meanings of the prosperous from rivers; the connotative meanings of identity made by the river itself; and the connotative meaning of social and religious made by the community. Moreover, those meanings can describe the values occur in DN community; those are history, social, and religious values.

Abstract

Abstract From the perspective of social semiotics, language has two dimensions: expression and content. The expression will not have a content (meaning) when it is not in used (Halliday dan Hasan, 1985: 17). Language function which is expressed in the legends belonged to the Dayak Ngaju community (LDN) in Central Kalimantan is suitable to the theory of language function proposed by Halliday and Hasan (1985: 17) rather than other theories. The language function within LDN consists of informative function, interactive, and imaginative.

Legend is a kind of traditional knowledge which consists of various explanations reflecting the ethnic world views and social practices of a community. It is also considered as a very simple knowledge product of traditional community although it sometimes has very broad meanings. Legend texts of Tirta Solas and Tampara Tatum belonging to the Balinese and the Dayakese (Dayak Ngaju people) in Central Kalimantan, which use rivers as the setting of stories, can reveal the embryonic knowledge of local cultures. Based on anthropolinguistics, this article discusses the river civilizations of the two ethnic groups which have socio-cultural similarities and differences in religious systems – as the two native ethnic community groups share the livelihood of taking advantages of a river and practice the Hinduism based – the Balinese refers to India and the Dayakese to native people beliefs; social organization, which also influences their arts closely related to their beliefs; and livelihood system in taking advantages of a river.

Abstract

This study investigates the teaching process using the EGRA (Experience, Generalization, Reinforcement, Application) method for writing a recount text in the eighth grade at SMPN7 Palangka Raya. It specifically focuses on how the method is utilized in lessons, its presence in teaching plans, and the responses it receives from teachers and students. The EGRA method is selected due to its focus on experiential learning, thereby providing students with opportunities for creativity in their writing and facilitating discussions about their work. Each EGRA stage has its specific objectives, aiding students in understanding, formulating, revising, and applying ideas. Data, collected through observations, interviews, and document review, reveal how the EGRA method affects student participation and assists in effective material delivery, creating an engaging classroom environment. The method encourages various insightful activities and challenges students, thereby stimulating their knowledge and creativity. The research concludes the influential role of the EGRA method in activating student learning and transforming the teacher's role into a facilitator, breaking away from monotonous classroom conditions.

Abstract

This article investigates the challenges faced in teaching English for Business (EFB) to students taking a vocational education program at LPP Quantum, one of the vocational education institutions in Sampit City. This study uses a qualitative approach with data collection techniques in the form of in-depth interviews, direct classroom observations, and analysis of learning documents to obtain a comprehensive picture of the problems that arise in the teaching process. The results of the study reveal a number of significant obstacles, such as limited English vocabulary relevant to the business world, low motivation to learn among students, lack of initial understanding of the business context, and limited learning support facilities available. These factors collectively affect the effectiveness and success of teaching Business English in the context of vocational education. Therefore, this study recommends the need for the implementation of a more adaptive, contextual, and responsive pedagogical approach to students' needs, as well as the importance of institutional support in creating a conducive and industrially relevant learning environment.

Abstract

Improving the quality of human resources in rural areas is a significant challenge in achieving equal education in Indonesia, particularly in areas such as Tumbang Nusa Village, Jabiren Raya District, Pulang Pisau Regency, Central Kalimantan. Low awareness of the importance of education and limited access to English language learning are factors that hinder the development of the younger generation's potential. This community service activity aims to increase the awareness and basic English language skills through a participatory and contextual approach based on the school community. The implementation method includes interactive training, song-based and visual learning, and joint reflection, face-to-face at partner schools. The results of the activity demonstrated high enthusiasm among participants, active engagement in the learning process, and increased motivation to learn English. This activity also strengthened collaboration between the community service team, the village, and the school as local partners. This activity suggests that the contextual and communicative approach is effective in developing learning awareness and language skills among students living in rural areas.
