Abstract

AbstractTaking a mutualistic perspective, this article discussesthe role of tourism as a vehicle for the preservation of thesubak, and, conversely, the cultural aspects of the subakas a capital base for tourism. Tourism is a cornerstonein the development of Bali, and, due to several positivecharacteristics, such as its resilience in the face of crises, thebenefits from tourism reach all levels of society. For Bali, the data indicate that 34% of the labor force is employedin this sector, and approximately 52% of Balinese people’sincome has connection to tourism. Its role in generatingthe GDP and PAD (Pendapatan Asli Daerah, or localrevenue) is also very large, which allows the regionaland city governments to implement various developmentinitiatives. The basic capital of Bali’s tourism developmentis culture, especially culture based on agriculture. Because‘rice culture’ is so central to many aspects of Balineseculture, then indeed the basic capital of Balinese tourism isrice culture or subak culture. This article argues that trulytourism has great potential as a vehicle for the preservationof the subak, because tourism could become the market thatsupports agricultural products. There is also the potentialfor developing various types of agriculture-based tourism, such as ecotourism and agro-tourism. Thus, the approachto considering the relationship between agriculture (subak)and tourism should be mutualistic, not dichotomous.

Abstract

AbstractGlobalism has variously impacted on the social, cultural, economic, legaland political life of the Balinese, which in turn has changed the structure ofBalinese society. Ultimately, this could also create conflicts or other socialproblems. Indeed, there are many regulations to anticipate and to dealwith such issues, but these have not been satisfactory due to weaknessesin implementation. This can be seen in the way issues on globalism affectideas of multi-versalism, which could in turn foster particular changestowards sustainable development in Balinese society. The majority of people who reside in the Bali Island are Balinese, whoare adherents of Hinduism. The Balinese have attempted to solve theproblems caused by globalization not only in the context of their dailylife, but also in the context of religion. It is important to note here thatthe religious issues are closely linked with the local issues, especiallythose dealing with their longstanding cultural. This essay will addressseveral issues: firstly, how globalism affects social, cultural, economic, and political aspects of Balinese life; secondly, how the Balinese anticipateor solve contemporary problems; and finally how the global and nationalissues have been tackled by the Balinese society through local wisdom. An analysis of these important issues is expected to offer a betterunderstanding of globalism in the context of Balinese local wisdom andthe ideas of multi-versalism.

Abstract

The river has a substantial contribution in our life. But in reality the quality of rivers in Indonesia is in a heavily polluted condition. Various river structuring efforts have been carried out such as maintaining cleanliness, managing the smooth running of water, and educating people not to throw garbage into the river. This article aims to identify potential and determine the design in developing the Badung River basin to support the development of cultural tourism in Denpasar City. The technique of collecting data uses non-participant observation, document study, and in-depth interviews. This article concludes that Sungai Badung has a variety of tourism potential that can be developed as a new tourist attraction. The concept of development by designing eco-culinary tourism parks combines the concepts of ‘eco-tourism’ and ‘culinary tourism’ in an effort to create sustainable tourism without damaging the river ecosystem.

Abstract

Abstract Since the Assisi Declarations on man and nature were initially created by leaders from Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam and Judaism at an interreligious meeting convened by World Wildlife Fund in Assisi, Italy in September 1986 and the first World Day of Prayer for Peace attended by representatives of many more faiths and ethnic religions in October 1986 in Assisi, a contemporary environmental movement that clearly encompasses spiritual as well as social dimensions has been growing exponentially. However, given the acceleration of global warming and environmental crises differentially affecting parts of the earth, we have now to ask, what is the application of the Assisi Declarations and peace prayers for facing the needs of today and in the future? This article thus aims to convey some ideas on the contributions of living prayer and associated creative practices in Indonesia in general, and Bali in particular, by discussing three dimensions: (a) the ways in which living prayer is embodied in customary ritual arts as well as in new forms of artistic expression; (b) its contributions to environmental, socio-cultural, and economic well-being; and (c) the means by which it fosters intercultural and interreligious dialogue and creativity. To illustrate this, I draw on examples of prayers and art from public participatory intercultural Sharing Art events held in Bali and Java as well as in other countries.

Abstract

The making of penjor for the Hindu holy day of Galungan shows the existence of innovation and excessive creativities. This research was aimed at investigating the phenomenon of penjor Galungan style in the contemporary Bali which viewed from the community involvement, the use of material, and the emergence of spiritual meaning. This study used descriptive qualitative research method. The data collection was carried out through observation and literature review. The analysis shows that the Hindu community in Bali currently prefers buying the elements of penjor for rather than make by themselves; the making of penjor Galungan uses contemporary available material; and the structural spiritual meaning of penjor Galungan is being embellished by the domination of contemporary spiritual meanings.

Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this study is to discuss the relations of power in the history of the contemporary Hindu religion in Bali.  The concept of power relations refers to the concept of Power and Discourse of Michel Foucault, while the term “invented religion” is a development of Invented Tradition by Eric Hobsbawm. “Invented religion” in this study is defined as the practice of Hindu religion, which was invented, constructed, and officially manifested; and the religious practice which emerged in a relatively short time; and in a few years  it has been regarded as an established religion. Based on the concept of Power and Discourse of Foucault, I argue that there are relations of power that shape and sustain the practice of “invented religion.”  I will try to find the power relations in a God worshipping discourse in Samuantiga and Jagatnatha temples. There are two research questions that I raise for the argument, namely how and why these two discourses emerge and thrive in contemporary’s practice of Hinduism?  The answer to both questions will be sought at the present Balinese-Hindu intellectual thought. Then, it is assessed using the Genealogy Method of  Foucault. My conclusion is that the presence of the two discourses is only to harmonize Hinduism with  Islam as the majority religion in Indonesia.
